Do we really want the new gear?

I recently obtained a copy of the new dlc, Crimson Hammer. After going on a run with some friends and guildmates, I finally obtained the two weapons from the tier 3 version of the mission: The

5* Warmaster Rocket Hammer
and the
5* Dark Retribution

When I first got them, I thought "wow, these weapons are amazing!" Then I realized that they (actually, just the rocket-on-a-stick) were a little too amazing. The Warmaster Rocket Hammer has a 3 attack combo: an initial swipe, a damage dealing dash approximately the range of a flourish charge, and a SS-esque second hit. However, due to the power of the dash, I can use it to take out gun puppies in one combo, and lumbers in just a bit more than one combo. Not only does this sword have extremely high dps against everything neutral and weak to elemental damage, the dash usually carried me out of a monster's range, so that I rarely got hit while spamming it. The user-unfriendliness of the SS line's second strike has always been a shortcoming, and the Warmaster Rocket Hammer completely negates that problem.

To give you an idea about my experience testing this weapon out in the Royal Jelly Palace, here's an approximate record of what happened.
Monsters spawn (2 gun puppies, 2 lumbers, 4 jellies, 2 silkwings)
I run behind the gun puppy and use one combo. Gun puppy down.
I spam right click at the jellies. Two jellies die in about 3 seconds.
I run around the lumbers, and spam at them. Both die in about 6 seconds total.
I snipe the other gun puppy with one combo.
I spam right click once again, and the other 2 jellies die.

An usually challenging battle is ended in no more than 15 seconds, with no damage on my part. All I had to do was spam this weapon, and everything simply died.

This weapon takes little skill to use effectively, and is just too good. For pure damage, I seriously doubt any elemental weapon in the game can come close to this sword. I seriously think that this weapon should be nerfed, as it is a straight upgrade to the brandish/DA line in nearly all situations.

I see this sword becoming the new swordsman's favorite and in particular, and a powerful alternative to the flourish in lockdown. However, the Rocket Hammer is simply too overpowered in it's current state. With it in my arsenal and the propagation of arsenal stations, I don't even see the purpose of getting weapon slot upgrades anymore. In fact, with this and the flourish, I can sweep through every single floor in the game without much conscious input.

Not only is this sword overpowered, it is only available through buying/trading from somebody who bought the dlc. This to me signals the change of Spiral Knights into a "pay to win" game, where the players who spend money will utterly destroy the f2p players, in this case with a huge Rocket "hammer." As fun as the dlc may be, this decision on OOO's part seems flawed, and I believe at least one of two things should happen: either the Rocket Hammer be nerfed, or the dlc made available without direct purchases.

I do agree about the

I do agree about the ominousness of unique gear that is (so far) only obtainable though paying real cash.

As t the hamma itself, perhaps either slowing the attack speed down or decreasing its maximum damage would work.

I'd hesitate to jump to the usual knee jerk reactions and instead wait a while before declaring things broken. After the heavy swords were "overpowered" in Lockdown until rapiers caught on, which previous weren't considered anything of the sort. Heck I remember when Peacemaker was more popular than Blitz Needle.

There's no doubt the Rocket Hammer is powerful, but I doubt it'll eclipse pre-existing swords in much the same way the Brandish buffs didn't make the DA obsolete. As for DR, it's basically what bombers have always needed and although I do think it brings up some balance issues in comparison to other bombs on the whole I think it's more that other bombs are underpowered.

I'm going to leave off how we can only obtain the items via the DLC itself and focus on my opinions of the items.

Out of the 3 new family of items, I think that the best one would be the bomb. Bombers can now do damage (AoA and VT do damage as well, but very little) to all monster classes without annoying teammates with the Nitro flash + fling, which is great. DBB + DR means that full bombers can now choose to be fully offensive instead of being stuck as support in levels like constructs. A shadow bomb's been requested for a long time as well.

The sword...hmm, it seems to be a bit overpowered at first glance, but after I used it a couple of times, I think that it's actually not too bad in terms of balance. Sure, it's the only pure ele sword in the game, but using it in places like FSC where there's cramped spaces, tons of mobs, and spikes everywhere would take a great amount of skill. That dash can land you in some very hot water if you don't aim well or if you lag and go just a bit off course. Sure, you can shield cancel, but then it's not doing that much damage than a DA. The charge on the hammer is fun, but I'd still take my DA over it in a pinch. Overall, I think it's a sword that's very unique in its usage, and that it takes skill to use it well--kind of like Blitz charges. If you can do well, you can one shot many mobs, but if you don't use it well, then you're leaving yourself wide open for attacks.

The hat--well, gunners do need some love! The hat is pretty damn awesome for FSC (shock and fire, if I'm remember this right), and not just for gunners either. I don't have much to say about it since I don't gunsling much, but I don't think it's too overpowered or anything.
