I'm in the market for a shadow sword and wondering which one I should get. I'm leaning towards the Acheron due to the self-curse of the GF. What are the advantages of a GF, and is it better or worse than Acheron?
Acheron or GF
The GF can curse even with an uncharged 2nd attack, although more rarely.
In the end it truly just comes down to whether you like regular three-swing swords or heavy two-swing swords. I like the latter for the defensive knockback/AoE damage abilities, a friend of mine just loves Brandish line charge attacks.
Gran Faust is good for offensive defense, mainly pushing back groups with damage while leaving a lighter load for your shield. Important to judge timing and range of attacks. Normal attacks very slightly better than Acheron's if lagging, mostly equal. Charge attack is good for Royal Jelly and Silkwings if not for the long charge time. Second strike has a small(like a status driver) chance of inflicting curse, regard as bonus, as unreliable.
Acheron is good for one on one hitting and chasing enemies. Higher damage per single target with more damage on shields(especially if lagging and/or two-hit-cancel combo, less so with hit-run-hit combo). Powerful charge attack, can be highly useful when lagging/going against a large number of unfamiliar enemies. Charge sends a wave of explosions knocking monsters back with each explosion, thus a long pushback with high damage.
Both swords benefit almost equally from ASI and CTR, as a personal preference, I would use GF for Slimes and Acheron for Gremlins.
I have a sword guide for people like you. See here for GF vs. Ach. I hope this helps.
Thing with faust is..
If you time your hits wrong, or you miss an inch, you best expect a nasty counter-attack from.
The charge attack is never useful. There's roughly a 50% chance you will be inflicted with a 30 second curse unless you have curse resist, which isn't a problem if you brought status-cleansers but then you have to factor the loss of room for important vials and time lost in cleansing yourself. Also the Faust charge taking 5 seconds EVEN when it is lv10 is ridiculous. Don't get me wrong though, I love my Faust.
IMO don't even bother picking up a Heavy sword if you don't have at least medium atk speed going on for you, it'll end up being more bad than good.
Against jellies, acheron makes it easy to swing twice and back off. Gran faust can't get two swings in safely, so it's really a question of two hits with acheron versus one with gran faust, at least if you're not suicidal. Acheron wins by a mile.
Against lichens, the ability to stop and shield at a moment's notice is a huge, huge deal, to the degree that a faster sword pretty much wins (well, unless it's piercing damage), even if it reduces your DPS some. Gran faust is out of the question, while acheron is at least viable.
Against gremlins, acheron is slow enough to be somewhat awkward. If gran faust can get the second swing off quicker than acheron can get the third, it might be more viable. Really, though, if you want to use a sword against gremlins, get a final flourish. In spite of the lower damage, it works a lot better than acheron, as it lets you get a full combo off (for the third hit interrupt) and then get out of the way so you don't get hit back.
But that raises the question of whether you want to use a sword against gremlins at all. If you're trapped in a tight space, you might have to. If not, then sentenza is far better against thwackers, scorchers, and demos than any sword could ever hope to be.
Curse is the best reason to use Faust (not gran, gran charges too slow). Also you don't have to charge it to cause curse ither, so it's win-win.
The bestpart of GF is the curse you can deal to others, the worst part of GF is the Curse that skrews you over when you try to curse others.
Also once I found out DA was decent in FSC, I just went for it and got an acheron.
I don't regret my acheron at all, infact it's one of my favorite items, it makes me want to get one of the other Elemental Brandishes.
If u grab a GF it's going to be much better in PvP. So it will be a PvP and a PvE sword. My experience has shown brandishes aren't so great for PvP--certainly not as good as heavy swords.
THat being said, i definitely like my Acheron better for PvE (jk primarily).

GF's will probably bug you to stop playing to go on a date, or leave you heartbroken.
get an acheron.
Gf: Advantags of a heavy sword. More damage in mobs, and it seems like it will do more dps when hitting 4 or more enemies wth each wing. Large knockback, can be used very well defensively in a tight spot. Terrible charge.
Acheron: Advantages of a 3 swing med speed sword. Higher dps when dealing with less than 3 enemies. Excellent charge, much faster when compared to gf. No status.
