Hi, Nubskills here!
Just wondering which one I should get first, I'm only a few more vanas away from a FoV, so I'm trying to decide which one to go with first. Taking into account that I usually run the boss stratums(rjp+fsc) while getting gear for general clockwork runs, I'm pretty divided into which one to go with first. Thought I'd post here to see more opinions on what to choose, what would you guys recommend and why?
Fang of Vog or Blackened Crest?
Ah, forgot to mention my current equips:
DA/DTB/Faust/Kilowatt
Dark Thorn Shield
Snarby Set
I'll see what the general consensus is, and decide from the reasonings, but I'm currently a bit more orientated towards the crest lol
Blackened Crest -> Crest of Almire is a more practical choice. FoV's normal swings are subpar and noticeably slower without Vog, whereas it's charge is excellent but has a chance of setting you on fire. The shield on the other hand protects you from fire, as well as shadow damage, making it excellent for FSC as Metagenic said. Also gives you more defense in Undead/Fiemd levels.
Currently the only three things stopping me from getting a crest right now would be fov's charge, the fact that it's 5 stars and that it's fun to play with. Although I guess those were the original reasons too....The chance of fire with every hit is a nice bonus too.....
I think I could get a lot of use out of the crest too, though, seeing how fiend stratums are one of the hardest there is....Not to mention the status resists lol
Have to agree with the others here. Blackened Crest>FoV. You'll get more use out of the shield.
The only truly efficient use of the FoV is using the charge on the Jelly King. Aside from that, its damage output is outclassed by brandishes (and maybe DA too?)
Blackened Crest -> Crest of Almire. Great shield for those fiend/shock or fiend/fire depths where they do a ton of damage. Also good for FSC (although I prefer my Grey Owlite).
Fang of Vog's regular attacks are slow and weak, so its overall DPS is pretty weak. On the other hand, even the regular attacks can set monsters on fire (unlike Combuster's), and these DPS numbers ignore that. Still, I would say that the regular attacks are not impressive. As is the case with Levi/CIV, the whole point of this sword is its charge attack, which is awesome. But it is practical only if you have massive fire protection (including UVs, I'd say) or are lucky in finding remedy pills.
So Fang of Vog is just not a great sword, especially since you already have an elemental sword. On the other hand, Crest of Almire is a pretty nice shield, especially if you don't already have a shadow shield. I use CoA pretty often, and FoV really rarely.
The FoV has three places it really shines: One-shotting slag guards and trolljans, incinerating Royal Jelly, and just being hilariously fun to use. Beyond that it's not incredibly practical.
Personally I'd suggest purchasing token items in the following order:
1: Blackened Crust, especially if you don't already have a shadow shield. This is the only vana token item that needs to be upgraded (and believe me, it needs to be upgraded), so getting it first means you can put heat on it and farm some crowns while working towards the other equipment.
2: Ancient Plate Shield, especially if you don't already have a pure normal shield. The ancient plate pieces have the highest normal defence in the game, which can be very useful for levels with a high proportion of normal damage such as Deconstruction Zones and the Unknown Passage. Not everyone likes the ASD/MSD of the ancient plate armor/helm, but the shield doesn't suffer the same debuffs.
3: Fang of Vog. By this time you'll be farming FSC for fun rather than being scared crapless every time a slag crawls out of the ground, and adding the FoV to your arsenal will help spread the fiery love to every level you take it to.
All right, thanks guys, imma go get a crest now ^^
@Nicoya-Kitty
I wouldn't get Ancient Plate Shield over FoV. There is a thread (http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/43992) in the Testing Feedback section of the forum that said that in the test server, Gremlins do elemental damage (not just the Scorchers) so you'd be better off with an elemental shield if that update ever happens. And in the Unkown Passage, the Void monsters still do the specific damage type that their normal counterparts do so you'd also be better off with a Piercing/Shadow/Elemental shield.
@Fraxur My understanding is that only zombies and lichens do special type damage in the Unknown Passage, unless that's being changed in a future update.
If gremlins do get changed to elemental damage, though, then that will indeed make the GoS the shield of choice for decon zones.
@Nicoya Lumbers do elemental damage, and it's definitely a good idea to be able to take a hit from them without your shield breaking.
@Fradow The wiki indicates void lumbers do pure normal, and that matches the health pips I've seen flying in videos of the unknown passage.
I must say that is how I felt on my first FSC run XD.
Back to the topic:
So far I've accumulated 13 Almirian Crests (I'm still just farming the citadel instead of fighting Vanaduck as well). In the future (very FAR future) when I've got every 5 star item I need, I'm going to FINALLY get a blackened crest for a specialized shield set (Skelly shield doesn't take my fancy :L). I've seen the FoV in use and it is AWESOME but in T3 getting set on fire is a definite no-no. After a few charges with the FoV (and some bad luck) the fire would kill you if you don't have any fire protection. But if I've got more then 60 Almirian Crests by then I plan on getting an Ancient Plate Helm first and wear it as a costume (it has friken horns!!)
@Fradow
I think a most shields would be able to tank a lumber hit at full health though, I seem to do fine with my dark thorn shield, even though it takes a hefty chunk out of my shield.
@Jiasen
Lol fov on JK would be pretty good, and I saw Tsu(Tsubasa-no-me) in LD today one-shotting players(me included) with it. It can have quite a lot of LD potential, especially if you travel with other team members and unleash the charge on distracted enemies.
Fang of vog charge atack is the only god use of this sword, then fang must only used like a secondary sword not primary (Primary are DA/GF, Brandwish lines, Secondary are: Cutter lines, Piercings swords, Fang of vog), but it is still a very good sword, i bring whit it to vanaduke and darkfire.
Wow I never thought of FoV being an effective Lockdown weapon :L. It could potentially be the most powerful or most dangerous set-up depending on how often you get self-set on fire, your charge time and the help of your team i.e grouping and distracting the opposition while you charge up.
I enjoy post 15. Brandish being a primary, and toothpicks being secondary.
I tip my hat to you, sir.
I don't see why the piercing swords should be considered secondary. Certainly they are at least as important as the shadow swords. The only reason why elemental swords might be more important is that elemental is good for FSC.
@Jiasen
Saw some players again in LD using FoV, its charge can be pretty deadly if it hits lol, I heard sword damage bonuses still increase the self damage, so vog would be the best for it.
@Demonicsothe
Was gonna reply to that when I saw it, but nah......
@Bopp
/agree with Bopp, plus the majority of LD weapons are either from the piercing or sealed lines.
Divine Avenger/elemental Brandishes > Fang of Vog
Blackened Crest ==> Crest of Almire (one of the best shields for FSC)
