I Love The New Expansion Mission

OOO, even though I haven't bought it yet (I plan to), I've heard amazing things about the new mission. I was particularly impressed with the new gear. Finally, gunners are getting some recognition. It's better than most of the current F2P gear! It seems you've finally delivered that new content I was always waiting for. I'm actually very excited to get right in on the action with all of my friends that also bought the new mission. Two thumbs up to you OOO!

Sike.

This is the nail in the coffin for me. I've lost respect for so many people that were complaining about the new mission, then turned right around and bought it. Nice job supporting their new business model even though you say you're against it. I guess you can expect the next batch of content that will probably be another buy-able expansion mission. But you know, I can't blame people for wanting to try the new content, I blame the company behind this game for literally changing their business model in the blink of an eye and leaving F2P players in the dust. It's so messed up feeding off of people that love the game like this. I've lost the last inkling of respect I may have had for OOO.

I'll be playing Lockdown until Tera comes out. Anyone else that hates this new change as much as me should check it out. If OOO decides to make it purchasable with CE when I'm gone, send me a tell on Steam.

Personally, I am indeed

Personally, I am indeed against this business model that they're doing. It's not fair that there is now game content (and equipment, mind you) that is completely unavailable to F2P players. One of the main things that hooked me into this games was how even the free players had the same shot as everyone else to be great. With this expansion mission, this is no longer so.

However,

I've grown to like this game too much to NOT want to buy this expansion mission. Not just to play it and acquire the (seemingly) awesome weapons promised upon completion, but to support the developers who work so hard to do what they do.

The first thing that I thought of when I heard about new weapons was, "I can't wait to get a new gun!" A new bomb and sword are cool, but not for me. As a pure gunner I can't tell you how disappointed I was to see that when they promised some gun balancing all we got were tweaks to the antigua line.

I will be sticking to my guns when it comes to not purchasing the expansion pack with real money (no pun intended). When the Steam trading comes into effect I may get it then, but I'm still not sure how exactly it works. I would happily buy the CE necessary to unlock the expansion pack, but as I said in a post on another thread, it is mostly the principle that bothers me. I have wantonly spent money here and there to purchase the CE specials, but not for missions that should be an unlockable part of the game, but a buyable part of the game.

P.S. I will check out this Tera, hopefully it is good.

:(

Expansion Missions would be fine if they were extra little missions that had nothing to do with the story, in addition to the rewards being small collectors items. Expansion content that holds a new boss, story advancement and weapons that are inaccessible to F2P? Ugh.

I'm afraid that OOO won't take their time with F2P updates any more, making the Expansions significantly better than what the F2P players get, as well as the rewards being x10 better. :(

Haha, we must think a like 'cause our thoughts about this silly update sound the same.

This is what I posted in this thread: http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/45284
"I'd be fine with the Expansion Packs costing money if it was just a group of silly levels, but the Crimson Order? Ugh.
With all the plot build up about Gremlins and the mysterious Crimson Order, the cost of money feels like OOO gave me a ladder to climb only to punch my F2P face back down.

About 7:00 in the mentioned video in Blitzwingoo's post is pretty applicable to what's happening with Spiral Knights now.
OOO is splitting the P2P and F2P crowd apart, setting a "fun zone" where only certain people can go.
And like the video said, "you should never ever ever split your community"."

Oh, and here's the video I was talking about if you want to watch it.

Yeah I'm so excited there is

Yeah I'm so excited there is new content finally... And maybe I'll get to see it in a screenshot. XD

If it's any good I might pay for it, but it still doesn't sound like paying 4 dollars a new mission is something I care to do. I like my F2P games as free with the optional flair for paying customers. Was thinking they were moving in the right direction with accessories. The aesthetic items are what brings in the dollars for many of the successful F2P games. *Shrugs*

I suppose I'll wait and see if there are any changes, or there is compelling reason to pay a few bucks for just one boss. In the meanwhile I might start playing Dragon's Nest again. Maybe even revisit Vindictus. Not really out of spite or anything like that. There just isn't anything for me to do besides maybe Lockdown, which I find a bit too redundant and flawed in terms of team making and ratings. Can't make custom teams, and your rating is strictly accumulative, so how much you play has perhaps the most significant weight to it. I suppose if that was in there still wouldn't even be any interesting rewards to make it interesting to be competitive.

I'm not surprised though that there are many forumers who were strongly vocal, or even threatened boycotting, turned around and bought it anyway. That's typical, but I don't think they're enough to actually sway any business decisions. It's not really a secret that game companies don't really use their forums to make design and business decisions. At best it might alert them to some bugs or functional problems. It's just a place for players to intercommunicate when they're not in the game.

It would be bad honestly if they really listened to every "OMG Make eye rocket lazer nuclear mega beams!" threads.

The only way they can really know if something works is by trying it out. So, we'll see how the core of the game reacts, and if they see value in the outcome. If they actually do make the mistake of chasing a short term profit goal at the expense of their player base, that might be something they can't walk back.

Will be interesting to see how this goes forward. If the premium content is going to be p2p from here on, then this is just really a p2p game, with some free trial content there for people to play around with. Would be best to bow out if that is that ends up being their goals.

I suppose I'll be disappointed, because I think it's a good f2p game. I personally (just my opinion ^_^) don't think there is even a fraction of enough content, or features to make this a game into something that commands upfront payments. There is even a lot of polish missing as well.

At any rate. It is what it is. If that's their direction, then the players will decide if they want to follow along with it or not. I don't really have any stake in the success of this game. It's just something to play when I'm bored.

I really don't get why

I really don't get why everyone is throwing such a hissy fit over this new mission. Really. People act like paying four dollars for something is the end of the world.

And before people go "Because you can't pay for it with CE!"... yes, you can. Just buy it off someone else with, you know, the steam trading system? The one that spiral knights is a part of? Sheesh. (Now, complaining about getting gouged CE-wise for the cost of it from the people who will trade it, THAT I can understand, because some of them are asking prices that are just silly.)

Although I have to admit, it would be nice to see some new content that isn't along the lines of shadow lairs, costing what... 1800ce a pop? I haven't done them because I don't agree with the pay-every-time costs. I would say that missions count, but honestly it's not anything NEW, it's just a new format of old content. We need some new bosses and gear that don't require a large upfront payment, OOO.

For the tl;dr people: The new mission is fun, you can get it 'free' in a roundabout way with CE and trading, but it would be nice to see new content we don't have to pay for too.

Buying it off someone else

Buying it off someone else means you have to find someone who will buy it for you. That's an unnecessary hassle for F2P. The arguments have already been stated in the thread that has 250+ replies. You'll find the answer as to why people hate it there. All the marketing scheme updates followed by this is madness. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvYZRskNV3w

I'll take a look at the other

I'll take a look at the other thread, Exile. On a personal level, this expansion doesn't annoy me as much as shadow keys though, but that's just because I care about how MUCH money I'm spending, rather than what method I'm using to pay it. My thoughts were "Oh good, it stays unlocked forever instead of a single run, and you don't have to pay another 200/400/800 energy to upgrade the gear, either".

OOO could probably save themselves a lot of flak (and still keep their real-money-for-the-mission model) by allowing people to purchase a version of it on steam that gave an ingame unlock item that was tradeable. =/

I can understand getting up in arms on principle and leaving the game, but it still seems odd to jump to a subscription one in your rage.

Paying doesn't bother me.

Paying doesn't bother me. It's what OOO is doing that does. I avoid games that pull stunts like this because it's basically deceiving the player base for more profits. If it's your first ride with an MMO that does this, just watch everything play out. More P2P content will come out which will make everything up to Vanaduke basically a free trial.

Wow, that is a very

Wow, that is a very intriguing video about microtransactions - thanks for that!

Personally, I haven't seen much as I'm not much of a gamer but it all makes so much sense! Although I'm a F2P player (not that spending money is an issue but simply because I find it more rewarding), I do feel that I give back to the game in other ways with my time and maintaining a fun community/guild for other F2P/P2P players in the game which is also why a lot of people play. SK is a pretty casual game that allow people to play at their own pace (whether to grind or can choose to pay if they want) which is nice...however with the expansion, I really do feel the split in the community and the unease felt by F2P players, and in particular the non-steam users and their inability to get around obtaining the expansion with CE.

It's not really about the money, but more about having options and the ability to choose your own play style in this openly advertised Free-To-Play MMO (which means all content could be free). However what is currently being offered, it cuts off a population who are left in the dark who don't have the option to do the steam trade which is what I think some people are failing to see here.

P.S. Tera looks interesting! I wonder how it'll compare with gw2 :3

As Exileddread said, it's not the money that's the problem.
Paying 4$ isn't a big deal to me. The only reason I haven't is because like Swarleysparkles,
I find being a F2P player more rewarding. The fact that there's content unavailable isn't even the
main thing I'm upset about. As I've said before, it's the fact that this P2P content is related to the
whole SK story. And by staying F2P, I miss out on some of the story of this game.

@Swarleysparkles....or anyone else:

Yes, once more, I can understand standing up on principle and such, but hopping to a subscription based game? If anything, they're far more insidious.

I know the issue isn't on how much it costs. My own personal issue isn't with the price, but how I cannot, in good faith, tell people that the game isn't 100% F2P anymore. That there are no pay barriers. You *need* to pay, or dick around with Steam trading. I'm disappointed by that.

Should have had the option to but the thing for 3-4k CE, *or* $6. Sure, the CE is a ripoff, but it'd give non-steam and kong players the ability to access it and further sink CE out of the economy. With presumably F2P players using that sink the greatest, they'd be offsetting their cost to the game by further stimulating the CE market. It would also help keep CE prices up, which helps OOO (higher prices = more reason to buy CE).

I actually prefer

I actually prefer subscription based games to most of the F2P games I've been a part of. The only reason I left WoW/Darkfall/Everquest is because something new would come out and spark my attention, so I'd give it a try. Many of my friends also went inactive in those games, but I must say that my overall gaming experience has been much better there than in F2P games like SK that seem to change their business models on a whim. I've played so many other MMOs that I just can't help myself from taking into account company actions and the impression they have on their consumers.

I'm just hoping that they make it tradeable with CE in the client. This would make everyone happy.
