Should I switch to a troika line for more range and knockback or should I keep my explosion-spamming brandish line?

Sealed sword line over troika
Take it from someone who has all the heavy swords and uniquely uses them, DA and GF are far superior to sudaruska and grintovec in every way possible... charge attack, damage, looks, general awesomeness
Or use bombs :P

Heavy can hit more mobs, but leaves you more vulnerable due to slow speed. Personally, i think brandish is better cuz you can charge, hit, and retreat very quickly

Both are fine, with brandishes, you spam the charge and continue kiting, with da/gf, you drop the first hit of the combo into the mob, run and repeat. With smaller mobs though, feel free to use the full combo of both swords if you're sure you can get away with it.
Like others said, you might be able to consider getting da/gf instead of the troika line.

I've seen videos of people
I've seen videos of people with heavy swords that are using the 1-hit method that you mentioned and getting away without getting hit in cramped areas (surrounded by traps) I always get hit when I'm fighting in these cramped spots using the brandish charge attack and kiting, so is it easier to use a heavy sword or am I just not skilled enough?

I'm assuming that the above poster has never used and maybe even ever seen a heavy sword. These people believe that heavy sword deal less dps and leave you vulnerable, and are WRONG in both accounts. Using a heavy sword badly causes this but using one well gets higher damage and prevents you from taking much damage at all.
At the end of the day it is a matter of preference, if you want to try out heavy swords without much investment (which I would advise) buy a troika off the AH. Don't upgrade it past 3* though because that line is hopeless when compared to DA and GF. The reason for a troika instead of sealed sword is that its dirt cheap to try.
Also, don't give up on them straight away, when I first got my sealed sword I hated it, now I carry a GF and DA on (almost) every level and would never use a 3-swing (except FoV for its charge) and can solo most levels without geting hit (much :P ).

yeh...
When sudaruska came out i got one right away.... then afterwoods realised that not only did it do less damage against everything than my other heavy swords but the charge attack is useless and the stun effect barely ever activates.... For a long term heavy sword always stick to the sealed sword lines :)
One more point about heavy sword use... never ever use auto-target with it. You'll begin to see why when/if you start using one :)

I'm trying not to get a sealed sword because it's quite boring since everyone uses it, so I'm going to try out the troika and stick with my brandish for now.

Get better at kitting
Sounds like the answer may be that you need to work on your kitting skills. If you have gotten backed into a corner with no way out, then you made a mistake somewhere.
Brandishes and Sealed swords both are great for crowd control. To really see the crowd control power of Brandishes you need CTR Max though (or at least better then stock) where as Sealed swords first hit works great for crowds (especially since most people have ASI VH from Vog).
I typically run FSC with either
Voltedge: CTR Max, DMG Max, ASI Med
or
Combuster: CTR Ultra, DMG Max, ASI VH
I have also ran FSC with
DA: CTR VH, DMG VH, ASI VH
DA: CTR VH, DMG Max, ASI Med
DA: CTR VH, DMG Med, ASI Max
DA: CTR Med, DMG VH, ASI Max
I personally feel like I can mow down those skellys waaay faster with Brandishes than my DA. Keywords here are "I" and "personal" though as the choice between a 3 swinger & a 2 swinger really comes down to preference.
The Troika lines need a buff & I don't think is going to happen anytime soon (they just fairly recently "fixed" them so maybe never).

FoV Spin attack. Throws all of them off of you and sets them all on fire. Insane attack but a ton of fun.
Since you haven't answered the question (what types of monsters are you having problems with) the answer (heavy swords) may not be the correct one. My preferred method is Voltaic Tempest to slow mobs down a tiny bit, and Brandish or Barbarous Thorn Blade. If I'm feeling bomby, I pull out the Spine Cone or the Dark Retribution.

Random-Thing is right, DA and GF outclass the troika (doesn't mean it's a bad weapon)
just don't take a gran faust into a graveyard or divine avenger into a wolver den and you'll be fine :D (also having ASI on these thing trough uv or trinkets is a huge help) and the DA charge also pushes hordes away if you want haha (won't try it with the faust tough or you need to be sure you don't have to attack for 40 seconds haha)

The first hit of sudaruska is slightly (but un-noticably) stronger that DA/GF on neutral targets, but the second hit is noticably weaker resulting in a higher damage output from sealed sword line even against neutrals (and obviouly a lot higher against enemies weak to them).
Despite Sudaruska and Triglav looking bigger they actually have the same range and knockback... Just worse damage and charge attacks. I tested this when the new heavy swords first came out :(

I tried out the Troika and I liked it. It's much easier to use than a brandish - I can even go solo with it. I want to upgrade it into a Triglav.

What loadout(s) do you currently use?
Troika vs Brandish depends on the target (& which Brandish), but mostly Brandish is waaaay more powerful (in a make it dead faster kind of way, not necessarily in a single hit damage kind of way). Though you will need to cover all three damage types: Elemental, Shadow, & Piercing.
