Invest in a flame aura and flashy volcanic accessories, bring Vog, combustor, ash of Agni, magma driver (each with ctr vh), and take up arson as a hobby. Gets you wins and respect/fear points.

Play style and tips depend

Play style and tips depend largely upon which class you prefer to play.

uh, kill with a purpose?

Don't mindlessly kill a player that isn't trying to cap your points, or defend theirs.

Always move with a purpose.

Move with the intent to cap or defend.

The sole tip that I wish to impress into you:
This is CP, not TDM. Caps are far more important than damage. So cap points, damnit. People with a tom of damage but no caps are worthless.

Other than that, just play a zillion random LD matches. You'll eventually get better observing your enemies and stealing their techniques,

Without knowing what class you play...

1) Get a secondary sword weapon, like a DA or a GF.

2) Invest in trinkets.

3) Get a weapon slot so you can have your Flourish/DA(or GF) and a gun to boot. Best guns for a sidearm for AP/Sentenza and Trollaris (If you really wanna tick peeps off).

If Recon, go to #4, if Striker, go to #5, if Guardian, go to #6.

4) Back-cap when necessary. It can really change a game. Also, don't be interrupted by players who can't see you and are just walking around in the middle of no where on your way to back-cap. If they're capping a point or something, then yes, but if you're walking past them cloaked, don't waste your time you could be using to back-cap.

5) VROOM VROOM around the map, picking up quick caps and quick defends. EX: If you're capping point 2 with 3 teammates, and point 1 (At your base) is being back-capped by a Recon, forget getting that extra tally on the scoreboard and go save point 1. If the whole team has to respawn and re-cap 1, it gives way too much time for your opposing team. Other than that, kill Gunners as necessary (They're hard for Guardians to kill), as well as anyone else who stops your caps.

6) Learn to shield-cancel efficiently. Use your shield at appropriate times to protect or heal teammates. Guards are a support role, so you should mainly defend points that are being taken, as well as assist caps when necessary. Shield-cancelling is essential, especially for Guardians; though you should learn to "Ability-cancel" with a Striker too.

Um...

Yup.
