To those of you complaining about CE/energy prices...
How do you propose this game make money otherwise? There aren't enough players for a monthly subscription plan to work out, and the idea of a cash shop doesn't really work that well here. All the complaints I've read are mostly from people who want to play the game for free and be a leech. If you aren't contributing to the game, why should we take what you are saying seriously?
If you are complaining because you can't craft 5* gear without dropping money, think of it this way. The game has been out for less than a month. In most MMO's, it takes months before you can get into top tier gear. Yet, people are complaining that they can't get into it in a week. If you aren't going to drop real money, are you going to have to grind for it? Yes. If you want to play for free, get over it I say.
Note: This thread is opinion. People will obviously disagree with me, but I welcome debate and discussion.

Problem stems from most materials slowly becoming worth nothing and the cost of diving down a tier becoming more then it pays out.
I see where you are coming from and agree. The downside is...even those that pay for this game may be paying too much. I've put money into this game and it seems more worth my time to pay for a $15 sub for a much better game. At least then it would be cheaper than what this cost.
I wish they would give the option for a monthly sub that would give us more play time and unlock all weapon slots for those willing to pay a monthly fee.
But as it was said before, they would not make nearly enough money that way so better option is to not go over $15 a month on this game and just play it casually for now.
Others take the more extreme method and don't pay a cent. Which, I agree, can be a problem.
I even went out of my bridge just to say.. this is a FREE to play game.. energy must be FREE.
You know good well that isn't what it means. It just means you can log into the game for free and do SOME things in this game for free. It is a clever loop hole in advertising to suck people in.
I wish such MMOs would stop calling themselves free to play just as much as you. It is misleading but there is nothing you can do about it. Just know that because they say free, does not mean they have any obligation to make this free. Why would anyone make a game out of the goodness of their heart and pay for your time to play?

This game is truly free, no loophole. Paying gets you more play time and makes some things faster, but because of the exchange, a free player can eventually have and do everything without paying a cent.
Personally, I'm happy to pay and I think the cost is totally reasonable. An extra couple of dungeons runs on the weekend, extra weapon slots, and crafting 3-4* gear (I'm not up to 5* yet) without worrying about trading for the energy makes the game more fun for me, but I don't have to pay if I don't want to, and I can still eventually get the gear I'm making now, it'll just take longer.

@ Icee, It's free to play. I completely agree.
@zazabar, I mostly agree, with the caveat, not paying a single penny does not make you a leach...AT ALL. I haven't paid a cent, i may or may not in the future, but even if i never do it does not make me a leach. Why? I've already got my brother to play the game, and have suggested it to others. My brother has suggested it to others as well. Even if neither of us (my bro or i) pay a cent, eventually my word of mouth advertising is going to generate revenue for OOO.
I think criticizing people for not paying is as misguided as criticizing the game for not being free.
@clubsdeuce, Is that how you really feel? If this game is gonna cost money you'd rather pay to play a better game? Go for it. You know what i want to play? This game. Not because it's free, but because it's fun and it fits a very great niche. It's kinda like zelda, kinda like a an MMO (lol), kinda like an action RPG (lol), and it is its own game.
@everyone, i'm honestly surprised more people don't enjoy 'the grind' of managing Energy. It's completely novel for me to manage my energy in terms of play and in terms of a resource and in terms of a commodity. It's novel stimulation, which is the crux of videogaming (more so in the past). Novel stimulation is the reason that you still don't pay mario bros. This has become a lil less important though, in terms of better more complex video games as video games have evolved, but is still innately important in terms of entertainment. Otherwise i'd watch goodwill hunting every date night because it's a good movie.
The fact that you can't instantly get more energy is a good thing. It forces you to think how you will spend your limited energy per day. Donating a few dollars towards the game gives you some CE to work with, but ultimately the game boils down to managing the scarce resource of energy and those players who do it well are the ones who win. You can't simply buy whatever or fritter away your crowns on arbitrary purchases because of the energy system. You must think and plan, then put it down for the night and plan some more tomorrow. This is excellent game design.
Removing energy from Spiral Knights would eliminate the strategy of the game and turn it into a free-for-all grindathon where the player with the most free time wins every time.
