How do the ability/enhancement ratings work?

I read the Wiki page and it says that the maximum rating that an armor/weapon can reach is Maximum! My question is,

Does this mean that having a Helmet with Shadow Maximum, for example, equipped in partnership with a Shadow Maximum Armor is pointless because one of the items have already reached the maximum rating potential? Or do they work independent of one another?

The way I am thinking, one Maximum item is going to be enough, but I just want to know if I'm right or not.

Please respond.

Getting a Max! on something

Getting a Max! on something like shadow resist is stackable since they are on different pieces. I don't know if you can get say, max! plus another shadow uv on the same piece of armor if it would still stack, or if you can get more than one of the same type of uv on gear. Each item has its own max for each of its stats. Getting CTR for bombs from volc/mad gear plus trinkets and/or UVs would not stack on each bomb beyond maximum, but that is because the bonuses are all affecting one other item.

I hope someone else has a more clear explanation. :D

A shadow resist Unique

A shadow resist Unique Variant decreases the amount of damage you take from shadow attacks. Your helmet and armor ultimately add their defenses together to determine just how much damage you receive from attacks. A Maximum! UV is a bit misleading because its just the largest UV resist possible on that specific piece of gear (at 6 levels). If you have, say, shadow max! on one piece and shadow max! on the other, both bonuses will be used to determine how much shadow damage you receive.
