So, playing a mission with some friends earlier, I timed out briefly. This happens from time to time, the internet being what it is (wireless doubly so.)
It's hard to describe what happened without telling a bit of a story with it. I'll post a screenshot later on once Steam has uploaded it.
Most simply put, I timed out briefly, and when my connection stabilized everything was stuck in place and I was able to move around (but not attack) and my party members could see where I'd gone. Everything was stuck in place for me, except chat worked in real time. Once my connection was stable I was able to move around normally from my party members' perspectives, though everything was stuck for me still. Eventually we finished the level and the game was working again once I got to haven... but it was wild ride while it happened.
-----
Experience has taught me that when I time out and there are enemies around, even though all of my teammates have run off of the map and the enemies have stopped moving, they are still invisibly chasing me on a server somewhere, and my keyboard and mouse inputs seem to make it even if what's going on isn't relayed to my monitor.
Experience has proven multiple (hilarious) times that the best solution to this problem that keeps me alive, is to run in circles and hope for the best.
Tonight when this happened in a depth 25 wolver Den for a current prestige mission, that is precisely what I did. I realized quickly when one of my teammates had run out of the map that I had timed out. I started to run in circles, hoping not to get snagged on one of the few bushes left and watched while a remaining Dark Retribution bomb spun, hoping to use its end as a cue for my connection's return to sanity.
After a few minutes the bomb was still spinning (not exaggerating, it was probably close to 5 minutes) and I was amazed that I hadn't simply disconnected yet. A few minutes more, some of the things on screen updated. Some enemies vanished and a few changed position, the bomb that was spinning was gone, and there were a few new wolvers. Several times, big yellow stars appeared on the stationary wolvers - I took this to mean that we were winning. One of my teammates was also showing up as dead in the party list though I couldn't see him and I was still effectively timed out, and running in useless circles.
Shortly after, I noticed that the chat text had updated. One of my party members had typed "lol wow" and the other had replied "Run Forrest Run!"
As I laughed, and continued to run in circles, the screen updated a little bit again. Now both of my party members had died, and though I was getting the text late, I was getting it even though the wolvers and wings hadn't updated in a while.
I kept running circles for what felt like at least 10 minutes, though it may have been half of that. Every so often, the wolvers would twitch and more new text would show up, my party members were discussing me, and were obviously confused.
They were commenting on my epic doding ability (LOL, I had no idea...) and theorizing about why I was just running in circles (one asked if I might be on the phone.)
After a few more laughs, and a few brieft pauses to type at them one word at a time and dodge the attacks that I couldn't see, I explained that I'd timed out and couldn't see where the enemies were or where they were to revive.
Shortly after, I realized that chat text was coming back in real-time even though the enemy and party positions, and the map had not updated for quite a while, nor had I lost connection. This is when the REAL strangeness started.
My party members revived using energy when they realized that even though I was effectively dodging some wolvers (I have no idea how many) and not dying, that I wasn't going to be reviving them in any known time frame.
They finished off the last enemies and told me it was all clear, and asked if the gate had opened for me. It had not, nor had the original wave of enemies disappeared. To test what was going on vs what I was seeing, I ran up against the angry looking purple gate and asked them where I was.
They assured me now that I'd walked through the gate and I asked them to direct me to the next area. Through a series of "left. down. left." directions I got to (I think) the next party button and I was led to a safe corner where I "probably" wouldn't die while they killed the last group of enemies.
Shortly after I saw all of my red and yellow cards fall out of my pockets and heard the "you are dead" whooshy noise though my character continued to stand next to the group of wolvers and wings who were chilling out near the angry door with me. The party tab assured me that I was dead and one of my party members apologized for not protecting me better.
After a short while later, the elevator icon appeared on my map, and I was told to revive.
I pressed attack and though nothing visibly changed, my icon on the party menu got a new blackjack hand of just a few cards, and I got some more simple (but effective - I only had to be told to backtrack because I'd gone too far once) directions that led me to the elevator eventually.
The Heat tally popped up and I loaded back into haven finally (and things worked and moved again.)
I'm not sure how or why my game would do quite what it did, or whether anyone else has experienced something like this, but I thought it was worth sharing.
Big thanks to Blackskies and Revpaco for being such good sports when they'd both died and I just ran in circled for five minutes, and for being so funny about it. I know lots of players would have gotten mad, and thought I was trolling them; and though there were some "interesting" theories about why I appeared to only be moving and not attacking or shielding, before I realized that I could type to them - they were good sports to the end and even revived me to led me blindly to the elevator rather than just get on and drag my corpse down on the elevator, so I got heat for the level.
I hope this long wall of text was an amusing read for those that bother, and perhaps reporting the bug is of some use to the developers.
Sort of shows the process of how I got to the elevator by running against a wall.
Also shows what I saw of the level from the point that we got to it until I got the loading screen back to haven.
