Dear Devs,

Implement a system that allows up-voting and down-voting of comments in forum threads. Without this, I feel robbed of my basic internet rights that allow me to express my opinion of a person with a single click

All those in favor, reply with "up-vote." Those not in favor, say "down-vote." Users can then tally the posts and figure out how many people support this and how many think this is a bad idea! Or, more easily, said system could be in place and the tally would be automatically displayed at the bottom of this post. This would decrease posts that convey only assent or dissent and increase the amount of useful user interaction.

Thank you,
Raddagast

Up-vote. It would be nice to have a way to express disapproval of trolls and troll-posts, without feeding said trolls. I find myself with all sorts of words to respond to some posts - but using such words just offers them legitimacy that I don't want to give. Having a down-vote function would be excellent.

GodofSkype fears the

GodofSkype fears the inevitable storm of down-voting that would attend the majority of his posts, and hopes to make himself not look as bad by spreading the blame around.

Also, it could be a help to people on the boards who lack social clue. If they see that a specific post that they've made (or that someone else has made) has a huge number of downvotes on it, that gives an opportunity to stop and think and figure out why - perhaps improving the overall quality of their posts in the future.

up voting and down voting

up voting and down voting individual posts will lead to a popularity contest and each individual's way to express themself would be lost.

I am only in favor of voting for overall threads not individual posts. Everyone has a right to their opinion whether you agree with it or not.

Not on individual posts?

Voting on individual comments does not limit freedom of speech because people would still be able to post as they wish (while obeying forum rules) regardless of the feedback given, just as you are doing now even though Sirrocco and I disagree with your prediction of how a voting system would affect the community. I'm interested in hearing what you have to say, and I'm not suggesting that we mute your voice when less people are in accord with your opinion. The system should not replace moderators and should not have a direct ability to censor a post. It would allow more people to participate in more threads, thereby increasing user feedback. It has nothing to do with laziness and everything to do with efficiency.

Threads will not become popularity contests. If many people up-vote a comment, then it gives devs and the community a better idea of what everyone likes, wants, and is thinking. I understand your concern about posting for the sake of appealing to the masses, but from my experience with such systems (reddit, leagueoflegends), it encourages intelligent posts that enrich the thread and open up new lines of thought rather than deviate or digress from the topic at hand.

Also, the idea of voting on comments isn't to bump a thread to the top of the forum or to bury a thread that is unpopular. Votes should not affect how the forum displays the thread, but it should reflect the gross community's opinion on the ideas in the thread. Individual comment voting allows for more precise feedback.

Usually what happens in such

Usually what happens in such voting systems is if it gets enough bad votes it will hide the post . Youtube does this. It's detestable, everyone has the right to have their post be seen and burying it just because you don't like it is preposterous.

Honestly I hate voting systems.

Making bad rated posts

Making bad rated posts disappear should not be a function of a comment voting system. It should be up to the mods to get rid of bad posts. I think we can agree on this point.

A better suggestion:

A better suggestion: forum-ban accounts from reddit and digg who have an inflated sense of power and feel entitled to downvote posts they disagree with in order to prevent anyone else from reading it.
