Dear Spiral knights,

I have not been with you all very long, but I have seen the trials and tribulations you have all had to go through.

Unfortunately, for OOO on this occasion, I cannot see myself continuing with the journey beside you all through to the core.

This is perhaps a boohoogohome thread so TL:DR if you know what's coming.

"What prompted this?" I hear you cry..

For one: "To celebrate the Year of the Dragon, the Haven Treasury has created a spectacular array of Dragon Wing accessories that are being given away FREE with a $9.95 energy purchase! "

After being told that no one knows how they will be distributed. I for one hoped for something tied to the missions.. perhaps a way to introduce them with a need to log on perhaps once a week to do a selection of missions and collect specific items over a 30 day period that would eventually be crafted (for free) into one of the dragon wings available. However, this nor anything like it transpired.

and two : "Lastly, it's worth noting that the Supply Depot is built to exist in a world where crafting and unbinding is an important part of Spiral Knights."

I do not even need to comment on how this affects the game, I'm sure you will all know it and feel it accordingly.

Since accessory-gate 2011 I have become increasing disparaged with how I feel about SK. Once for me it was a wonderland, coming from an online game that showed no mercy for it's patrons or their views. Whilst I do feel that some views are listened to by the SK team I do not see any forthcoming generosity nor even fairness being awarded to the hard working players and payers that are still here today.

I will check in from time to time, obv because I like playing games and SK has a lot of promise.. but that's all it is now.. all promises, and seemingly all the good things that are promised come at a steep price.

For my time and money I have found a better alternative, I shall not name names.

I hope you all enjoy your time in Haven and the clockworks and that many of you go on to be prosperous and fortuitous knights.

I will use the last of my CE probably to purchase some of the dragon wings and hold for safe keeping for the future ahead when I shall return, even if it is just to see another pair of prismatic wing being flaunted on the featured auctions.

OOO you have made a wonderful game, fun to play, easy to pick up, simple yet dramatic but for all the money that is being piled into it now, personally I see no return to the players. In fact I see more things being taken from them than given. This I just cannot abide to support that any longer.

To everyone, and especially to the people that have helped me out alot along the way (Giannii, Pawn, Rommil, and Aecarus predominantly) I thank you and hope that you continue to enjoy your time here.

Arrivederci good sirs *salute* and may you keep kicking Vana's butt until he has.. o wait you've done that a million times already.

wow, people are really affected by tangential material

It seems that your dissatisfaction has been building for some time, but that most of it stems from accessories. As someone who completely ignores accessories and featured auctions, I am always amazed by how strongly people feel about these things. In some cases, it seems that people play SK just to acquire fancy stuff, and don't even enjoy the actual act of playing the game. If that's the case for you, then yes, you should definitely quit. Happy travels.

I like the fancy stuff, it

I like the fancy stuff, it makes a good crown sink since I've got pretty much all I'll ever need being a gunslinger. Plus, it makes me feel prettiful.
'Course I don't mind blasting a few mobs every now and again.

@bopp it's not the

@bopp it's not the accessories themselves bopp.. it's the way they were handled.. and the way things continue to be handled and presented that I have dissatisfaction with. I could go on about all else - crafting costs, unbinding fees, shadow lairs but I don't feel the need to. Accessories have become the main focus of the game in lieu of new content (for people who have played through all of the clockworks and tbh that does not take very long) and that in itself is another addition to the list.

Well Jygantic-Forum,

Let me get this straight: You are quitting because of the way dragon wings are being distributed, but your going to buy a pair "just in case" ?!?!?
Do you even know how hypocritical that is ? Did you even go back and read the post you typed before you posted it? Do you see the irony ?

What about the free accessories SK give away from time to time (pumpkin bandolier, and the free proto crest for example)?

What about the fact that this game is free to play? Convert crowns into crystal and the splendor's of this "wonderland" are yours.

.....

i wish the forums were more interesting and less whiny and hateful. - Tersakoff

I agree. I can barley read these forums any longer.

.....

*edit - I apologize for yelling a bit up there. I'm just so very, very worn out of people with asinine logic on SK forums.

Good luck to you Jygantic.

So.. you're going to be quitting because accessories have apparently become the game's focus, even though we're getting missions?

What do accessories matter to you anyways, they don't affect gameplay at all.

hm...

Let me tell you a story about a knight named bob. He once did Vana and was killed by mace to the face. Later he bought the acessory side blade and equipped it. Later he did vana again, and died with mace to the face.

Moral: acessories dont mean squat.

I personally grew tired of the monotony as a swordie. Instead im now trying as a bomber. Its refreshing from a swordie and a new challenge.

Moral: Try new things new levels. It breaks monotony well.

Daarke here, and thats the moral for today.

jyg, hope you have in whatever endeavors you aspire, meanwhile ill have my fun as i always enjoyed in this game.

Maybe he didn't explain it

Maybe he didn't explain it correctly but most should know the accessories update and shadow lairs update were too "greedy" in nature. And hit very hard the "early adopters" too. Well I'm not sure early adopters is the right term, but those that spent the most on the feature usually were hit the hardest, when those "supporters" should have gotten something back instead don't you think?. There were a huge wave of rage quitters around that time, probably due to the updates.

In the case of shadow lairs I'm talking about the keys getting lowered in price later on while people still hadn't sold theirs, because the early adopters that rushed to craft the new gear to resell, well they made a killing :P Myself I bought only 4 keys and its not until last week that I managed to sell the last one (without losing CE on them). Those that play the actual game and not "spiral market" maybe don't know/don't care, but there was a constant need to get rid of the hot potatoes among traders (ie. people were always bugging me to buy their shadow keys but I knew better most of the time, the three or so keys I took for a friend were hell to sell and I had them mentally marked as losses as soon as I took them).

On the other hand, many of these people were just playing spiral market instead of buying because they actually wanted the stuff, so too bad for them one could say. And, after all, its a game, and its better to learn with small investments what can happen to you in the real world with your life savings should you choose wrong :P (I learned a lot about scams from Diablo II for instance, being the dumb kid that kept falling on them, good knowledge to have)

So, again, I doubt hes complaining about the accessories themselves (I do complain some are ugly :P, but overall they are fine), but I bet he's complaining about the business model around them. The one where you spent hundreds of dollars and didn't get the damned wings you wanted so much, and was expected (at release) that you'd just keep pumping dollars until you got them, this obviously enrages those that spent a bunch of money to get their fairy costume complete :P

This is fixed now with the featured auctions luckily, at the cost of now hurting those that bought the rare stuff to resale (those that play spiral market) because their stuff was not as "exclusive" to warrant the price they paid for, now the stuff can pop up on the auctions at any point. While that hurt I think we can agree it did fix the problem the accessories release created, was there a better way to fix it? maybe, can't tell for sure, but it's done already anyway.

The "new" old business model, where ooo releases promo content for a price feels much much better, you know the price and what you get for it, er, mostly. In the case of the random prizes from buying packages while it is still a lottery, but you are getting the ce you would have got for buying the package, so its not a total loss. The wings or whatever you get is more like a discount, a bonus, or something.

Now, why all this makes him leave now? no idea, that was a bit delayed, but it's probably more about the new thing that interests him now than the new update.

About the game being F2P it's true there's that option and it's completely valid way to play, but those that bought CE and buy CE are paid customers, they probably expect a better service, they usually get it (to begin with the mist mechanics), but you can lose them if you don't meet their expectations too. OOO already knows all that (they have to keep the F2P players happy too, its part of their business to have them around for instance) so I'm just trying to let you know how this works and why could he be quitting because apparently you didn't get it, or are trolling, whatever.

I'm not too hopeful about the missions, but as long as they have about 30 mins of well made "new" content... To me, basically, it just needs 4 missions in a new tileset, something that resembles a new boss stratum, the boss is not necessary, they can make a big arena-type gauntlet at the end for all I care. And that will be a great update they can build on top later. I still think they should think of releasing boss runs, but they should know better, one thing is what you think and what you say you want, and another what you actually want, and they have to hit the latter.

Well, bye and have fun.

Well Said Giannii

Nicely said.

While its not for any of us to speculate what his intentions and reasoning is beyond what he has expressed, i think its fair to surmise that he does not agree with the direction the game is going. We are all happy that the game is moving (glacially) forward, but for many it seems it is doing so by going left when it should go right, and going down when it should go up.

OOO has done soooo many things that have enraged its player base, seemingly at every turn. Some of those were to fix mistakes they should have had the forsight to see, but didn't. What can you do?

But i think the thing that gets many players the most, is the way they randomly change the rules without a moment's notice. One can work very hard to put them self into an advantageous situation, and then have that jack-knifed with no forewarning or restitution. Be this right or wrong. Its almost like trying to play an important competitive game for high stakes (all word usage in proper context of playing a silly game. Yes, its all trivial in the end, but many people spend many hours into it, so we all have a vested interest that goes beyond the mere cute sprites and coding of fictitious variables) only you are playing vs a small child who makes up and changes the rules as you go; and worse yet, you are helpless to do anythign about it and simply must abide and try and "win" within the new frame of rules and hope they are not shifted or skewed again as soon as you recover and start to build new advantages.

I realize not everyone plays the game on this level, that for many, its more than enough to log on, play thru your mist, buy some ce, craft a weapon, maybe plop down 10 bucks for random wings, play some more and then do it again tomorrow. Not everyone is trying to build up an "empire," not everyone is obsessed to DOMINATE the game as best they can. But for some of us, thats just a mindset and personality trait that comes through in all aspects of life. Chess, Competitive athletics, work, spiral knights, whatever it is that you apply your limited time and energy into, you want to do it well, to the best of your ability, and innately driven to try and do it better than others. For people like that, playing a game where the rules are reconfigured on a moment's notice, without notice, it can be very, very, very frustrating.

Also, i think he mentions accessories as a left when he wanted a right, or down when he wanted an up. Its part of the inevitable progress forward of the game, and has sadly shifted to the predominant force of the game, as content is "used up" so there's not much to do than delve into the only new and expanding portion of the game (endless accessories). And then, and then, we are mislead and hoodwinked at every turn.

1. these are all available in lockboxes.
--but they weren't. Most of the most rare and desirable accessories were not avaiable until featured auctions. never mind the 1000s of dollars that were spent trying to get them.
--shadow keys were secretly being seeded into the auction house by OOO with no acknowledgment from them they were doing this. (i can't prove either of these. but i am 100% certain both are true. it is what it is).

2. Featured Auctions themselves were a bit misleading. Never did we know that these weren't going to be rare, but rather flooded into the market. This could have been forseeable. but no one really foresaw it. so be it.

3. Finally, take this dragon wing thing for example. OOO gladly accepted over 100m crowns for wings of all sorts. Then, after they collected all those bounties, they create new wings that move and stretch and give them away for 10 bucks. Kind of a slap in the face. One that didn't catch many people full-on, but enough. I am fine with it, and i'm over it. I still like the old school wings more. But still, it is an odd decision.

I don't think we can blame triple O for focusing on money making endeavors. I am glad they do. With rose regalia, sonic gear, dragon wings, explorer packs, all of it. I want them to make money. I want the game to thrive. I want them to be able to pay their bills, hire more staff, keep the lights on, drive fancy cars and eat steak dinners. They deserve to profit greatly off of this game. We use the anology of "u hit the lottery" if you get shadow wings, or if you were to craft a vh asi + Vh ctr sword. So its fair that the dev's hit the lottery in creating the entire game.

There are just many of us, granted we are a vocal, entitled, minority most likely, who feel like we should have the right to "work and live" within a firm, set, static world of rules. That careful planning, manipulating, spending, organizing, and analyizng of the environment should be rewarded effort. Not render null and void, with assets becoming liabilities, and perfect plans turned nightmares with the wave of a magic wand. A magic wand held by a fat, chubby, jelly covered child's hand making up the rules as he goes.

tl;dr

it sucks that the game can completely change without warning, and the collateral damage is YOU. and no one cares but YOU. (and a couple of your friends maybe). But i'm still around, and plodding along.

Hope to see you around Jygantic :)
maybe some day play experience and content contributions will be the main driving force of the game. If not, hope whatever game you switch to is a ton of fun and can keep your interest and allow you to flourish via hardwork and craftiness. At least long enough to SK to reload and offer some more fun.
