Darkfang Shield: Should it be rare or common?

Just trying to pull this discussion out of the expansion mission paywall thread.

So, the Darkfang shield: Personally I think it should stay rare. Other than looking different and having no alchemy line, it doesn't have any properties that meaningfully differentiate it from the already common-as-dirt Wise Owlite Shield.

I agree with it staying rare, though I enviously want one, its because they are so rare and why I hunt clockworks daily for em. Its like the scissor blades. A merely reskinned collectors item. It whats make MMO's go round. Rare items.

Darkfang Shield, you say?

You made me think.

Crimson Order = Gremlins
Gremlins = Darkfang Thwackers
Darkfang Thwackers = Darkfang Shield

I can see that shield becoming common P2P content very soon...

The real question is, what

The real question is, what other rare equip drops besides the darkfang do we have left that are currently available in-game? Answer: none. No reason to think that the darkfang is going to be left alone when all the others have either been molded into regular equip lines (like the quicksilver set), or removed from the game (magikat hat). Regardless of whether or not players want it to remain a rare drop, my bet is that we'll be seeing a lot more of the darkfang in the future--if not with the expansions missions, then later on as a boss token item when King T is introduced.

@Thimol
It's also easy to say OOO is an awesome company without thinking at all. Also it's easy to write crap like you just did.

The reason I say this now is the development happening in SK. I play since beta, I payed a bit for CE and my counter already says 50+ days. The last updates really were more and more oriented to P2P people and things were only available if you payed with real money. The Silver Keys for accessoires, silver keys to get shadow keys, the "special" accessoires with energy pack, etc. And now after reading that they changed Expansion missions from CE to "purchase", why shouldn't I think OOO starts to only wanting to suck money of people's wallets? If this question would've been asked a few months earlier, I wouldn't say "with purchase". Now it sounds perfectly reasonable that OOO wants to do that.

I never said that. You obviously have a problem with dissent.

Also it's easy to write crap like you just did.
Also what the hell is this supposed to mean? If you're going to recycle what I'm saying to use against me, do it right.

Of course there's going to be more P2P as the game develops. Three Rings is not developing this game out of the kindness of their heart and letting us enjoy while they bear the burden of paying off all the expenses that come with making game and maintaining the crap that they need to actually be able to make it available to the public.

Err, you were the first bashing Asukalan and me for saying that it will be for purchase. You obviously don't agree and when someone has other opinions than you, you flame them.

Sure there will be P2P junk like those accessoires. They're really meaningless and I ignored that for the most time. Just the last weeks there was really no new real content for endgame players. Only more crappy accessoires like Dragon Wings, Love Aura. Seems like they gain a lot of money with this so OOO doesn't stop. Reading about a new boss which could be a nice new content for older players sounded exciting. Reading that it's P2P only not. Especially if SK advertises with FREE TO PLAY everywhere.

Saying that OOO needs money to maintain this game is not an excuse. What was the idea of microtransactions again? Oh yeah, making people have access to pretty much everything and let them pay what they want.

And now I'll stop writing with you because I know this discussion will never end and Nicoya asked about the shield. Not about missions and F2P/P2P. I said what my opinion is and that stays.

That's not what you said. You said that I said that OOO was an awesome company. I never said that. If you're going to pull that sort of stunt, I suggest you get some practice first.

Seems like they gain a lot of money with this so OOO doesn't stop.

Duh. If you got a fat wad of cash for every time you farted, you'd drive your entire neighborhood out because of how bad it'd smell for all the farts you let rip.
All the P2P content so far are optional turds that you can really do without. You yourself said that, so I don't know why you're complaining. They impact the story very little, and are either not worth pursuing or too hard for most.

I had to LOL at the fart analogy.

That being said, i really don't follow what your stance is on this debate. Are you for the Darkfang shield remaining a rare drop? I know I don't want it to be available to everyone, but like asuka said, I believe it will eventually end up as a free item with purchase of certain mission packs, or something along those lines.

I'm pleased that you used irony correctly, btw. I'm sure calling it ironing was a typo.

I'm sure calling it ironing was a typo.

It was from The Simpsons.

Anyway, I don't care either way, as long as the devs decide that there should still be rare equips. If not, then I believe that the shield should remain an enemy drop-only equip.

But like I said I don't care for it because it's a rather mediocre shield. Unless it gets an upgrade. (hint hint)

Hmm?

I don't think any argument for rare items makes much sense with the Darkfang Shield - it is only rare right now because its means of acquisition is not implemented.

If they devs wanted to make a truly rare item that will never have a common means of acquisition then they would do so and tell us that it is so. I would highly approve of such things, ever multiplayer game needs those rare status symbols - sometimes the symbols are of wealth, sometimes they are of skill, I prefer the latter but in the end it doesn't really matter which.

To get it back on topic like the rest of us had been doing...

I think it should stay rare. It doesn't have any much more of a bonus than the Owlite does, but it is nice as a rare drop "reskin"
Perhaps maybe say dropping a few in the AH (100 or less) would help spread popularity of it, and we will be able to see more of it instead of one knight carrying it.

Still awesome either way. I wont have it anytime soon.

If Rare, Make a 5* Version with the Recipe having a 1% Chance of Appearing in Basil's Inventory. Increase Drop Rate in Crates by a little.

If not Rare, make it the same as Quicksilver Mail/ Blackened Crest; A Boss Token Reward. 5* Recipe as Common as Crest of Almire/Mercurial Mail.

In my Opinion, I don't Care. It's OOO's Choice.

I'm actually not a big fan of rarity for the sake of rarity. If something is rare, I can be fine with that, but if they stop making something rare it's no chip off my shoulder. I just think that there isn't a good argument against it either than prestige and rarity, two things which are rather superficial.

"I just think that there isn't a good argument against it either than prestige and rarity, two things which are rather superficial."

Prestige and rarity drive the SK economy. No one *needs* UVs for clockworks; no one needs auras; no one needs costumes.

It is unclear to me why these two criteria should be considered any more "superficial" than an item that just makes slightly bigger numbers pop up when you hit the imaginary monsters with your imaginary sword.

And your point is?

Sure, there are already rare/prestige items in the game. How's that an argument against keeping any one particular item rare?

As for your snobbish "wings etc. aren't rare/prestigious" line: rarity and prestige are relative. You may be swimming in shadow dwings. Doesn't mean everyone is.

I was kinda checking the stats on the Darkfang shield and it seems pretty handy. I was wondering if there were other "vanity" equipment like that that offer some alright stats. I know there's the scissor-blades but from what I understood those are pretty much a reskinned leviathan. I also wonder if the Metal Sonic armor had stats, because there seems to be very few "rare" items that are nothing more than cosmetic.

This shield at least seems useful, you know? Even as a four-star.

My point is that if one of

My point is that if one of the items stops being rare and prestigous, there are still others. And to be honest, if I had a Darkfang Shield right now, I'd sell it while it's still valuable. They've, in the past, made rare items common, causing the price to plummet, and with the upcoming content involving gremlins, it seems fairly obvious that the Darkfang Shield would be something they'd decrease the rarity of.

Also, I didn't say Wings aren't rare/prestigous, I said Dragon Wings aren't. But, like you said, such things are relative. To me, a Darkfang Shield isn't prestigous because it's effectively useless. I don't care for the look of it, and it doesn't reach five star, which makes Owlite superior. Also, it doesn't necessarily mark anything special, all it says is you either got lucky once from a Treasure Box, or spent a bunch of CE to buy it (as opposed to the Groundbreaker sets, which obviously indicate Beta players, and therefore actually has meaning) So, if prestige/rarity is relative, then there's no point in keeping it rare. Just because you like it rare doesn't mean everyone does.

Thematically, it makes sense

Thematically, it makes sense to make it a boss reward for a gremlin boss, and would be even better if it was given an upgrade that relates to the on-going content. E.g. Blackened Crest to Crest of Almire, Darkfang Shield to Crest of Crimson Order or whatever.

I'd like this to remain rare. As a merchant I've either dealt in or seen 90% of the items SK has to offer, the remaining 10% being the godforsaken items suck as Catalyzers, Big Angry Bombs, and Bombastic Demo, with the minority of the 10% being rare items such as Zee Cores, Darkfang Shields, ASI VH items, etc. It remains a challenge in the post-endgame state to deal in said items, and I'd appreciate the challenge of finding or brokering one rather than grinding tokens to get it.

I'd like it to be attainable. Aside from lacking an owlite shield of my own, I'd absolutely love to have a gremliny item... just to be cool.

If you want rare things, then perhaps OOO could make some reskins of items, and then make them drop randomly in the clockworks. It wouldn't be too hard for them to make a gobbledeegoop reskin shield of barborous thorn.

The silent minotiry....

I, Danizpsycho, am in posession of one, and I gave my fair share of F-bombs and S-storms when I was informed Nick had plans for it, since being one of the handful of people to own one does mean something to me, as it were. In my eyes, making it obtainable would remove all prestigous value from it, And sitting in haven shouting "I had Darkfang before it was popular" would just turn me into a dumb hipster. I suggested in the ever-expanding "Mission packs with CE" Thread that instead of making it a token item, introduce another version of a gremlin shield, like an "Ironclaw Defender" Or something of that nature, or maybe bump Darkfang to 5*, and have said other shield take its place, and skin it differently.

This way, all the gremlin lovers, and all the avid collectors, will both A, have a rare item to be sought after, which does encourage people to play more, more runs means more CE, so it will keep people playing. And B, it will give all those that dont want to spend a decade in a Decon zone, a chance to have something almost as good.

So from me, +1 to it staying rare.

Personally I can care less. IMO it's like a weakened elemental CoA, furthermore Owlite shields are pretty much the ONLY elemental shields in game (of course there's the heater shield which is a lil' less pratical, and the breakers). AND Owlite is a practical shield too.

I still think it's a kewl collector item like scissor blades, stats wise however... Not as kewl.

Even though I often agree with Nicoya...

As far as I know Blackened Crest and Mercurial Set used to be rare drops. Now they are available with tokens and nothing terrible happens. I don't see problem with Darkfang Shield being changed the same way. Of course it probably will get some alchemy path and so on (just like Blackened Crest and Mercurial Set).

EDIT: I can understand there are some players who feel the need to collect rare items that few have, so I'm all for introsuction of some very rare drops in form of fancy reskins like Scissors Blade. Especially it would be cool to have rare reskins of shields like Defender, Grey Owlite Shield or Dread Skelly Shield that one can wear in Haven and show off.

Honestly, this stuff follows a pattern.

Sealed Sword and Antigua were rare drops, Chroma Set and Salamander Set were Rare Drops, Mercurial Set was a Rare Drop, Blackened Crest was never a rare drop, because it never (don't listen to Ondore's lies) dropped, but the Crest of Almire was available before it's release leading to people believing that it was.
The Darkfang shield will follow suit, becoming a relatively common item.

It's upcoming availability isn't going to change anything, the only thing I can see happening is that, much like the other items, it becomes incorporated into an Alchemy Tree with other related items.

Has anyone even decided as to...

This whole argument really is starting to get on my nerves now, as more people than I can count on my fingers have pointed out to me that my shield has "no use" and that its vastly inferior to the Oh-So-Coveted grey owl. Has anyone even tested this? I'd use my own owl, but it has Uvs that would void the test, so if anyone has a Grey owl without an elemental boost, and wants to sit and tank T3 lumbers and pups, IGN Danizpsycho and we can finally see what difference it makes?
