It just seems like a giant waste of 3 energy for a handful of crowns and heat and a small chance at a token and an even smaller chance at an item. Am I missing something?
Does it make any sense to open treasure gates?
I only open treasure rooms when I'm near the end of my play time and I have leftover mist energy that I won't use on elevators. If I'm certain to have leftover mist, I'll spend the 3 for the treasure room because they'll be wasted otherwise, since I tend to play each night at the same time so my mist tank always fills completely anyway.
If you're desperate for a material that can be bought with tokens, that may also make it worthwhile to open a gate, since the odds of getting a token seem decent and a treasure room is cheaper than playing another level to try to find one.
Danger rooms are almost always worth the three energy if you have the gear and the skills to defeat them. That one time we had quick silvers and stupidly unleashed a mechaknight was not so great, though.
I never open treasure doors anymore. Even when CE was 2000 crowns, even in a party of 4, it wouldn't earn back the same value in crowns that you just put into opening the door (unless you put an extraordinarily high value on heat, I suppose.)
Good point about leftover mist energy, though. I'll remember that if I'm ever in for a short play session. ;)
Agree with Icee...especially because in my own experience I was the one trying to kill the quicksilvers with shock potions...
lol, noobs at work.
I find it useful. ME is finite per day, but infinite over time. Patience is a virtue. Go enjoy your significant other for an hour or so and you've made up that spent ME.
If you're on a full party, sometimes it's worth it. I mean, it costs 3 energy; On current prices, that's about 120cr. Usually, those treasure boxes can give around 50 crowns, sometimes spark tokens and etc. 50 crowns across four players, is 200cr. So basically, you get a little bit of profit. Token value varies a bit, but I'd say grims/forges are 750cr - 1000cr each at the moment. Depends on what material you'd decide to sell. But in general, getting tokens would be very worth it.
Though I'd recommend opening the boxes before you open the gate, if possible, using an alchemer or some other gun good for that. Sometimes you end up just getting tiny amounts of heat. It's a small gamble.
I run two accounts (individually) and I rarely use the entire mist bar on both characters, so often I'll set aside 10 or so for extra stuff like this. It's worth it for the novelty factor and the chance to get something nice.
I see it as a slot machine, more or less. It's like placing a bet. If you like to gamble .... well, it's a small bet. Why not?
I always open them. It's 45 minutes worth of energy, and I usually have to interrupt my play session at least once for at least that long to deal with stuff in the real world anyway. Winning back that 3 energy isn't going to get me down another depth level, so it would otherwise just be absorbed into the 100 mist energy cap that I'd come home to the next day anyway. Why not spend it on a small chance of getting something rare, and a guaranteed small number of crowns to help recuperate the loss?
OR, Look at it this way --
If 100 energy is roughly equivalent to .... let's say, 3800 crowns, then....
3800/100 = 38, so each point of energy is roughly 38 crowns. Multiply by 3, and you get about 114 crowns to open the gate. No, you're not likely to win that back in the boxes, but I'd spend 100 crowns per token, sure. If I get a token, it's worth it to me. Sometimes you get as many as two tokens behind a single gate. It's just luck. You're basically being given a chance to gamble when you see one of these rooms.
What's more, I can't even count the number of times I've seen people spend 400 crowns on a stupid 4-health vitapod at the subtown vendor, something they'll replace within ten minutes of the tier run ANYWAY. That's FAR more of a waste of crowns, in my mind.
For some reason, when it comes to crowns .... people can't spend them fast enough. When it comes to energy, people are tightwads. It's a perception issue. They're actually just both types of currency, and are completely interchangable. Yes, energy is what gets you down into the clockworks, but you can convert those crowns you keep spending like water into energy at ANY time. You can enter the energy/crown market in the options menu no matter where you are -- you can (and should) think of crowns in terms of crystal energy, and vice versa. It's actually USEFUL to do so, as it gives you another angle to determine something's value.
Yes, I'm willing to open those doors for 100 - 130 crowns a pop. They don't come up that often, and I like the tokens.
*shrug*
I don't think I've ever gotten anything less than 3 tokens from a treasure room.
I would pay 15 CE to go to those maps.
Dashiva.. do you mean enegry guarded treasure rooms, or the treasure vault? because i find that to be true for the vaults, which are free, but not the gates
Treasure gates i open when i feel like it, on a whim. I'm more curious about danger rooms, anyone challenges them? I'm thinkining to try to solo the second stratum in tier 1 with 2-3* equip, the amount of mats drops should be good. How can i also ensure i'll hit a map with a danger room?
I think danger rooms only happen the levels with the cog/gear graphic, right? Not sure the exact names though, they don't all have them.
You can definitely handle Tier 1 danger rooms with that gear, thats roughly what I'm running with right now and they're not much trouble, except maybe the ones that are almost completely covered with spikes, just because it hinders your ability to run and gun/melee.
You should definitely be able to handle most or all t1 arenas with 2-3* gear. I have found the freezing vaporizer line of bombs rather nice for handling the arenas. It really helps to cut down on the feeling of being overwhelmed, and even mobs that resist elemental take a fair bit of damage from unfreezing. Basically the key to solo arenas is to be slow and methodical about it (other than perhaps blitzing healers, but that is usually pretty unpleasant even if you do manage to kill him).
shoot, move, shoot, move, shoot, move, shoot, move, repeat until all dead.
Even works on Gremlin healers if you can focus 'em down. Takes awhile, but it's a danger room. Hell if I'm not going to treat it like there's danger involved.
the only part of arenas that trips me up sometimes is the 3rd stage with the gun puppy hell. i spend most of the time trying to dodge/shield and anytime i stop to get a few shots or slashes in, i'm getting blasted from all directions. usually just run arround charging then attacking, but it still can get messy.
Very often I have just an hour or less for a game. In that case I'd rather open every energy gate I find because I know there's no way I will use my daily mist energy limit.
Of course if I know I can play all evening long I don't open them at all.
btw, occasionally a treasure gate actually leads to something more than just treasure...
theres a jelly farm gate that i always do (not sure which farm) that I always do, splits into an alternate path and you can clear both paths of enemies (if you are careful not to procede into the room that the path joins together in before cleared the other (so it basically bumps up the crowns and heat rewards nicely)
i agree, they suck :)
