Hello,
I currently am using Divine Veil, Snarbolax Coat, and Crest of Almire as my armor, but this brings up one problem:
Too much shadow protection, and not enough Elemental/Piercing, so I decided I would get a Helmet as it is the only type of Armor that I have only one of.
So, to keep this short, here are the questions:
What is a good Helmet that has Elemental and Piercing protection, but does not require doing a Shadow Lair?
and
Would the 'Dragon Scale Helm' be a good choice for my Helmet?
Need advice on selecting my next Helmet.
I know that you said you wanted a helmet, but have you considered switching out Snarbolax Coat for Skolver Coat? They are almost identical, except that Skolver offers piercing (and more freeze, and less poison). Divine Veil with Skolver Coat is one of the most popular general-purpose armor sets out there.
If you specifically want a helmet that defense against elemental AND piercing, then Dragon Scale Helm is in fact your only option. There are only two 5* helmets in the entire game that offer two non-normal defense types.
Armors with no normal defense have generally proven to be subpar choices (especially if you have multiple armor sets, but even if you don't), because you encountered a large percentage of normal damage everywhere you went, even in tier 3. However, this latest patch apparently changed some monster damage types around, so I don't know whether that is still the case.
There's still a lot of split normal damage in T3, and pure normal in fact. I got hit by a trolljan sword attack in FSC just this afternoon, and it was still pure normal. It seemed that the dash and fart attacks were shadow/normal.
I have, Skolver was my first 5* armor, but I am aiming for a Helmet, because I have only one. Now that you say it's my only option, I have one last question:
Is it worth it to get the Dragon Scale, or should I just get a new coat and helm? (Or use my old Skolver with a new helm)
Fyi, I do FSC the most, so allot of shadow and normal isn't bad, it's just that in other places it isn't that good.
Piercing/elemental combo levels aren't really all that often, and the only time you're likely to run into something like that is against Ash Tail themed Wolver Dens. It doesn't make for very multi-purpose armour unless combined with Snarbolax tbh - I wouldn't bother with the Dragon Scale. Your current options of Snarbolax and Skolver coat with Divine Veil works fine for most situations I can think of, being able to stand up to the worst status ailments. Skolver/Veil gives moderate defence against anything you'd care to run across; Snarbolax/Veil would be better for FSC runs.
(Of course Vog/Veil would probably be optimal for FSC, but that's irrelevant...)
I would personally find the Shock/Fire/Curse/Freeze status combo from Veil/Skolver to be more useful than the Fire/Poison/Freeze status combo from DSH/Snarbolax, if only because Poison isn't often fatal.
tl;dr: Wouldn't bother with Dragon Scale. Keep the helm and get a Vog Coat if you want FSC-specific armor. Otherwise use Veil and Skolver as decent multi-purpose armour (this assuming you're not after a set for every situation).
Ah, so Demonicsothe and I completely misunderstood you. You aren't trying to craft a general-purpose set; you're already into crafting specialized sets. I would definitely not get Dragon Scale Helm then. As Aureate pointed out, it is optimal only in piercing/elemental levels, which are not common.
Instead, just craft a solid piercing set, elemental set, and shadow set. For example, if you're into swords, then these could be Skolver/BTS, Vog Cub/Grey Owlite, and Snarbolax/Crest. On those occasions when you need a mix, just mix pieces from these. For example, in FSC consider Vog Cub with Crest, and in SGWW mix Skolver with Snarbolax.
Bopp gave the standard swordsmen armour. Gunslingers have a choice of piercing and elemental armour, both giving asi bonus.
I believe bomb bonus armours only give elemental defence.
If you wish to have sets that don't give weapon bonuses, the new hall of heros have several merchants in the back near Barrus. Each of them sells armour and shield in a set, one for each damage type. Miracle, skelly, and jelly. Elemental, shadow, and piercing.
One more thing I'd like to add. Counting shields among your overall defence is not an accurate way of representing total defence. The shield is only active while being used. If you do take damage, it isn't because you need a better shield. If your shield breaks due to tanking many hits, you either need to dodge more or get the right shield for the right defence.
If you wish to have a general purpose set, one that defends against all damage types, yes.
