Hello spiral knights, I'm aero, and I have had this idea for a while, it may have been presented, but I'm still giving it a shot.
I never really minded the above the head view of spiral knights, I always thought it was unique, But after seeing all the scenery and lighting in the clockworks and the towns, I've always wondered what the sky would look like, if I were able to see it, and it lead to me giving the idea of a adjustible camera view. I was thinking you can choose from the Default above the head, or a third person style view, and possibly a third person over-the-shoulder view as well. I thought it would be interesting to see your knight up close when in action and not just standing around in your character panel, and to see the sky and such. It may not be possible, but I was hoping to give this suggestion a shot. Thanks and have fun.
I think the main issue that's been brought up in the various times this has been suggested is the fact that levels are loaded in such a way that all walls have no backs (for performance reasons). In other words, if you were able to turn the camera, you would be able to see through walls at certain angles.
Personally, I don't think there's a problem with being able to rotate the camera about the x-axis to some extent, allowing us to manually get closer to a bird's-eye view (like during RT) or a player-level view (like at the beginning of Vana's Throne Room). I guess some extra control mappings would need to be added, but that shouldn't be too tough.
As a side note, I'm fairly certain that currently the sky in Spiral Knights would usually just reflect whatever the current background's predominant color is, or just copy over the predominant pattern in the background...
