Epic Server Lag

So I've been playing Spiral Knights with my roommates since the game released on the fourth, and starting last week we started getting ridiculous spikes in latency. It's at the point that we actually can't do tier 3 runs because we can't time our shielding because the action goes off about a second after we press 'x' on our keyboards. The bar on the top right is constantly showing 2-3 bars, with 2 being the one that stays more often than not. Now, before you start asking the usual customer service questions, yes, I checked if it was our computers or our ISP. Our internet speed is fine and I talked to a representative the other day to make sure it was working fine and confirmed it with speedtest.net. And since I use a pc and my roommate uses a mac and we both have the same issue, it's definitely not the computer, so I'm left to conclude that the problem is on Three Rings' end. We live in Baltimore, so I understand if there was latency because of that, but it was fine up until last week, so i'm just confused.

Is there a way for us to improve latency on our end, or is it just the influx of new players and the servers can't handle it?

Looking forward to a reply.

Playing with my friend at his

Playing with my friend at his house, we do invariably suffer a bit of lag. Alone, we both have no issues unless the game itself is causing problems (and at that point everyone is complaining, not just us). Reviewing the connections for the game however we noted that the game itself forms at least 10 connections upon start up. Why, I don't know. I'd think one connection would suffice. But with that many connections going it's possible that it's doing other stuff while you're hacking and slashing, like checking for mail and browsing news about the game and stuff.

I dunno though, i get the latency problems even when I'm playing by myself. I'm just guessing the servers can't handle the amount of people playing mixed with the fact I'm on the east coast.

Speed doesn't mean that much

Speed doesn't mean that much for this game. You might want to try Pingtest.net instead. (shoot over to a West Coast USA server for the best simulation)

The only time I have connection problems is when someone in my building starts up BitTottent. There's only been a few times when the server at Three Rings end went completely pear-shaped

Frustrated...

Pingtest to San Francisco says 28ms ping, 0% packet loss, and 3ms jitter yet I am constantly disconnected or suffer huge rubber banding issues. I play a lot of online games with no trouble, but have a lot of trouble with this one.

Sometimes it's fine, but when it's like it has been for the last hour or so it's just a waste of energy to even try.

@ d0gr0ck Pingtest to San

@ d0gr0ck

Pingtest to San Francisco gives me 202ms with 0% packet loss and 22ms jitter. That's due to me being on the east coast, but I didn't have problems until recently. The response times i get in game suggest at a ping of around 500ms though, so I'm very inclined to think it's server-side. Other games (WoW on a US west based server) have given me an average of around 220ms, so it's definitely not the ISP or the router, as I was doing this with both of my roommates using the internet.

Have you tired opening the ports listed in the Technical Help Sticky? If not, an examination of your home network may be in order. (perhaps a router firmware update)

That Jitter represents the range of ping times from the mean reported. That could easily cause flinging as ping fluctuates. Spiral Knights seems to be much more sensitive to ping times than most other MMO games. Though be aware that the guys at Three Rings are trying there best to optimize everything they can at their end.

For the record I have a ~100ms, 0% loss, 3ms jitter out of the Eastern USA. I experience no problems, even during peak times. Only when a housemate starts torrenting do things become a problem. Even then, triggering Quality of Service on my router (even with wireless) guarantees a smooth experience.

300ms, 100 jitter

I can barely play the game, with the lag i'm getting (approx 12000ms, 1 bar), while i can play WoW perfectly. Please fix that, I really like this game. It's true that my location (Brazil) doesn't help much in this, but i can play most other games without lag.
