High Tensions

Over the past months, I've noticed extremely high tensions with the community and the staff. I just realized how not right this all is. Since I joined Spiral Knights, there has always been a nice bond between the two, but of course, you have you're ignorant part of the community ruining little things for us. Such as CE complaint threads, saying it's OOO's fault. Or of course, those ridiculous suggestion threads that deal with things that will obviously not be put in. The thing is, I have lost it with some of these new players disregarding the rules of the forums and throwing personal attacks at one another(and at higher authorities).

I don't mind the player base of Spiral Knights increasing, in fact, I like that there might be a good amount of those new players supporting OOO and buying energy. I just can't understand this chaos, some of us in this community need to understand that OOO is a small team who have a lot on their plate. I'm sure these people have lives and families to attend to and don't work 24/7. As for the energy crisis, I can see how hard it is to move from tier to tier, but it's not OOO's doing. It's the community that's covered in suffocating greed, whether P2P or F2P. If you want to blame someone, blame those people.

Look, I'm just sick of this conflict. I can't bare to witness these forum brawls all over the place. There's got to be a way to solve everything.

Discuss.

If that's the case

I don't think you want to introduce more asian players. They are the best/worst post-count warriors around.

Hi Snarf

I didn't know you posted on the forums. :)
Either way, yeah I've noticed a lot of backlash from some players and I really do think in general we should get along better with OOO. But oh well, what can you do about some people :/

Internet will be Internet

I hate to be cynical, but if you look at pretty much any game's forum -- let alone MMO's like LoL or WoW or even Runescape *shudder* -- you're going to find tons of forum users who do nothing but complain and fight with anyone they can. As the SK player pool increases, this group will increase at the same proportion they always have been at. But because there will be higher numbers of them, and because they're by definition incredibly crass and loud, they can almost drown out the more reasonable majority if you look at the forums alone.

I guess it really isn't that cynical if you look at it this way: those kinds of players are not anywhere close to representing the player base as a whole. They just have a tendency to yell, "LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME."

I completely agree with what you've been saying. Lately, more "trolls" have been coming on the forums, causing some annoyance among "experienced" players. Unfortunately, with this game and many others, some players feel almost a hierarchy because of their rank or arsenal. This means that these "experienced" or "pro" (quoted because it's not always true) players will target each other at times to make themselves seem better. Along with that, with all the new updates in the last 2-3 months, people have opinions (good and bad) about what's happened. Some decide to show their feeling by raging all over the forum (see: CE RAGE THREAD). People will talk if they don't get what they want, it just matters who it is. I, personally, will not partake in any fights on the forums, although I do get some annoyed with my snarky comments (see: Stop Auto-Aim). However, when OOO lightens up on new updates for a bit, then the rage on the forums will slowly disappear. Except, if there isn't enough updates in a certain amount of time, even more rage occurs.

Cycle: New Stuff -> Rage -> Fixing of New Stuff -> Rage -> No New Stuff -> Silents A Bit -> Even More No New Stuff -> Rage
I do believe that some people could be a bit nicer on the forums, but I like to believe most people on it are good people (or I'm just being too optimistic).

I'm glad some people see

I'm glad some people see through my point of view, but don't you think there is something we can do other than sit back and watch the fire burn? These people are becoming bothersome. How about we make this thread a little thank-you note to
OOO for their hard work? I can't seem to find the original OOO love thread.

And hi Zack :)

I don't mind the ragers and

I don't mind the ragers and complainers and people who seem to hate OOO but play their game anyways. They are what makes the forums an interesting read, I always have the most fun replying to their threads and arguing with them and right now it is ridiculously boring when all we get are OOO love threads and poorly thought out conspiracy theories. In fact the general discussions section has gotten so dull and boring people have started to mistaken it for the bug reports section and started posting bugs here.

I'm not sure there is

I'm not sure there is anything we can currently do, Snarfalarkus. The fire will eventually die out. Regardless of how good a person is, it takes an unfortunately rare amount of wisdom and skill to appropriately handle these situations and put out the flames for even one "pure of heart" can unintentionally provide fuel to the fires. I suggest we leave them be instead of upsetting ourselves.
Also, there's no harm in thanking Three Rings for all their effort. I'm sure they appreciate it. Thanks Three Rings.

Actually @Windsickle

The fire may never die out. In fact as long as the base amount of players continue to grow, the amount of trolls and flamers and haters will only increase as well. Everyone online game/MMO has them and Spiral Knights is no exception. We will have to learn to deal with it, and only then may we be able to live without hate.

I myself am also grateful for the hard work 3R has put into the game. And cant wait for more content and many updates to come.

You guys are new, give it a few months of having no new updates except "Rose Regalia Reduxes" and "Operation Crimson Hammers" and you'll hate this game just as much as anyone else.

Jeeze Shoebox, you kind of pointed out the negative. I mean, during the whole wait, I was fine and patient. Then again, not many people have patience. But you don't hate the game, do you? I know you've been around a bit longer than I have.
Either way, I can see what everyone else is saying. More players = more trolls/flamers/haters. I guess there's not much we can do to stop them. But hey, we can credit and thank OOO, can't we?

Thanks OOO. :)

"some of us in this community

"some of us in this community need to understand that OOO is a small team who have a lot on their plate."

This is true, but there are some things that used to frustrate me about them. In this game, there are many items that are not balanced and such, being too powerful or not powerful enough. To name a few were Shadowsun, Chaos, Suda + Tri, Neutralizer and Biohazard explosions not benefitting from damage bonus, etc. as gear needing buffed. Gear needing nerfed is all Flourish / BTB, wolver gear, and rarely some non-swordsman things that needed a nerf.

When we were demanding these things in the past, we let it soak in, then POP out comes an update buffing Brandishes. Brandishes were already viable and not underpowered, and they were buffed. OOO could have put there time somewhere much more useful, focusing on real, necessary balancing.

Brandishes arguably needed the buff because of their charge attack not being in line with a DA charge attack and such, perhaps. Because of that, we brushed it off. Then POP out comes an update buffing 0 and 1 star weapons. This is where I got mad at them. Raging and raging and all of a sudden POP out comes better NPC graphics.......

Today though, they are currently (as of recently this week) taking the initiative into fixing and buffing the bad stuff. I am not mad at them anymore of course because I am getting my way (mainly with tweaks and fixes for guns) regardless of it being at a bad time.

So to sum this up: I am no longer mad at them because they eventually addressed (are addressing, still waiting anxiously for my Shadowsun buff) what needed to be, but I feel like I had a reason for being mad at them in the past.

A brief aside

To be honest, these forums are very tame as compared to many official game forums. They're well moderated, and people still use their brains for the most part. Sure, there are some disagreements, and I've seen some personal attacks, but its still a fairly friendly climate.

Part of human psychology is that most individuals within society only voice their opinion when they want something changed. This generally means that for in-game forums, you mostly get a lot of people with negative energy who want an outlet to complain and feel heard.

I think these forums are fairly healthy. Perhaps there was some utopia beforehand in which everyone was joyous and excited about the new game, but as Spiral Knights progresses towards being a longer-term venture, we'll have to expect some backlash from end-game players who want more out of the game they loved for so long. Unlike single player games that tell you when its time to put it down, MMOs just keep going, and sometimes people have a hard time knowing when they've explored enough of the game to move on for a while.

A unique dilemma in MMOs is that unlike console games, where you wait a year or more between discrete installments, players expect regular content updates to keep them engaged. This puts unrealistic pressure on developers to put out content, creating tension between the players and the developers.

If you're frustrated about item balance, or a lack of new content, go play something else for a while. Come back in 6 months, or a year, and see how much new content you get to explore. I guarantee it'll be a refreshing experience :) Its really is good for you. You don't have to say goodbye forever. Just take a break, do other things, and come back in a little while.

I did exactly this, and recently returned to Spiral Knights after a reasonably long absence. I personally am impressed with the amount of new content I've gotten to explore over the last few weeks.

I totally agree with the OP. And also, SK forums are pretty nice i think if you compared to other forums. But at the same time, players are not being empathetic of OOO enuff, thus these tensions occur. /sad /shrug

Either way, they still do an awesome job over at OOO. Sure, they're not perfect, but who is, right?

Exactly as Mirrorminx said. I'm out of things to say now :'( You could always go another game who has 1 or 2 updates a week, and come back again after a while. And yeah, the forums here are pretty nice compared to some of the others out there. (Gah, alliance flame wars >.<)

They do things that make

They do things that make little sense to me at times. Nerf the shadow bomb that I got from the dlc but not the hammer? Turn RSS into a full piercing bomb on the test server when everyone was screaming for full elemental? No buff for the other mass of weapons no one uses?

Tbh The shadow bomb nerf is why I don't intend to pay for any more content, felt like bait and switch. The feeling of distrust is there, I feel complaints that are maturely written out are legitimate. Because if no one ever complained about issues they are more likely to not get fixed.
