"Patchwork Page" for imminent/in-progress server reboots.

Alright, I have concluded I can't be the only one experiencing this issue....if I am, then something's screwbally here.

I can load Google in like .3 seconds, Yahoo in a couple seconds, heck, I can load the SK Home page in a split second....but the forums take FOREVER to load. Many times, I get the 504 Gateway-Time-Out Error as well.

I've concluded that this is most likely due to their server rebooting/patch being implemented to it.

(Wolfkit's contribution): "The forums being down isn't (directly) because of the game server rebooting... They go down because whenever the game is updated, the patch notes link to the forums. And the forums can't withstand that many users at once.
Because normally, only a fraction of the playerbase uses the forums. But when OOO posts an ingame announcement linking to the forums, everyone online heads to the forums, and the forums just can't handle that.
Evidence? When OOO sent out ingame mail announcing the testing server was back up with a link to the forums, there was no game server reboot, but the forums were down for a couple of hours anyway.
"

So, my suggestion:

We need a better way for you (The Devs) to tell us when a patch is incoming/has recently happened. I just saw that there was a patch done about 4 minutes ago, which could be why I wasn't able to successfully access the forums. Now, I think we need a more effective way to see when a reboot is being done. I, for one, am not always on SK while I'm foruming and vice-versa. Therefore, I can't tell when a patch is being implemented...except for when the forums just STOP working, I suppose I can assume there is one. This, however, is not always the case, since as great as my internet *speed* is, I have common network outages.

Then, when I'm on the forums and I go to check Announcements, the page won't LOAD due to the servers being rebooted. It just seems a very ineffective way to find out if there's a patch going on.

Now, I know the home page works all the time, every time, apparently well even during patches. I also know it's usually reserved for the BIG updates to the game, or seasonal updates/promotions. But I think it'd be really nice if there were somewhere on the home page that led to a little "Patchwork Page" as I like to call it. Just a small page with continuous updates listed using the Home server (So I can like...actually load it), instead of using the servers that are being rebooted/updated to present the patch...

Anyway...[/rant], I just hate not being able to tell when a patch is really going on since they use the rebooting servers to notify us.

+1 to everything non-rant

Had my own rant about it, but Sev, as always, sums it all up for me. Vana himself knows I'd toss monkeys in there somewhere along with a side rant about the direction pokemon took and all that wonderful sidequest ranting. (jk)

I'll just say I agree with Sev.

@Skold-The-Drac:

To the first part of your paragraph: Thanks.

To the second part: HUH? I can honestly say I got lost about 6 words in to the second sentence. xD

Vanduke...monkeys...rant...pokemon...sidequest...no clue.

Honestly I thought this thread was just going to die and I was going to let it die but thanks for saving the day.

I edited the title so that it's slightly less vague.

The forums being down isn't

The forums being down isn't (directly) because of the game server rebooting...

However, putting announcements on a page other than the forums would be a good idea, as that way only people who use the forums anyway will head to the forums, so the forum server won't have to deal will much more load than usual, and the majority of the load could be put on a server dedicated for that exact purpose.

@Wolfkit:

Thanks for that information, it confirms the solidity of my suggestion I believe. I wasn't sure what the connection was between Forum-Realtime servers, since I figured they couldn't be the same one. That connection makes sense though.

Yup I would much like to see this on a page that is easy-to-access without overloading forum servers. I really doubt the Home page could get overloaded, since the regular forum-ers who are posting anyway won't navigate to the Home page most likely.

Thanks again! =]
