A year and a quarter later, I stand by my previous post. Why did people have a problem with auto-emotes? And why do people say "lol" out loud? That defeats the point. How lazy can you be to not type the / before lol?
Smilies typed into chat may be transformed into an appropriate emote.

Because typing "lol" has a subtly different connotation from using /laugh. It also paves over intensifiers ("rofl" compared to "lol")
