This is my alt character, and on my real steam one, it doesnt work. This happens a LOT on steam, and the best thing is to wait an hour or two for it to go, which me and a lot of others hate. This happens about 1-2 times a month, and I know steam has updates and stuff like that, but my point is, Spiral Knights on browser is a wayyy better idea.

There are some good stuff to steam though:

-Chatting to friends
-Steam trade
-Easier(I think so) to buy energy

If there are more good things tell me! But right now we need a option to convert from steam to regular, so we can play even when steam is down.

I'm not saying to fix it now, I understand, but maybe Spiral Knights on Steam wasn't that great of an idea?

Well

I think that OOO should make something about this.
Like let steam users login on SK, by placing your Steam ID as user and your steam password as your password. It really annoys me when steam dies....

Yes, same goes for Kongregate

Yes, same goes for Kongregate players. We should be able to log in here using our kongregate password and kongregate username. Or OOO should at least let us link our accounts here and recirve new passwords and usernames to play our already existing kongregate characters.

and yes, kongregate died today too, we couldnt play just like steam players

I probably woudlnt have heard of the game without steam.

It was a brilliant idea to bring more players (and more $$$).
Now the service they give is another story......

Here is what OOO should do

Give people an option to unlink their SK account from Steam.

If OOO is worried about getting into bad relation with Valve because of this move, feel free to point Valve back to us (end users of SK). Refer them back to this forum and setup a thread so we can tell them how Steam is doing more harm than good to this game. OOO does not need to get involved, just pass on the message is fine.

Blah

The ONLY reason I EVER linked my Steam account to SK was so I could voice chat with my friends.
Now, my friends hardly play the game anymore, and I'm sick of Steam.
"Give people an option to unlink their SK account from Steam." times a million.

I agree, either unlink from Steam or give a Steam login option like,

User: Steam ######
Password: ******

and not just [Steam logon]

Steam players can play SK

Steam players can play SK when Steam is down by goin' in through the Standalone Client and choosin' to sign in via Steam, which will log you in through the site and direct you back to the standalone client with your Steam ID. Only flaw of this is that the energy depot can cause it to crash, but short of that it's a pretty damn good fix for when Steam is down, considerin' that generally only lasts a couple of hours at most.

If you read the steam forums

If you read the steam forums (which I did when the game wouldn't load) the UPS blew on their servers and they had to restore everything. I have problems logging in with Steam on occasion (when the servers are up) but logging in with a non-steam account (in the steam version of the game), and then going back to my steam account allows me to login to spiral knights no problem.

I love steam, the overlay UI

I love steam, the overlay UI is [frakking] amazing. I can see how it might cause problems on lower end machines, as it consumes more resources, but all-in-all, I thoroughly enjoy it.

What OOO should have done

What OOO should have done is that before offering the choice to convert to Steam to people who just started SK, advise them of both the Pros and Cons. Right now, it's like selling cigarette to people on the street (including minors) without any warning signs. Then once people realized OMG smoking is hazardous to health and my medical bill goes up, it's too late because the damage cannot be reversed.

Seriously OOO, give us an option to unlink our account from Steam please. That workaround people suggested was A) lame, it's a workaround; B) it doesn't work for all people (doesn't work in my case) and C) you didn't give people enough warning ahead of time about the irreversible nature of the conversion and people are fixing the problem for you.

One thing people seem to have fail to mention is that Steam overlay decreases SK performance also. This can be disabled of course but once you did that, you can't buy with real world money. (It's a hassle but an obvious unnecessary one.)

you can always buy with real

you can always buy with real world money. You just can't do it in game. If you go to the energy history page on this website you can buy energy for a steam account with any method of payment you want.

Perhaps you should elaborate.

Because I can't think of a single thing that can match Steam as a digital distribution platform.

Respectfully Disagree

I think that, since Steam is such a popular service, having SK usable through it is bringing, and will continue to bring, new players and publicity. I never would have heard of this games without Steam, specifically without the winter steam achievement, but, now that I've found it, I'm completely in love. I also love that Steam trading allows for me to buy and sell CE for reclaimed/keys in TF2 or even trade for other games. Plus I can chat with Steam friends and introduce them to SK.

I guess all that makes me seem like a Steam fan girl, but I don't worship at the altar of Gabe. I know that Steam has it's problems. The most recent update has made the Mac client incredibly unstable, and when I play on my Macbook half of my games are currently causing my computer to crash. I've have to delete and then reinstall the local content for half of my library, including SK. But I still feel like Steam is doing far more good than harm for the game.

Spiral Knights released on Steam - Not so good of an idea?
I wouldn't have known this piece of art even existed without Steam. With that said, OOO (Sega) needs to market this game better. I'm already messing around with my guide for new players...cause seriously too many people quit before reaching tier 2.

Since you HAVE to use steam

Since you HAVE to use steam for voice chat, it's kinda pointless to play without it, and I rarely have any problems logging in. Even then, usually I wait 10 minutes and it's working again.

Also I really don't like kongregate running this game. It's far too deep and time-consuming to be put on a site like that, where people just go to play for an hour and quit.

For the record, there needs to be some indication when people can't hear you. Just because they don't have a mic icon doesn't mean anything. Why doesn't the standalone feature voice chat, exactly?

Also PTT needs to be on by DEFAULT.

Steam = good

I also would never have heard of Spiral Knights without steam. I'm a fan of steam, and I don't know what all the complaints about it being down are all about? Maybe it was just right around 2/14/12 that there was a big problem? I have VERY little trouble getting online with steam. Any program that runs on computers will crash, even google...

I would love to see the numbers on how many players come from steam. I think the percentage is pretty good. Looks like about 1800 players just today have been on using the steam client. Anyone know the figures for all players?

For comparison sake, it would be cool to see how many total active SK players there are, as well as numbers from every individual interface like kongregate and steam.

Maybe...

Maybe I'm just at a point in life that hang-ups, hitches, and bumps just happen... I can deal with not playing Spiral Knights every now and then. Of course, I only play a fraction of what some people play... I'm 30 years old and have kids and a wife, life goes on if Steam is down. I may have a different point of view if I were 19 and had no job/wife/kids.

I played ~60-80 hours in various games this month, I think, and had no issues getting on steam (most of my games are on steam). The only hang-up I experienced was a Spiral Knights server problem.

"I can deal with not playing

"I can deal with not playing Spiral Knights every now and then."

Now I know why Steam is so successfull...

"I may have a different point of view if I were 19 and had no job/wife/kids."

Last year in September, many Steam players weren't able to login through Steam for 4 days. The only apologize came from OOO, but Steam caused the problem, probably because they had released a client update. Would you accept that too? It was interesting to hear when a friend told me the event.
