When we eventually get PvP I propose a bi-weekly tournament for MANLY MEN.
This tournament will not be for the weak, meek, mild or the cowardly. This will be the tournament Chuck Norris, Jesse Perring, Carl Sagan, and Rosie O'Donnell will wish they could take part in.
Point of this tournament and mission statement; Fun. And to display your manliness, and gratuitous amounts of chest hair. This tournament will be about skill and not about who has farmed/bought the best equipment. The fun in this tournament is everyone is viable and able to take part in it, from new players, to paying players, to free players.
Requirements;
5/10CE fee (to be decided)to whoever we figure out is trustworthy enough to make a side-account specifically for collecting fee's and distributing the rewards.
Level 10 Proto equipment.
Big, manly hands.
Mustache. (negotiable)
Positive attitude.
Illegal;
Anything other than Proto Equipment. This is a manly tournament, everyone is on a level battle (playing) field. No cowards who rely on equipment need bother with this epic tournament for BAMF who only rely on their skill, rippling biceps and massive bulges.
This includes, Trinkets.
Costumes (Until we can clarify there won't be any bugs/glitches/loop-holes that allow you to get bonus stats)
Bombs (sorry bomb players :[ )
Rules (sofar);
Disconnecting from the fight is an automatic disqualification. The opposing player can either take the win like a coward or man it up and agree to a re-match.
All players will be inspected before the match. You MUST have the "Allow full inspect" box ticked under your character view screen.
Both players must screenshot the end of the match using F12, as to settle any possible disputes between peasants and babies who haven't grown a sufficient amount of knuckle hair.
Men take losses like gymnasts take falling on their necks from 14 feet above the ground. With grace. Banter is not frowned upon, but breaking the forum rules(which will apply to the tournament; read them here. http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/1413) or generally being a cowardly troglodyte is instant disqualification and expulsion of taking part in any further tournaments under the perpetrating character.
The final victor takes the accumulation of all the entry fees. There is no second place. We will run in a bracket format (http://www.baggo.com/images/sub/tournamentBracket.jpg)
Champions will be recorded in the eventual official [insert tournament name here] Thread for bragging rights.
Possible special rewards for people who have won X amount of times or have a winning streak.
Thoughts? This is what I have so far. Anyone have anything to add? How many beefcakes would be interested in this tournament?
No.
I have a BIG SWORD. BIG SWORD GO BASH BASH. BASH SKULL.
BRING SKULL TO WIFE. TRADE SKULL FOR SAMMICH. MMM.
Portals.
I personally thought the PvP during preview was fun. Some may even say...manly fun.
This would be interesting if it wasn't just limited to Proto gear. There's simply no variety. Everyone's the same.
Something like a T2 PvP (1 - 3 star gear allowed) tournament with some few rules like no Antigua or Heart Trinkets, maybe add some other interesting stuff to specific matches like "only swords allowed", "cannot change aim with mouse, only keyboard" (Using the commands for face north/east/etc), "no fire resist allowed, only fire-inducing weapons allowed", and etc. Just throwing some fun ideas.
Though this is a MANLY TOURNAMENT FOR MANLY MEN. So maybe everything should be allowed with no restrictions, but just up to 3 star gear.
Preview PvP was everyone with DA and GF with Vog Cub and Omegas 1-shotting eachother.
If that isn't boring and lacking variety than I don't what it is.
mmm.. girls with chest hair and big, manly hands.
just...wanna suck on them calloused fingers. mmm, chest hair

To be honest, I like the idea of a Proto-only restriction because it means everyone has a fair shot at it. No barrier to entry, no advantages. Even limiting it to 2* could swing things one way or the other (although 2* might be a good place to do the next one).
I'd be interested.
Back in Eve, my old corp had a similiar idea. We'd hold tech 1(lowest tech) frigate(smallest ship hull) tournaments (usually 2v2).
It's minimal cost, great for betting, and tons of fun. Winner gets bragging rights and a cut of the entry fees.
And with all this talk about muscular hairy women, I can't wait to participate!
WHY NOT HAVE RANKED PVP?!
I'd LOOOOOVE THAT. Do not make this mandatory. Ranked tier requirements.
I personally like the idea of a proto gear competition, but limiting it to 1-3* may be a good idea.
Anyone want to try to persuade me why extending the limitation to "nub" gear in general is better than Proto-only? The only advantage I can think of would be "variety". But my idea to begin with wasn't for having variety; I understand by the way, why people want variety. I also understand why people like Magnus want to show off their rare-gear, or just faceroll over people with lesser gear. Maybe there is some advantage I haven't thought of yet?
But like I said, this tournament is for Manly Men. It isn't going to be something everyone will want to do. If only 1 other person wants to do this with me, I would be just as satisfied as if 1000 people wanted to do it.
We can always do different "Rounds". Pistol rounds, rounds for certain niche weapons (the troika for example), bomb rounds etc. As a bonus for extra prizes.

I am a manly man and I accept your challenge.
An interesting idea, to say the least.
However, like others have stated, I too have an issue with proto-only equips. Although skill would indeed be used during these matches, they'd be exact mirror-matches. No advantages or disadvantages.
And although those make for EXCELLENT final bosses, it wouldn't quite work for PvP. Boxers, for example: They have speed, reaction time, weight, strength etc. advantages and disadvantages against their foes.
Although they are indeed using the same gear, this doesn't apply to Spiral Knights, where everyone would be the exact same.
So I propose an idea: 3 different tourneys.
The Proto tourney would be, as suggested before, exact mirror match-ups.
The Jelly Tourney would be for gear 1-3 stars. Great for tier 1-2 fighters who have outgrown their beloved protogear.
The Trojan Tourney allows 4-5 star gear. This is for the best of the best, no doubt. Matches in this tourney would be intense.
You don't have to use the name or even the idea, just a suggestion.
That being said, I'd love to participate, whether it is protogear only or I'm allowed to use my true gear in the Jelly Tourney.
I agree with having only proto gear, but maybe change it to proto armor only. Having different armor totally ruins pvp because armor makes pvp into rock paper scissors. You have armor that defends against the opponent's weapon, and your opponent's armor doesn't defend against your weapon, guess who wins? If both players have equally strong armor, why not just make it proto only?
@Endgame; my whole concept would be perfect if SK had a skill system. However it is only a right click game. However we do have reaction time, strategy, techniques etc.
Charge attacks, dodging, kiting, feinting, shielding, knock-back, combos, canceling (shielding before finishing a combo) etc. Instead of LOLOL I 1-SHOT U B4 U 1SHAWT ME LULULUZLUZLULUZLULUALAWLALWALWALWLAUWALWUAWLUWLAUAHEUEHUEHEUEHEU You actually have to finesse, and strategy.
The thing with using different tier'd weapons; or people having different weapons/armor at all is that they ONLY change stats. Period. So it will eventually come down to who has the better gear, or simply by chance has gear that counters their opponents. Which isn't fun at all IMO.
And if we did do different tiers like that suggestions then it would have to be 5 different tiers, because each tier is grossly superior to the last. No one would win the 4-5 tier tourney with 4* equips. Period.
My idea was to put together something fun that doesn't exclude anyone, and where the hardcore grinders and people who spend ~$200 for CE aren't immediately winning every time. Which is what will happen in regular PvP. Regular PvP will come down to, just like before release, who has the best gear and gets their hit off first. Notice there was no plural on "hit".
Search on youtube "Spiral Knights PvP". Watch how ridiculous and boring it is. 90% 1-shots, everyone in the same gear. Yawn-fest.
Touche.
You do have several valid points- can't have someone hacking away at someone with their Arc razor while their opponent has only a bolted blade, can we?
And you're also right about people all using the same armor, just because it's effective.
However, to keep things balanced and still have variation between copetitiors, maybe they should be allowed one equip that isn't a protogear? Perhaps you're allowed to pick one gear (up to the 3-stars) in the fight. That way, you still get to show off your weapons while also showing your skill.
@Endgame.
There will still be regular PvP to show off your items. I'm sure we'll all see Magnus 1-shotting people in a magikat hat; for the sole purpose of being seen in a magikat hat.
IMO regular PvP is the place to do the show-boating and preposterous face-rolling I had something different in mind, because it will undoubtedly be fun at first; it will quickly grow stale for how lame the actually PvP play will be.
My take on it anyways.
Does Groundbreaker gear count as proto gear for us beta players?
And as far as I'm concerned, a Vog Cub costume over proto gear sucks just as much as proto gear alone, so no exploits.
But back when PVP existed, costumes could only be worn in Ultimate PVP, which was 5k crowns to enter.

Hear hear, even though I probably wouldn't want to use one, a proto bomb should be allowed because its proto gear anyway. It's not the bombs fault the game starts you out with two of the three possible paths, that's just biased >:/
My chest hair bristles at the thought.
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!
I didn't think many bomb users would be interested in PvP, since the bombs will be doing meh damage and you can't shield while preparing it.
We can reconsider if the demand for bombing rises!
ok... people. this is how PVP was. maybe it'd give you ideas on your manly tournament.
All PVPs had 4-8 players. A countdown happened when 4 players had entered and it would automatically start without the countdown ending once 8 players entered.
there were 4 tiers: tiers 1,2, and 3, and ultimate.
Tier 1 used tier 1 gear. That is 0 star to 1 star. It took 100 crown to enter this and no energy at all
Tier 2 used tier 2 gear. Anything 3 star and below was allowed. This costed 200 crown
Tier 3 used any level of gear. This costed 300 crown.
These three had a no costume restriction. You were stripped off of your costume during the battle
Then there was Ultimate. Costing 5k crown, you were allowed any star level of equipments and costumes.
The maps were simple. a huge square map with two lines of regenerating breakable blocks bisecting each axis, separating the map into four sections. in each quadrant, there were four squares of regenerating breakable blocks, and in the middle of those, a regenerating vial. There was a similar square as well in the center of the stage.
The battles were held on a certain amount of time. 20 minutes I believe. Each kill gave you points and you were revived after every death. Thus it resembled Super Smash Brothers.
Every week, a tally of wins was recorded and the top 10 from each tier was listed down for everyone to see, together with their number of wins. The top 1 player of the week for each tier had been rewarded a PVP crown, a costume only item that would expire after a week, when the new champions were decided.
I'll join!
Been looking for a battle with other players that is purely about skill!
I would be totally into this, as laid out in the first post.
But I also agree with Tumble. While banning different armours makes sense, if everyone was in proto gear I think it would be fair to allow different weapons, (divided by tier of course.) There's only a couple of really overpowered weapons, like DA and Antigua, that would maybe warrant disallowing.
Belated reply. Oh wells. If this ever gets sorted, I want to be involved. Montpellier is my IGN.
+1 for Jesse Perring reference.
A manly man competition?
Where are the ponies.
Not that I'm calling you sexist or anything, but I'm pretty sure that there are female players and calling it a MANLY MAN TOURNAMENT might discourage them or enrage them. I could be wrong they might just not care, I just wanted to point that out.
There will probably be some girl who enters the tournament and slaughters every, so called, manly man.
I like the idea of proto only equipment.
Though I say there be costumes, Im pretty sure the whole point of them is just for cosmetics and they wont add a bonus or anything.
Anyway, yeah, Im in >:]
This sounds... boring.
Hit someone with a sword, not one bar of damage happens. Sadface for a minute. Repeat.
