Just wondering if it is possible to somehow set up a USB gaming controller (similar to the Play Station style ones) or not.
Anyone know how? Or if it is possible?
Thanks

yea, I have one and did it for a little while. I went back to WASD/mouse though.
In my experience, it's sort of a pain in the butt. I have to manually set up my controller for all the buttons and movement. It'd be okay if there was some sort of quick-change memorized control scheme, but if you're planning on just using the controller, it shouldn't be a problem. You can also set up as much or as little on the controller as you want. For example, I was doing a L1 and L2 for block and mouse for attack and facing, and L analog stick for movement. I also did a full setup on the controller...I dunno. Mouse has better aiming, and I didn't like the throw length on the controller analog sticks. Not comfortable to use, I guess. Also, I have both hands totally off the keyboard, so chatting sort of...makes me have to reset my gaming stance...I guess. I guess a more expensive controller with adjustable analog sticks + dragon naturally speaking would be nice. :D
BTW, I got a controller that's a simple PS2-style with turbo buttons and a mem function I have no clue how to use. It's branded SteelSeries, but I can't even find it online. Eh...it was 20 bucks. If I'm going to spring for a game controller, it'll be a Nostromo from Razer, or something similar.
I believe with a WIRED PS3 or Xbox 360 controller, you can simply plug it in, set the controls, and play...
but if you have a wireless, it's a bit more difficult.
I have a wireless PS3 controller and I had to download the Motioninjoy program to play.
And even then, I couldn't play wirelessly, I had to use my charger to connect.
It's very possible. Like Tennis said, a wired X360 controller is plug and play, no need to install anything. Other USB game controllers designed for PC should work, as well. Controllers going through PPJoy can work, too. I've been playing SK with a Wiimote nunchuk through PPJoy, and a Razer Naga mouse for the longest time. I practically don't need to touch my keyboard unless I'm typing. xD
I know of two working methods for using a PS3 controller on PC, and I dislike them both. Both of them (well, not sure on motioninjoy. Been a while since I used it) require overwriting the bluetooth drivers for its own use, and I don't like how motioninjoy has to pull its drivers from the net when you want to use it.
Chuck Norris tried a cheap USB gamepad similiar to Ps2. It worked, but Chuck Norris doesn't recommond using it when you are a gunner. Its nice if you are a swordsman or bomber. Although Chuck Norris liked it, he doesn't use it anymore, he uses his fists again.
I did it. Logitech Playstation-type no joystick.
Just hook up the controller to the computer, activate Spiral knights, then configure the controls as per normal. Easy.
I wouldn't use it though, I'm more used to the WASD-and-mouse type.
Psyhcodestroyer disagrees. No resemblance is there. At all whatsoever.
Not-Psychodestroyer should change his opinion.
The wired 360 or wireless "for windows" 360 controllers (the "for windows" version comes with a USB wireless receiver thing, which I think you can also buy separately) work out of the box on windows, and the dualshock 3 works out of the box on macs.
Personally I use a wireless 360 controller on my PC for SK. I have movement mapped to the left stick, shield to the left button and auto-aim to the left trigger, then ABXY for vial slots, and everything else of note on my mouse (aiming, weapon slots, attacking).
I also tried using full controller, with aim on the right stick, attack on right button, and weapon slots on the d-pad but I found that aiming in particular was a bit awkward and imprecise.
I set plug in the controller and set it to default. on default the left stick moves me, facing that direction. I then map the left shoulder for auto target trigger, the right for shield, (fondly since in a hardcore Loz player), Then i map Y, X, and A for weapon 1, 2 ,3, and right trigger for weapon 4. (i occasionally have 4 weapon slots when i have the money). I map action as B, and vial slots as the D-pad. then the right stick i set up as face north, south, west, east, respectively so i can do the happy emote (spin like a happy fool) thing. =3 The results? Fast switching on weapons in the heat of battle, and the sword skills and agility of the legendary Link. =P
P.S. I have cheap xbox controller for 20 bucks. it works sooo much better the wasd in my opinion. reaction time is quicker too.
i use the analog stick as my thumb gets numb on the direction buttons.
the problem? you will notice that when you have to drive the analog stick to an opposite direction, it would cause you to often react very late...
for example, on fsc, dodging shadowfire becomes more of a haphazard...
But then again, its a matter of getting used to it
I use a PS2 usb controller as well (hoping that the game has a vibrate support xD). you will have just enough buttons to go normally...
I've used a Logitech F310 for spiral knights since I first started playing. People may say it hinders you but I've done extremely well with it. It makes recon and guardian in LD a little more responsive, and sword loadouts are that much easier to master.
here is my layout
Thanks for all the posts, very helpful!
Okay, so I recently downloaded Spiral Knights after playing at my friends' house. I played with his XBOX 360 WIRED USB controller with zero problems.. Fast forward to now.. I have Spiral Knights downloaded, an account made, and all the drivers for my WIRED XBOX 360 Controller are up to date. I even made sure it wasn't the controller by testing it on another game through Steam. So, I have the controller plugged in, have changed the controls to gamepad, and Spiral Knights is ready to be clicked. I click it and the game comes up.. I sign in, pick my character, and then it launches me to the game.. My character stands there motionless while I fiddle with my WIRED XBOX 360 controller to see whats wrong.. Cable was secure and everything else was in order.. So, it must be a problem with Spiral Knights..
I even uninstalled SK twice and reinstalled only to be greeted with the same problem.... Any help?
Did you change the controls in the game? If they weren't set, SK wouldn't do anything with the input from the controller because it's not instructed to do anything with the input.
To set your controls, press Escape and then go to the Controls tab. From there, you can choose to either use the default gamepad controls by pressing the big button that says "Gamepad" or make a custom control scheme by pressing that other big button which says "Custom".
Playing the game with a PS4 controller worked with no problems. I had to manually set up every action but once I found something I could intuitively "get" I was fine. The only tricky part might be setting up your movement sticks. I know I still haven't taken full advantage of the modifier key.

Thanks for dumbing it down. Post of the day award goes to you.
@Herbasaurus
What OS are you running? If it is Mac OS I might be able to help out with anything specific in that field. Either way, make sure to plug in the controller before starting up Spiral Knights on Steam. Doing it after Spiral Knights launches will not register the controller and won't let you use it. You said you changed the controls, but didn't mention if you attempted in-game or inside the actual files (need clarification).
@Rothni-Halias
I've had no trouble mapping the movement sticks on the PS4 controller. I actually managed to set up two different ways to move:
http://i316.photobucket.com/albums/mm349/borntobuild6/ScreenShot2014-04-...
The left stick would act as my movement and facing while the right stick (when using a modifier button) would act as facing and the left stick as movement alone. While the current layout in the image is with my old Xbox 360 wired controller, it is the same concept with the PS4 controller. Be sure to follow the exact setup if you wish to have both possible movements. Otherwise leave all movement under one stick and facing on the other, or all on one stick.
My issue with the PS4 controller is the two triggers acting as digital buttons rather than rz and z analog triggers. The new triggers act as digital buttons and provide 4 new buttons to the system: 2 buttons when pressed down (rz+ and z+) and 2 buttons when released (rz- and z-). It was for budget and responsiveness purposes but would have preferred analog had I known they were resorting to digital for the triggers. Not a total lost, but something to keep in mind while remapping buttons.
I'd like it if someone who has experience with the modifier key in Spiral Knights could possibly show a way to keep the key/button toggled instead of having to hold it down while in use. My PS4 controller's digital triggers provided a somewhat okay solution, but is a hassle to switch back after. I also thought of trying to use ControllerMate on Mac OS but had no luck setting it up.
For usage of Dualshock 4 (PS4 controller), see this wonderful little tool. I use it myself and it works like a charm.
As for your movement method, have you checked out the strafe key? By holding it, you lock your characters direction. I'm not sure if it would help you with what you're trying to accomplish but if it does, I think it could simplify things a bit.

Sadly, I don't think that's possible without external scripts or such, which is against the terms of service.
I use an SNES USB controller I used to play Mario Rom Hacks with xD
But yeah, I still use an SNES controller in LD. Pretty fun, although it's a pain when going swords.
@Krakob
While what you linked is a helpful tool, it can only be used for Windows and Linux OS. I use the Mac OS. I don't have a problem mapping out simple functions for the controller overall. Heck, majority of my games recognize the controller easily and allow inputs with no problem. It is still cool seeing other software options.
I used to use the strafe key when I used my Xbox 360 controller. It lasted for a long time while being a gunner, but the new combination I found for movement with the Dualshock 4 became superior. There are usually two control methods of moving and facing in the game; move with WASD while facing with your mouse, or move and face with mouse. I was able to accomplish both movements by setting the sticks to curtain bindings in-game that they allow in Key 1, Key 2 and Gamepad.
I checked the TOS and read carefully. Sucks, but I may ask the staff for their input out of curiosity.
@Trinity-Limit
I've been thinking about trying to use my SNES controller on here, but I'd have to map a lot for Clockwork runs. I was curious about trying a joystick or racing wheel setup for shits and giggles.
I know that it's possible since a lot of people do use this set up, but since I don't have one, I can't tell you how.
You may want to move this to Technical Issues, though. I know that forum looks pretty dead, but there's a couple of awesome and dedicated people who frequent it, and they're a lot more tech-savvy than the average GDer.
