Gearing up - Tier 2
I'm still pretty new though I've broken into Tier 2 and I am noticing that the enemies are actually challenging occasionally. I was wondering if people could offer suggestions of which items or stats I should be aiming for on 2* and 3* equipment as I'm decending since I think I need some better gear and want some idea of what to work towards.
The main items I'm not sure which to go with are Armor, Helm and Shield since the wiki isn't really clear on how the defensive stats work.
Currently I'm decked out with the following:
Sword: Calibur (also have a Cutter)
Gun: Autogun
Helm: Cobalt Helm
Shield: Owlite Shield
Armor: Skelly Suit

A bonus to using bombs will be that the demo armors standardly come with elemental defense...which most enemies use...so you're going to like that. But I don't know if you want to be a bomber so...I'll leave this for the experts.
Look at the wiki entries for the enemies you're fighting. You'll find that pretty much only lichens do piercing damage, which is why Cobalt is terrible. Anything with only normal and piercing is terrible unless it has other bonuses, like the Wolver set.
You need to have some combination of elemental resist and shadow resist, and tailor your gear for what's on the gate map. If it looks like you're only going to be facing enemies that do elemental damage you can drop shadow entirely, but if you might run into fiends or a graveyard map you should have some shadow resist. Sometimes you mess up, but that only means paying attention to what you're facing and knowing when to be careful. These resists need to be on your armor and helm (and trinkets, but meh), not your shield. Resists on your armor only work when your shield is down, and resists on your shield only work when your shield is up.
Any 2* sword should get you through it, but try to get 3*. I liked my Autogun a lot but I upgraded the first one I had to a Needle Shot, which was a mistake because the piercing damage couldn't kill turrets. I switched to a Pepperbox, which is great. Owlite Shield and Skelly Suit are fine. I recommend getting a Firebreak Helm or Magic Hood for some elemental resist. Don't get an Icebreak Helm, because you don't want to stack negative fire resist with the Skelly Suit. After that, get some elemental resist armor for when you think you can forgo shadow resist.
Hello Dreampod,
This is by no means the only viable path. It's very cookie cutter, albeit effective. Many sword users go:
Armor: Wolver/Dusker Suit
Helm: Wolver/Dusker Cap
Sword: Cutter/Striker/Vile Striker (good for Jelly King due to poision); Bandish/Cautery Sword (also good for Jelly King); calibur series
Gun: Antigua (allows for one of 2 shadow dmg guns), any alchemers, etc.
Shield: Swiftstrike Buckler, Owlite (elemental, fire, shock), Defender (good for Jellies and piercing) paths
This has gotten me through much of tier 2, but Arenas can be difficult due to a lack of resists. Jelly King poses no problems.
Guns are bombs can be useful if you enjoy them, but swords tends to be quicker and more efficient. With that in mind, it is extremely amusing to watch 4 knights unload their clips on a single lumber and drop him in 2 seconds.
I suggest blast bomb/bombs in general.
From my experience bombs allow you to stay alive longer. Provide excellent crowd control/kiting for solo or party play. And they allow you to serve a useful function in parties, even when you are under geared.
With standard 2star cobalt armor/helm and defender shield. Using 3 star master blaster bomb, i was able to carry my brother and me all the way to the slime king (lost to him), when my bro was equiped to 2 star fire sword, and all the armor the game equips you with at the start.
On a side note: i could have done it with a 2 star blaster bomb, it would have just taken longer.
