"Hail Driver does 31 clips per minute" according to the wiki without ASI
I am hitting 41 clips per minute with a Hail at maximum ASI. So maybe that can help with comparing a no ASI to a maximum ASI buff.
With maximum ASI, it is roughly 25% faster for combos / minute according to my data
Well a Nova Driver deals 273 damage on something weak to elemental with Maximum! damage bonus at depth 28
Without a damage bonus, it deals 205 according to the wiki on the same depth against the same elemental weak monster.
doing basic math:
__________________________________________________________________________________
Max damage and no ASI:
273 x 2 = 546 damage per Nova Combo, 31 combos makes 16,926 damage in one minute of spam.
___________________________________________________________________________________
Max ASI and no damage:
205 x 2 = 410 damage per Nova Combo, 41 combos makes 16,810 damage in one minute of spam.
Conclusion? Not a big difference in DPS according to my basic math which is understandable by everyone.
Now... the difference between ASI and damage bonus? We gain survivability from ASI as well. Easier shielding.
So does this conclude that ASI might be a better stat for a gunner? Then again, how we gear means that the best possible way to optimally take advantage of bonuses is two gun damage trinkets and two ASI med pieces of armor. That makes very high / very high, our best way to optimize our guns due to gear. The next buff will either come from ASI UVs or Swiftstrike Buckler, which now definately way heavier than a damage bonus vs. x family medium, because it not only just affects a single family but also, according to my data, damage bonus is not as useful as ASI.
Now I do realize that we do shoot-pause, which might be the one thing that totally messes this up. It is so hard observing speed differences while using maximum ASI to no ASI while using shoot-pause.
Everything above in bold hints that I am not saying this is absolutely true, this is just based on my basic math and test. The wiki can also be wrong! which it has before, and you cannot jump to accepting everything the wiki says as well.
When usin' guns I've always went for ASi stuff myself, getting low/med bonuses on the gun and unquestionably using a Swifty, keepin' me at VH typically as a minimum which works nicely, keeps a good flow speed when runnin'. But I may be a bit bias sayin' this since I have family sets so I can usually maintain VH damage bonuses and good defences as well, just lettin' my swifty give me the ASi benefit and gun UVs. But on my noob w/o family bonuses I have gunslinger suit+cyclops hat with a swifty and ASi:UVs and he works out pretty nicely just keepin' movin'; shoot fast, move fast, no slows or delays. Gunners were never really supposed to hit *that* hard anyways, that's a swordys job. Gunners seem far more designed to shoot fast and constantly, and hit hard when they stop to charge.
Imo, at least.
tl;dr? Basically, I completely agree.
