People usually go with toothpicks so get either Gunslinger or Dusker. I would suggest Dusker unless you were going full gunner (which isn't the best idea). Brute Jelly and Quicksilver's bonuses aren't really worth losing the bonuses that the weapon-specific armors give.
Of course, you might want to keep a spare loadout with elemental armor, if the Hammer-users are bothering you.

Hmm...
Wonder why the Drake Scale series, which has both piercing and elemental defenses, is not used that often?
Anyway, I agree with the posters above, protect yourself against pokey sticks and rocket hammers with piercing and elemental defense respectively.

Drake scale sucks because it has no normal resistance.
Most stuff (apart from toothpicks, warhammer, guns/bombs, and some attacks in t3) will do SOME normal at least. All Brandish and Sealed lines do half normal. So people don't really use Drake, unless you're doing an Ash Tail/Rabid den or something like that in t3. And even then, it wouldn't really be my first choice of armour...

Drake scale isn't used because it would be ripped apart by a sealed sword, calibur, nightblade, spur/arc razor, either trokia, striker, and any other normal based weapon i forgot.
but ya, most used sets are Dusker, Swift flourish/twisted snarble barb, kilowatt pulsar, and either a t2 rocket hammer or a heavy sword (sealed or 3* trokia).
Since the primary weapon of choice for most strikers (read: MOST) is a toothpick, you'll want piercing def armor
Dusker
Gunslinger
Brute Jelly
Quicksilver
These all work fine, the Dusker is for more damage from swords, Gunslinger if you want to spam those guns
The jelly sets are more of defensive sets, since they have higher pierce def than dusker and gunslinger
Brute if you hate Stun, Quicksilver if you hate Shock
If you're worried about the big mean hammers, then you can use Fused Demo or Elemental
