Aho-Ka

Every time I attempt to open Spiral knights, steam closes with the message "Steam has closed unexpectedly" I've tried reinstalling Spiral Knights but it did not work. Any help?

Clarification

I spose a bit more information might be helpful:

Steam patched Tuesday afternoon for me. Before that, everything worked fine. The next time I loaded up Steam and tried to play Spiral Knights, one of two things would happen:

1: Steam crashes immediately after Spiral Knights has checked for patches. The intro screen of the game never comes up.

2: The game starts long enough to enter full screen (in my case, since I play it that way), and occasionally long enough for the cursor to briefly change to the one used in Spiral Knights, but stops there; the intro screen still never comes up. In the background, Steam has crashed.

The second instance occurs about twice as frequently as the first. I've reinstalled both Spiral Knights and Steam, with identical results. Nothing about my computer has changed since it was able to work, other than whatever update Steam did. Perhaps this is the cause?

Just Macs?

I have been getting this since the patch on Tuesday evening as well and I have only managed to successfully login to Spiral Knights once since the Steam update. I took out a Steam Support ticket for help but so far after over 16 hours, I have not received a response. Are you guys also using a Mac? This may be an issue isolated only to Mac users if so.

Update

If you close Steam and open Spiral Knights through "Play Now" on the Spiral Knights homepage, this seems to work for some reason but it doesn't always negate the issue.

I'm having the exact problem

I'm having the exact problem and have contacted SK support about it, no reply yet. I also posted a topic on the Steam forum but no one seems to have an answer. I'm also running a Mac so it does seem to be another Mac-only issue. Obviously something in the Steam update is preventing the client to cooperate with Spiral Knights.

Me too

I am also unable to open spiral knights on steam without it causing steam to close (I also use a mac if that matters). I did try opening other steam games and the problem only seems to be with SK.

Very frustrating because I know my mist is at 100 by now, just sitting there taunting me.

I've sent a message to Steam

I've sent a message to Steam support too about it. Hopefully they decide to update Steam again today.

Yup, mac.

I'm on a Mac as well, and from the text on the error message, so is the original poster.

Logging into Spiral

Warlordx: If you close Steam and open Spiral Knights from here: http://www.spiralknights.com/play.xhtml you should be able to login, it may not work the first time but I have tried it about five times and it's worked 3/5. What it does is opens them both at the same time I think, either way I have just logged in and done a run using this method.

Steam actually just crashed

Steam actually just crashed the same way when opening TF2. It may not just be SK

@Sirlordted

Thanks, that worked, and I got a UV on the skelly shield I crafted to use up some of my mist :)

Guys, just an FYI, it appears

Guys, just an FYI, it appears to be a general Steam issue with the Mac. There was a Steam client update a couple of days ago, and it seems that many Mac users can't launch games without Steam crashing.

Steam Forum Thread on the issue

Here's to hoping that they'll fix it for you guys soon. Seems major, so hopefully it'll get taken care of sooner rather than later. In the meantime, you might have to use a PC if you got one that can run SK.

Using the play shortcut

I just noticed that to use the play shortcut that Sirlordted posted to actually get to my account I have to be logged in through steam to the forums, hopefully it works for the rest of you.

Going offline and Steam's response

Hey guys,

Not sure if this issue is resolved yet. As of today, opening a steam-bound SK doesn't seem to crash the Steam client for me. Though there has been no Steam update, I've opened it about 4 times now and it's worked fine. Earlier I tried what might be a possible temporary fix: I logged onto Steam then manually turned my airport off, loaded Spiral Knights from the dock so that the log-in page for SK on Steam cropped up. It'll give you the standard 'temporary network outage or server not yet fully operational' window. Turn the net back on and sign in.

I also sent a ticket to the SK and Steam support staff regarding this. SK support gave the following response:

'Greetings,

Thank you for contacting Spiral Knights support. We have received your email. In order to assist you, we will need to do a bit of research. We appreciate your patience while we do this, and we will reply again to your email when we have information to share with you. If you have any additional information to give us, or if you were able to find a resolution to your question, please reply to this email so we can update your ticket accordingly.'

Not sure when they'll be running a patch to fix this issue. Again, seems to only be a Mac issue although I've played via my brother's Steam and his crashes unexpectedly even without pulling up games.
