I've been playing Spiral Knights for about a month now, so I have a little (but still not much) experience. I keep on doing stupid and embarrassing things (e.g buying a punch gun for 2.2k, trying to kill summoned mecha knights etc.), stuffing up my characters one by one. And every time I stuffed up one character, I deleted it and created a new character. This process of deleting and re-creating new knights would go on and on each time I received a '-_-', a 'wtf r u doin man?!' or a 'whatanoob' from various people. In the past 10 mins I've just deleted three characters and created a new one (this one), and completed the tutorial. So basically I'm still in proto gear, but I don't want to make the same mistakes I've done before, so could anyone give me some advice on good weapons/gear? Here's some information about me:

Type of player: Mainly swordsperson, sometimes uses guns but rarely bombs (I like them but I suck at using them)
Preferred weapon loadout: Balanced (One weapon for every damage type, one set of defenses for every damage type)
Likes/Dislikes: Dislike slow swords, prefers normal speed over fast (although fast is ok), dislikes swords that can cause damage to myself/other people (e.g Faust)
Considering to buy: Brandish lines, Flourish lines, Magic lines, Owlite lines, Jelly lines, Skelly lines, Wolver lines, Calibur lines (I prefer other Brandish over Calibur since it deals elemental damage, but Calibur's ok), Spur lines (I heard it sucks and I know it doesn't upgrade to 5*, but I'm not sure), Cutter lines, Chroma lines (it looks cool xD), Autogun lines, Alchemer lines, Pulsar line, Antigua lines

So, any ideas? I'm determined to NOT stuff up my character again so any help would be greatly appreciated. :)
Btw I'm not sure about which bombs are good for a swordsperson's sidearm, but like I said above I suck at using them and would prefer to use guns instead.

- whatever people say, you

- whatever people say, you shouldn't delete your knight and start over. By doing that you loose all the crowns you have, instead of just keeping it to buy the next good item you should have. Also, there will always be people telling you you did/buy something wrong, when in fact you did/buy the right thing (example : some dumb guys who do only FSC sincerly think elemental weapon > all, even for beasts/gremlins, and will tell you you are wrong for using a piercing sword ... which is not the case of course)

- for you gear, let's start. You said you want to be mainly a swordsman. With that said, the best way is to go for Wolver armor and helm, because of the added damage. It also have piercing defenses, which is good for both Snarby and RJP, which you are going to farm a lot (the first for token gear and the second because it's one of the most profitable level). It would be a waste to go for one set of defenses for every damage type when you start. You'd better work on more weapons and reaching higher stars level, to unlock more profitable content.

- for your weapons, you said something strange : "One weapon for every damage type". That means you would use weapon slots ? I can't say I don't approve it, but it's going to be a little costly since you just started. Here are your options :

* you indeed have weapon slots. In that case, you should use 2 brandish swords : an elemental one (whichever you want, all 3 are good) and a shadow one (Nightblade path). The 3rd sword should be piercing, so either a Flourish (the no status line is the best) or a Snarble Barb (you can have it with Snarby tokens). The only difference is the charge attack. Your fourth weapon should probably be an elemental gun : either an alchemer one if you want it right away, or a pulsar or antigua line if you don't mind waiting to have the right tokens.

* you don't have weapon slots but want at least 2 non-normal swords and don't need a gun. Use 2 of the 3 swords I talked about before (choose 2 between elemental, shadow and piercing). Or better, get those 3 swords and take 2 according the monsters you are the most likely to encounter on the level you are in

* you want a gun side-arm. Choose an elemental gun (because they are the best for what swordsmen fear the most : turrets and lumbers), and then either take a piercing or shadow sword, which means you'll have no choice but to use your gun on some enemies, or take a Calibur, which you'll be able to use against anything.

- then, last but not least, for shields : the most popular shield lines are Owlite shield and Bristing Buckler. The first defends against elemental, and is great against constructs and gremlins (so especially good for Roarmulus Twins), and the second defends against piercing and also have a bonus to swords. This bonus is the reason it's popular, otherwise it's a little weaker than other piercing shields (but the bonus makes a whole lot of difference, on a game which tends toward offense). It's the shield of choice for RJP for swordsmen. I suggest you do both and change according the level you are facing. That leaves you with no shadow shield, which is the least needed. If you really feel the need of a shadow shield because of those pesky devilites (if they break your shield too often), your only choice before end-game is a Skelly shield.

Any question ?

"That leaves you with no

"That leaves you with no shadow shield, which is the least needed."
This is one statement I can't agree at all (I mostly agree with the rest of the post though)

Personally I think that Shadow shield is most important because many shadow monsters are able to do turns during attack and are difficult to dodge, thus you have to block theirs hits (Devilites, Greavers, Kats). Elemental shield comes second (except Twackers and Mecha Knights most elemental attacks are locked and easy to dodge). Piercing shield is the least important defence - attacks of Slimes and Beasts are easy to dodge.

@Merethif the thing is, T2

@Merethif the thing is, T2 boss, which you are supposed to farm, deal elemental and piercing. I won't say shadow monsters are easy (in fact, I find that devilites are the hardest normal mobs to deal with, and kats are definitely toward the top hardest too, especially T3 ones), but you can avoid them altogether to start with. If you have to do some, I would advise to not go alone anyway (even experienced players prefer to not go alone against a fiend level, particulary a shock one).

As a lot of players, I got my shadow shield late and didn't have much trouble with that. Tho it was before missions existed and I would just avoid any fiend strata.

obligatory

Dravonknight, Fradow and Merethif are giving you good advice. Definitely do not start over with new characters; just keep glomming new wealth onto a single character.

Since you are primarily a sworder, you may find my sword guide useful.

I agree - avoiding Fiendish levels is possible solution. I was one of those players who used to avoid Fiendish levels because I was told Owlite Shield is a top priority. Put my Owlite on hold and crafting Skelly up to 5* first made a huge difference for me.

Avoiding Fiendish levels reduce somewhat your game experience - redoing same level, like RJP, over and over may change your gaming from fun to grinding, and that's where any MMO ends for me. Plus I think it's easier to find a party of RJP farmers then some helpful hands for Dark City ;-)

But that's just my personal opinion.
