ok... so i just did a full tier 2 run for the first time, i got 1 3* material and all the rest (the few of them that there were) were 2* or less, my single partner, however, had 6 4* mats and 5 3* mats.... am i just unlucky or is there some way to control who gets the mats?

Not quite, materials are randomly distributed to the party. Hopefully your luck will turn around. On one memorable run I was on, a mob dropped a 4* mat and two 3* mats, and all three of them when to the same player. >_<

Best thing to do for fun and
Best thing to do for fun and profit, run a tier by yourself like once a week. Then run a tier with a party the rest of the time. That way you get to party with people and just enjoy whatever you get most of the time. And then seriously collect materials only every so often.
It's either whoever picks up or a round robin distribution (as in, #1 gets one, #2 gets one, #1 gets one, #2 gets one, etc etc). Not sure which.
Either way, it's somewhat luck-based.
