What are good UVs for a Plate Shield?

So I'm looking to buy a shield with a decent UV, that will later become my first 4* shield. Owlite shields look fugly and I don't have the means to get a Crest of Almire, so I'm thinking of getting a plate shield since their 5* variant is supposedly useful in FSC.

The question is, which UV should I get? I'm trying to plan ahead here, but there's a catch-22: I want a useful UV in FSC, but I can't try out FSC until I get a 4-star shield to find out which UV would be most useful.

So I would appreciate some advice. Should I get elemental defense against random projectiles flying around in FSC? Shadow defense against the undead/fiend monsters there? More stun or normal defense against Vanaduke's mace? More fire defense against all fire attacks FSC supposedly has?

I've already decided on my other 4* items - my first 4* weapon is a low slime UV Vile Striker that I use for soloing the Royal Jelly, and my first 4* armor and helm will be crafted from Wolver gear with a low fire UV that I just bought today.

Thanks, everyone!

Owlite looks great at 5*,

Owlite looks great at 5*, what are you smoking. And its a great shield overall. Its the only 4* shield that can take a vana mace, that I know of. It's excellent in fsc.

Get some status uv on your plate shield, if that's what you want. Uv on shields aren't the greatest, since you usually have an alternative with inbuilt resistance. The 2 most common status in fsc is fire and stun. Vps, the 5* of plate shield, has fire already. Most people can walk stun off in 2-3 seconds, so it is not dangerous.

Some shadow would be fine, although it is not necessary. In fact, I don't know why you want uv's on your shield.

As far as I know, having UVs

As far as I know, having UVs on shields helps it avoid breaking when it's hit by whatever the UV covers. So people put UVs on to defend against what usually breaks their shield.

So I guess, whatever usually breaks a Volcanic Plate Shield in FSC..

Right?

Usually, what breaks a shield

Usually, what breaks a shield is an attack that does not correspond with the shield. For example, a devilite hit on a barbarous thorn shield. A polyp spike on owlite.

That is why most people craft one shield for each type. This leaves status resistance for desired uv's. Shock, fire, and freeze are considered to be the more dangerous status. Vps has fire, shock is rare in fsc, and freeze does not exist. So your vps doesn't really need any status uv.

The only thing that should be breaking the vps in fsc is chain rushed by a trojan, then surrounded by slags. Its made to be a real sturdy shield. If you find that shadow hits are breaking it too often, chances are you should dodge more, or use a shadow shield.

Here's another catch. While wise owlite and 4* skelly are useful for fsc, a 4* plate shield is only normal defence. Boosted plate shield, if I recall correctly. So it has no fire resist. Just a vanilla normal defence + health shield. Won't be taking much hits from anything. Spending money on uv to cover its 4* phase is a waste of resources. And unless you get lucky or spend a lot of money for a max uv, you are better off learning to play with a weaker shield than to rely on uv's.

"play with a weaker shield"

"weaker shield"

May I introduce you to my best bud... (Besides my Suda) The Swiftstrike Buckler!

You may notice that many "pro's" will go around around with it in T3, and not die... Or change from a 5* to this 3* beauty. There is a reason. ASI. End of story.

Well, I'm not spending money

Well, I'm not spending money to cover the 4* UV phase, rather I'm planning ahead to already have something on 5* without having to craft up from 2* again.

So then, I guess shadow for the plate shield would make the most sense?

It's more of a compulsion to have a mildly unique variant that one can pass on, to avoid having to run around with some useless UV after upgrading the item. I'll just get a low shadow UV, thanks guys.
