I usually for the most part use my wise owlite shield pretty much all the time.i have a swiftstrike buckler that i occasionally use.And i was considering getting a plate shield and upgrading.Any opinions on either of the 5 star alchemy lines?any advice on them would be greatly appreciated.

People run with the VPS
People run with the VPS because it has fire resistance. Vana's damage is all normal, so the shield is useful for tanking that mace.
I know I can take a direct mace hit, then get tackled by a slag guard right after, and still have my shield barely up.
That being said, I haven't used mine in ages since moving to a swiftstrike for fsc, but I may be getting ahead of myself.
It used to be more relevant when a) more mobs did normal damage, such as gremlin, and b) there were no arsenal stations at the beginning of each level. But now that you can swap out your shield for each non-boss run depth, you can always find a better, more specific shield to use.
If you only have an owlite & swiftstrike, I would get a bristling buckler next for the pierce defense and sword bonus. There are many levels where you are only dealing with pierce damage. For the shadow shield, you can wait until you start doing fsc and get the tokens for the blackened crest, which is 4*. However, if you find devilites and other shadow damage mobs a nuisance, you could start investing in a shadow shield next.

so vps is normal but relatively good for vana while the ironmight plate shield is a good piercing chield?hmmm.....ill have to think.still need to get a shadow defenseive loadout.just attempted the return of ur and got destroyed on the first level and left.but thanks for the answers guys,i appreciate it!

Well, yes, the Ironmight is good vs. peircing, though the Barbarous Thorn Shield is equal in its piercing defense and has a medium sword damage bonus. Ironmight has some more normal protection and has stun resist unlike the BTS.

You guys also forgot that the Volcanic Plate also gets stun resistance as well as fire resistance. >.>
It may or may not be obvious, since the previous upgrades also have stun resistance, but it does help since the hammer smash can stun as well as burn.

Shields to suit you
You should choose a shield to suit how you play. I am a very offensive swordsman, so I take bristling buckler. If you take many hits, take volcanic plate. If you take only damage from beasts or slime, take ironmight.
Take a shield that would help you in what happens.
You already have an elemental shield, so volcanic plate would be unnecessary. The ironmight line would be good, since you don't have a piercing shield. The bristling buckler from snarbolax is a better alternative for piercing shields, if you use swords. However, if you don't want it, ironmight is a good piercing shield.
Edit: Well derp, I dunno what i was thinking. Yea, its full normal.
