It's a bit provocative in nature...but let's just say it's an Earthbound homage.

Take a good look at the core next time you're there. Got the image in your head? Ok, good.

Your WEAPONS as you go DEEPER get HOTTER the CLOSER you descend to the CORE. In the preview event the core (now this was confirmed to not happen regardless) would OPEN as soon as you got enough minerals deposited into it.

I doubt that the Core entity turns into "that". : ) Also, "that" turned out the way he was due to some traumas and mind breaking... The Swarm, though, I can't tell, it sure looks similar to "that".

I see this game way more as a reference to Phantasy Star, from Sega itself.

Also, it's not a homage really, but it's fun to think about it that way. There are so many things in Spiral Knights one could do, still secrets to be found within the environment and within the lore! Perhaps the Core gives life to planets? Perhaps not.

All I know is, the Core really looks like a [expletive deleted]

ive never been down to the core but is it me or does the core looks like its been sealed by something or someone becouse if you look at it it looks like its been sealed maybe it holds king and the gremlis are tyring to open it and realise their king on the negative note

Good God, that means by defeating the monster in the Core and harnessing its energy, the lag will go away and we can finally enjoy the game! THAT IS AN AWESOME FINAL BOSS.

Also sorry, nope I don't get it and I don't know much about DNA splicing except for the part about MAKIN BABEEZ FEELZ GOOD and no the core does not look like that sort of thing x.x maybe Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann would have a shot with it with its mechanical masculinity but don't look at me I'm just a stubborn virulisk ahh stop it stop hitting me I'm innocent D:

The core's gate is closer to a cervix if you think the core is a goddamn uterus. And even then, it looks nothing like one. Concerning the name of Cradle, the Echo Stones say that the planet was constructed to protect it. It is the cradle of the core.

That said, you're clearly wrong and insane. Though was there ever any doubt of that? :p
