Well if you are weighing Snarbolax vs 3 Arenas, the Arenas are the clear winner.
Snarby runs are about 1.5 Arenas worth of crowns (I think). You also get tokens, which can be used for some REALLY nice early gear, or simply sold to a Vendor for 750 easy crowns. Conversely, I believe Arenas are generally denser with enemies, giving you more crowns and heat per energy spent (yet this is countered by not being able to teleport straight to an Arena, unlike the Snarbolax mission).
In a less foggy way: Snarbolax, unless you are going through multiple Arenas per run.

Then again, T3 ones (should) give a good payout.

Bosses are always reasonably
Bosses are always reasonably profitable, more so because you can sell the rewards like Traevelliath said.
With regard to arenas, you may want to focus more on the ones in the second Stratum of each Tier since those are significantly more profitable than those in the first Stratum.
Also, Treasure Vaults are never as good as Graveyards (if you didn't pick up on Pwnasoar's sarcasm), so if you get a Grave instead of a TV, be happy! You just got a bunch of fun zombies to kill and way more Heat and Cr.

RJP and RoF are pretty
RJP and RoF are pretty popular. You don't really need to worry about grinding as t1 now because they give you t2 gear in missions.Just keep doing those missions.

Rise or Fall, in the 5-2
Rise or Fall, in the 5-2 missions. It's 3 levels, first a beast level (with slime turrets), then a slime level, then a slime arena.

Rise or Fall is 30 energy for about 3k, better than jelly king IMO, as the boss itself its hard to solo at lower lvs, and if you can easily solo JK mission you can alredy do better missions

I hear some people just do the first 2 levels of the RJP levels, which is not too hard, but I'm not sure how the payout/energy compares.
If you want to do clockworks, I usually just pay to skip to tier 2, go to Moorcroft to check for any good recipes, making sure to first see if there are good levels after Moorcroft in that gate. If you are still using mostly 2/3* gear, this is pretty easy to do, and you can stop at Moorcroft if you do not feel confident playing the harder levels after it. You could also eventually use a 2* alt account (if you buy a little CE for your main account) to do tier 2 runs or RoF, and not have to pay any CE for equipping your alt.
You know, I don't remember any missions with arenas in the missions before IMF, besides RoF. Anyone know if any of the other 3* levels have arenas?

Do the snarbolax mission, but
Max Crowns/energy:
Do the snarbolax mission, but skip the boss unless you need the tokens.
This will max the amount of crowns you earn until you have 3 star gear (then you can do the royal jelly mission).
Max Crown/hour:
Another good way to make money from mist energy (!) is crafting 3-star items and selling them on the auction house. To do this you need to buy 100 crystal energy first (~6.7k crown). This gives you the most crown per hour from mist energy.

Snarbolax missions:
2levels= 2k cr
3levels= 2.5k cr+3/4tokens
10levels= 10k cr/100 ME
Tested by me, numbers are accurate.
Royal Jelly is pretty popular.
