So, I finally saw one of my guildies wearing the Mask of Seerus. The thing had seemed darn familiar, but it wasn't until I bumped into a player wearing it that I finally made the connection. There's a similar mask (worn by a similar critter!) that gets a lot of screentime in the animated film Oblivion Island.
I couldn't ignore it after that-- it's one of those "once you see it, you can't unsee it" things.
Just a fluke? Of course it is. Just like the flower-carrying Iron Golems in Minecraft. :>
I don't think it is, though his mask keeps making me think of a plague doctor :B
The 1* mask looks like Cherub's mask, it's pretty cool.
The 5* one...hmm, I see a bit of a resemblance in that they're both white with red markings, and has a beak thingy protruding out.
Oh wow, that does look quite similar. :o I'll have to check that movie out too.
Also, don't know about you all, but when I first saw the mask, I was like, " EIGHT AND A HALF TAILS!"
More than likely it was influenced by the baddies that originated with Super Mario Brothers 2 and it's subsequent remakes.

I don't think it's just a coincidence that King Krogmo is reminiscent of Wart from Super Mario 2 either.

Because that mask in that movie as well as the Seerus mask is based on Japanese traditional masks, particuarly the Kitsune. They are used in stage or theatrical plays depicting prehistoric myths, supernatural beings, etc. Just Google kitsune mask and you'll see some.
The moment I saw the image for the expansion I thought, "wait a minute, what is Ninetails doing in this game?"
I'm not sure why Three Rings decided that Seerus would look good in that, but I have to admit they were right. The sooner I can get one of those masks the better.
The mask reminded me heavily of this guy.
But the kitsune mask is probably more accurate since gremlins are human-y animal creatures (even though they're more like rabbits and not foxes).
I was reminded vaguely of the mask seen in Saw, but only vaguely.

Tengu! That's the word I'm looking for! Seemed to have forgotten, I have recently played SMT: Strange Journey and used a lot of Koppa Tengus to fuse with.
