When you kill a monster, is it first come first serve with the drops? Or is there some sort of mechanics (Whoever hits it first, does the most damage, etc.)?

The lesson to be learned is...
...just fight the creatures with teamwork and tactics, instead of running for the loot the second it appears.
You can always tell when someone doesn't yet know the answer to this question when they immediately break away from a fight to grab coins. :)
Distribution of material dropped is completely random. Potions and capsules are first come, first serve. Everyone in the party gets coins and heat equally. So of someone picks up 1 crown, everyone gets 1 crown immediately.
