basically he is using the spiral knights to become the richest man in the clockworks

And then you go down to fight him, and if you're flat broke he uses all sorts of crazy weapon attacks. However, if you have plenty of crowns to burn he'll only have some horrible, underpowered crap weapons to attack you with.

Part of me hopes that, when
Part of me hopes that, when we do get to the core, we have a multi-phase final battle with Basil that, upon completion, causes the entire planet to implode. This would involve "defeating" Basil, at which point he remote-detonates several carefully placed explosives to cause the planet's implosion, which would result in a Chase/Timed Escape-type level where the floor is crumbling behind you while you must kill waves of enemies standing between you and our now-fleeing Basil, else you fall into the Clockworks and be consumed by it.
And of course, a climactic remix of Spiral Knight's main theme would be playing throughout this entire debacle.
It's only fitting.

You people think you can beat Basil? He has all those recipes... meaning he probably has every weapon in the game. Better still, maybe he's the one who makes recipes in the first place. You think he'd give you his real stash? The moment you try is the moment he pulls out the super nitro big angry shivermist toxic volt fiery graviton bomb with 0.0001 second charge time. Should you even last through that, he has his guns and swords ready for you...
