Well... ive really been wondering for a while.... i have only got one UV ever, on my nitro, ctr low. and i have a decent amount of 5* equipmnt ... is it uncommon not to have run into a single other UV on my way to 5* ? Am i just unlucky? or do most people buy a uv ticket? :P
UVs - Am i just unlucky??
ah i see.... maybe some people are just lucky.. cause i met with a bomber who only had fused, and he got the uvs from crafting he got shadow def med on both pieces :P also alot of people just seem to have an overloading stack of UV'd items for sale . and also i do craft 2* items every day i cant play with my mist , and i never get uvs :P oh well~
watch me buy a UV ticket for my shivermist and it be like... damage bonus vs gremlin low...
Most people get their UVs from Ragecrafting, which is where you craft the same cheap item over and over and over again in hopes it gets a good UV. This is why you can buy stuff like Brandishes and Wolver armor for about 1000 per piece (While the vendors sell it for like 7500). I still ragecraft Brandishes a lot, and so far my best is ASI high and +dam vs Gremlin med, which is now my Acheron.
It may seem costly, but what most people (like me) do is create an alternative account. After buying some CE, this second account has its energy independent from the main account, and by extension, the mist energy is also independent. This allows someone to still play Spiral Knights, and then craft two 2* items of their choice on Mist Energy alone.
EDIT** There is also Punch, who gives you variants for 20k crowns, but that tends to be reserved for things like Sealed Swords, Pulsars and items already made to 5* and the user doesn't want to remake them.
I do craft alot when i cant play.... because i have 4 accounts :)
AAND.. still no UVs ;)
I made a scale shield with very high shadow and very high elemental def yesterday, I put it on AH and could only get like 2k-ish out of it :(
If you want to make money off UVs I don't recommend crafting 1* items. 1*s are only used for T1 PvP as none of them go to 5* anymore. If you're going to craft 1* items to cater to the PvP market don't craft Shields... as they're not used.
Honestly UVs come down to being sheer numbers and being lucky. I wish you the best of luck. :)

When I'm trying to get some UVs, the first thing I do is look on the Auction House to see if I can get the UVs I want for a good price.
If I can't find anything at a reasonable price, I will start crafting the 2-star version of the item multiple times (ie "ragecrafting"). I usually only use mist for this, but sometimes I get a little impatient and burn through CE.
If that doesn't work, I will take all of my non-UVed ragecraft items over to Punch, and start buying UVs for each one, until I get something I want. Then I sell the crappy Punched UVs at the Auction House to get some of the wasted CR back. I think it is more cost-effective (but still pretty bad) to Punch several 2-star items once instead of Punching a single 5-star item many times in the future.
At the moment I've been stuck trying to get a decent UV on a Skelly Shield for a couple of weeks, but I'm still in mist-crafting mode.
I have heard in many threads that UVs occur more often when you craft that item with ce.
wow really? well that would make a little more sense because CE is like the real cash currency of spiral knights :P
I remember a thread showing an experiment with links to other threads showing the same. It does make sense, does it not?
except they have no proof, and a reasonable person would expect OOO to advertise the better rates since crafting with CE would make them money. Since OOO said nothing other than that ME is regenerating CE, a more reasonable theory is that ME and CE craft the same exact items with the same exact chances of UVs.
I craft via mist only and I get a UV pretty much couple days or ~10%. Most of them are crap that I sell on the AH for a few k cr, but I have a few good wolver caps like; 2UV Poison Max Shock Low, Freeze High, Elemental Medium. I really don't know what I want on a Snarbolax cap, so I'll just keep crafting them until I'm ready to go to the shadow lairs.
I also crafted a Fire High, Freeze Low, Curse Low Wolver coat that I upgraded to a ash tail coat and I'm probably going to craft it into a Snarbolax Coat.
I remember that thread as well, and as I recall there were just as many saying they got their best UV's from mist-crafting.
Another thing that was pointed out in said thread is that the crafts you do with CE are usually remembered more often.
Although it wouldn't surprise me if such a thing was true.
I had an instances where I crafted 100 items with Mist (1* items over several days, I wanted a specific UV on a sword for T1 PvP) and got 17 UVs, a couple of them doubles. On another set of 100 I got 3 UVs, same item being crafted, again all with Mist. I do not normally keep track that well, but then again I also am not normally crafting 10 items a day either.
I think CE and ME create UVs at the same rate personally, just that CE is remembered more because it is not free like ME.

Soo!! what ive gathered so far from this thread is
A: im just unlucky
B: if i want a UV i either need to risk the punch ticket or save CE for ragecrafting ~
Odds of getting a UV are roughly 1:10. A lot of people either rage-craft, buy the UVs outright (from somebody that rage-crafted/got lucky), or roll through Punch for something good.
