Yes that's correct start a new game and proceed to the game lobby you should recieve a dialogue to invite steam friends.

note that everybody online in your friendslist will get an invite to join your game... i did this ONCE and NEVER again (alltough still got the steam mask out of it haha) i had 20 people asking me what the hell spiral knights was, or saying they didn't like the game.

haha in that case you have to enable someting in options, and then just start a gate (not sure if it works with missions) and then just send it :D
5 friends who start playing will get you the steam mask costume.
You have to enable invite friends dialogue box Option in the game options menu.It will then it will appear every time you start a new game from the arcade elevator.
