I made another character the other day, and found out that it takes 5ME for every character you create.
Why?
What do you guys think?
Character Creation Cost
It cost 5 energy to enter the game. Before you even have seen a gate.
Remember though that there are monsters on that first little path, so the game, I think, treats it as a gate cost to 'land' in a sort of adventure area.
It's a weird mechanic.
I think it's meant to prevent gaining crowns by adventuring without paying energy.
Is there even a reason to make more than one character? Even if you're playing through earlier parts of the game to play with a friend who is just starting or something it seems like you could just as easily put crappy gear on your first character instead of putting crappy gear on a new one.
Multiple guilds if you really want to.
Different color scheme.

Though hmm, I thought it cost 10 energy to start a new character, not 5? Did that change?
I suppose you could also think of it as the Energy you "lost" or "paid" as part of the crash-landing, or taking the pod in the first place.
The reason for the energy cost for starting a new game, is to stop an exploit, where one would start a new character but leave the game before you reached rescue camp. You would keep the crowns (and mats) you collected, and when you logged in again you would restart the first level. Rinse and repeat, and one could play for an infinite amount of time (and earn crowns accordingly) without ever paying a single point of energy.

I believe landing cost is the same as entering a rescue camp gate, and that cost has changed around a few times.
Why yes, it does cost energy to do the gates in the tutorial.
