(i can understand the dub being bad)
good troll attempt
but yeah...no, as if they have the money to pay korean animators for every drawing
I can see a short web-series though
So you're paying for the entire production of the Spiral Knights Anime? Alright, I'll take it then.
What's that? You're not? Well I guess there won't be a Spiral Knights Anime anytime soon.
"It's a bad idea to me, must be a troll"
lol
I for one support this idea, might be interesting to see what the writers could come up with. And as long as we have that chiptuney soundtrack, I'm all aboard~ Though, the game doesn't seem to give off that "anime" vibe to me.
"Though, the game doesn't seem to give off that "anime" vibe to me."
...Huh? The whole game is based on anime-style art.
~Sev
Actually, the art style (top heavy, as Ian calls it) are based offa Nendoroids and their body proportions (big head, eyes, small body, NO FEET)
But yea, big head, big eyes, small body, no feet is a good definition :-D
Seriously?
Think for just one second about the kinds of costs that go into creating an anime.
There's time involved in making a storyboard - time that could be spent instead on trying to balance existing game content or adding new content. Sure, there's already some story element in Spiral Knights, but translating that into a serialized (episodic) form is a lot of effort.
In terms of the actual production, there's obviously money involved. If the devs don't spend money to hire people to produce the anime for them, they'll still have to spend money on all of the production equipment for themselves. We already know that Three Rings is sacrificing a big source of profit by keeping Spiral Knights free-to-play, so do you really think they have the money to put into an anime?
Then there's the issue of actually releasing the anime to the public. Who would watch it? People who play Spiral Knights, obviously. If they wanted the anime to reach a larger audience, they would need to spend money on advertising. Why would they need to reach a larger audience? In order to make up for the cost of producing an anime - the only way that Three Rings could ever even hope of making profit off of an anime is if people who watch it then decide to play Spiral Knights and pay money for it.
I'll have you all know this - my life is essentially defined by three things: school, video games, and anime. Yes, anime. I'm an avid fan. I've got several Nendoroids and other figurines sitting in my room, along with a couple of posters. I'm attending an anime convention in a week. Would I like to see a Spiral Knights Anime? That depends on its quality - if it's not good, I won't watch it, even if I already have a stake in it because I play Spiral Knights. In order for it to be a quality anime, Three Rings needs to sink a lot of money into it, and it's very impractical and naïve to believe they will.

An animated comic series? i mean, someone did it for Terraria
If someone had time to put into this, it wouldn't be very hard to make awesome. God knows it's a whole load cheaper than a fully fledged anime.
Anime is for weak artists who dare not to utilize the medium of reality.
Let's see, anime.
Hmmm, as if SK didn't already make us nerds...
I would like to see a good NON-AMINE cartoon though, like someone said, about the alpha squad.
Maybe Spiral Knights could actually look human.
And not have nubs for feet.
If they do make a show for it, though unlikely, I have thought about it a little. There can be a different character for every equipment set with a suitable shield and weapon(s), such as the people in the Hall of Heroes. There can be a Mad Bomber who uses bombs like Nitronome and Dark Briar Barrage to obliterate everything, while the Volcanic Demo uses Agni and Graviton. Their time would be better spent on the game but if they have down time and nothing to do they may as well throw together a few little clips.
As for how this would benefit the company, they could create comics for the expansion pack to promote it again. I would be fine with comics instead of a show. As long as conflicting demolitionists argue I would enjoy it.
EDIT: I have ideas for a storyline, I will be back when I get it rolling in the fan stuff section.
EDIT 2: I forgot there is no fan section. Would I post it here or Gremlin Chatter?
Anime is for weak artists who dare not to utilize the medium of reality.
So there should be a budget film full of amateur actors instead? Because OOO sure as hell can't get Brad Pitt.
Animation is a hideously expensive enterprise; I should know (I'm a freelance illustrator and have worked on a number of animation projects). For a bit of perspective, I recently completed an animation clean-up job - that's refining rough, sketchy frames where the majority of the animator's time goes, turning them into the polished final images that eventually reach the audience.
I was paid $10 per frame. For clean-up. When I was done with each sequence, they still needed forwarding on to a colourist. And the material I was working with was frequently single-character cels, not complete scenes.
Assuming the initial animator and the colourist got paid about the same I did, that makes thirty US dollars per frame of animation, which at standard TV/film refresh rate means that the project I was on cost seven hundred and twenty dollars per second of running time. Oh, plus paying the background artists, and the storyboarders, and the writers and the voice actors and the director and...
Many of the trademarks of anime - the two-frame mouths on static faces, the flat colour, heavy use of looping and static frames - were developed to keep these costs down, only becoming stylistic hallmarks when artists worked out how to work within their limitations. This sort of corner-cutting is what lead to Japan's vibrant animation scene, because a lot of content could be generated at significantly reduced cost, but it's telling that one of the most important driving forces was the effort to keep costs low.

Why anime, even? Because you like it? It's been pointed out a few times already that the game's art style isn't actually terrible anime-influenced; the body proportions are similar to Nendoroids, sure, but those proportions aren't exclusive to Nendoroids. Take away the enormous hair and SK's characters aren't that dissimilar to the proportions of a dang troll doll. SK's art style is a unique enough blend of diverse influences that an animated piece in anything much other than its extant style would be a terrible shame - and that has high potential to simply come off as watching somebody else playing the game.
That's the biggest problem, I think, and perhaps why other game-based animations have generally sucked. They either look like somebody else playing the game, or end up taking such liberties with the source material that it no longer resembles it at all. I sort of see why you'd like an SK animated series of some sort - SK does look gorgeous and I'd love to see more of it - but, well, why bother when you can already see it in action, and explore the stories yourself through playing the game?
I forgot there are subforums within sections because I was being derp.
If this thread is still here when I get a few bits in I will link it here.
EDIT: The link is here, kiddies. I am working on the second chapter as I edit this.
hmph this idea is .....AWESOME! it will cause a much better idea to advertise for instants if someone was watching the spiralknights anime and loved it they wanted to play then an advertisement of spiralknights would pop up at the end of each epn the person would make an account download it etc, and play that adds one more person to the game and this will probly go even more global of spiralknights the devs really need to see this.//_'

It all depends. I can see this game becoming a anime. I can see this game becoming a good anime. BUT, I'm concerned about longevity issues. I don't know how much story they can put in before the whole thing becomes stale. (How long will the spirals attempt to open the core before people cease to care?)
You could try to shift the anime towards personal issues (for instance, you could highlight the war between the spirals and the gremlins.) But, again there's that question of longevity. There's only so many wars you can show before the audience expects progress to be made by one side or the other...
i was intending the anime revolving around the alpha squad (before they disappeared)
Hmm, I guess you could make a miniseries about that.
Could a series be made using the game itself and just changing the camera?
I mean it's possible(i.e Arkus) and someone made an amnimation using spiral spy.....
J/K
But if you legit want a SK anime...
I think the guys responsible for Kaiba would be the best choice for people to do it. I mean LOOK AT THAT STYLE.
LOOK AT IT.
just saw the first 5 minutes of the episode and i like it
This sounds great, just make it like the people from ragnarok did. Take look at their anime. (http://www.animeultima.tv/watch/ragnarok-animation-english-subbed-dubbed...)
congratulations you just necroed one of my threads
why not create a fan base anime website and have people who love sk create random animated episodes. it could be like how dragonball z has fan base episodes.
At that point, it's no longer any business of OOO. It's up to the fans. At that point, this thread goes into the Graveyard and a new one pops up in the Treasure Vault.
And in that forum of "treasure" there are several fan created stories, one of which I should be able to resume in the following couple months. Amongst these fan stories several are somewhat decent, though most are more independent character development series where one person becomes so amazing and what not. As usual such self-indulgence ruffles my metaphorical feathers. I know Manalicious has some stuff but I forgot what it is titled.
There are also several player made comics, this one being one of my favorites. This one is also pretty funny. I intentionally did not link one of the several comics with inappropriate language.
Costs aside, it's not completely unheard of for the developers of an MMO to make their own anime series, French developer Ankama Studios recently concluded their second season of Wakfu.
The problem here is that Ankama is a powerhouse that rakes in money through two of their MMOs and merchandise (I believe they license and/or dub Anime in France as well), so they have the capacity to do so.
The Spiral Knights dev team is 8 persons.
Here's Ankama's anime for reference:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gonxYfbaVm8
EDIT: Oh, and uh. They use Macromedia (or Adobe rather) Flash for most of their animation work.
Clarification edit:
As much as I would be interested in seeing a Spiral Knights Animation, I'd rather the Devs keep spending time and money on the game instead.
Maybe, just maybe, if SK gets a larger playerbase and somehow pulls ahead in terms of popularity and overall budget, it might be a feasable idea. But as it is, it's really too much.
Even at a possible future stage where OOO is making a decent profit and running a well-tuned and matured game, it will still be a massive undertaking.
There was a video explaining the main villain of the first series, Nox, but Ankama took it down because of copyright. Basically, Nox is only a villain because he wants to save his family from being killed by a tidal wave so he plans to go back in time to before they left him because he was going crazy with power with something which is relevant to the storyline. He does not care for what happens to anything he has to kill to absorb its life force, or "Wakfu" as they call it, because when he goes back in time all of that will be undone.
The above is referenced to in the series but only directly stated towards the end of the first season. Before then he seems to just enjoy killing everything. If you want to see it I can give you the website privately because Three Rings would probably tattle and get it shut down. Keep in mind the entire show was created to advertise the game Dofus and Wakfu, the latter having been in production since 2008 and having been released this recent February.
Blah blah Wakfu blah blah Nox blah blah tree people blah blah Dofus blah blah best villain blah blah mature jokes blah blah French show blah blah English subtitles blah blah advertisement blah blah the show makes more sense if you play either of the games.
But the above post is correct, the difference is Ankama had and has money to burn for advertisement as well as entertainment. In the original Noximillien clip I was going to link the animation seemed very similar to the earlier replied Kaiba animator. Very similar. Three Rings might be able to make a show of its own in a couple years, but as it currently stands they seem to have neither the time nor money for it. There is clearly no lack of stories to use though not all may be fit to their liking.
Last note for Wakfu; the game is essentially the opposite of Spiral Knights, relying on strategic planning and what types of attacks you use to counter what the opponent does instead of speed or coordination as in Spiral Knights. Yes, one of the classes has the ability to heal. Teamwork is substantially more important in Wakfu than in Spiral Knights but is not necessarily required depending on what kind of character you are using. I could go on for pages and pages blathering on about the game but it would be best to learn first hand if you actually want to know about it.
Three Rings drip drops updates to this game. You want an anime. Classic. What this game needs is a proper update for armor, weapons and monster classes. And maybe a functional server that located in the center of the US so American players like myself can get a decent ping. ( I haven't forgotten about our friends across the world).
I think that they should just have web comics based off real adventures of knights in the clockworks. The anime may be a bad idea though (no offense anime, manhwa, and manga lovers).
At least 20 of those already exist. In fact, we have a whole forum dedicated to stuff like that. It's called the Treasure Vault.
What heck are video comics? If Google doesn't understand them, they don't exist.
I have a SK animation in production, but it's not anime, it's quite different. I'll show you later if I do finish it.
If someone told you to use the search function they meant to read the thread and how it was discussed, not revive it.
If you wish to share your artistic productions do so here.
How did I end in such an old thread, I swear it was on page 1/2 of some forum.
I would like to see a spiral knights anime I think it would be cool but way I think the story should progress is kind what SAO (Sword Art Online) did like have large skips in time while the knights are exploring the clockworks
A problem or question I have would be how would like the animation look would they be human or midgets with glowing eyes and the armor is kinda hard to picture animated and not 3D
Maybe something like this? http://www.deviantart.com/art/Lockdown-366555557
Like a very bad idea.
