To be completely honest, I'm getting kinda tired of being a Wolver clone. I wear costumes and stuff over it, but idk, still not the same. What are some recommendations to replace the Wolvers? (pierce, elemental, and shadow)
What I think about some armor:
Pierce-
Mercurial: Nice speed bonus, and a really good shock bonus. Same piercing defense as the jelly line

Ice Queen: nice freeze and stun resistance, high pierce defense, but lower normal.

Ironmight: really high defense and stun resist. I'm kinda put off by the attack speed decrease tho.

Deadly Virulisk: looks awesome and has a nice damage boost to slimes.

Dragon: split elemental and pierce, but not much use in t2 because of split damage.

Azure Guardian: kinda just meh imo. Not really better then any of the other choices, but no negatives either.

Elemental:
Grey Feather: Kinda average to me. Nice fire and shock resist for FSC.

Volcanic Salamander: good Fire resist and a useless bonus to slimes...

Volcanic Plate: great defense and Fire resist. Again, the ASD puts me off.

Chaos: I love the medium damage and medium CTR on anything and everything. I'm not liking the negative resists and I don't want to get UVs to reverse some of the bad ones.

Dragon: see above.

Divine: cool shadow and elemental split. My issue with that is its not very useful for t2 due to split normal damage.

Shadow:
Almirian Crusader: Really expensive and no real reason to spend that much on it, more of a costume or "trophy" imo.

Fallen: good resists, but I'm not a fan of the negative damage to fiends.

Deadshot: Maybe a "gunner"set (but I like gunning anyway :P) but the Very High damage to undead is a nice bonus.

Divine: see above

Dread Skelly: nice shadow defense with good poison and freeze resist. Plus it looks straight badass.

Heavenly Iron: nice bonus to fiends and a low to everything else. However, the huge negative shock makes me think twice as I have issues dealing with shock as it is.

Feel free to voice your opinion on any of these, and please recommend ones that you like. If I missed some that you think is worth mentioning, let me know ^_^

TL;DR: What are some sets you think are good that ARN'T WOLVER LINE.

Thanks,
Ndog

what weapons do you use?

What weapons do you use? Pure sword, mix of swords and guns, mainly bombs with a gun sidearm? What? Because even the toughest armor lets through tons of damage, people tend to choose armor that gives them offensive bonuses that they want. So we would have to know offensive bonuses you want (other than Wolver's swordspeed+2 or sworddamage+2).

I like to gun and sword. But

I like to gun and sword. But for gunning, I usually just use a mix of Seerus mask and shadow sun with 2 E. Damage trinkets. Tho, I do use a mix of both when I go into FSC.

well

The armor lines that give blanket offensive bonuses (to multiple weapons) are Fallen and Chaos.

The armor lines that give sword bonuses are Skolver, Vog Cub, Snarbolax, and Heavenly Iron.

The armor lines that give handgun bonuses are Deadshot, Shadowsun, Justifier, Nameless, and Perfect Mask of Seerus.

I would focus on these. The other offensive armor lines are all monster-specific bonuses, and those seem much harder to work into an optimized loadout. Some of them don't even make sense. For example, Volcanic Salamander gives a slime bonus but protects against elemental; that's bad.

OK!

You have (I have really) come to the right place!

I know ALL about hybridizing, And I have lot'sa blanket items...

So! I'm gonna suggest three different sets based on the ratio of sword usage to gun...

80% Sword
Divine Mantle
Heavenly Iron Armor
Swiftstrike Buckler

A little bit of sword boost, and a Heck-of-a-lot of Fiend... Meaning that you're guns get a nice boost to them, but you're swords get more of a boost. It gives Full Shadow defense, to counter those nasty buggers, and half defense to Normal and Elemental, which will help soak up the odd Swipe or Puppy bullet.

Now, I put in the swifty because ASI ALWAYS helps you survive... Though, if you have problems with ping or attack prediction, go ahead and switch it out.

50% Sword and Gun
Fallen Set
Swiftstrike

This will give you ASI ultra on every single weapon you can get your hands on. And that is something special. The fiend Penalty doesn't even really matter that much, because if you have the tools to deal with them, the ASI will help you smash them, or run and gun when low on HP.

80% Gun
Deadshot Set
Swiftstrike

Guns at ASI ultra, swords at high, and undead slaying all across the board. Still better for the guns, but gives just enough with the swords to be useful.

If you ever do decide to bomb, or find a good bomb you like, definitely go for that Chaos set... Strap on a few trinkets and a swifty, and you are a BA glass cannon... just don't get hit. ;3

Also, I REALLY approve of you trying to NOT be a wolver clone... Because all that those wolvers mean to me, is that they ONLY care to optimize... and thats it... Damage only, no team work... and yet they go in teams... =.=

Not only am I famous, but I inspire Hipster...ness... Yeah.

EDIT: Oh gosh, wall of text alert~!

bizarre

"Damage only, no team work... and yet they go in teams..."

This is truly a bizarre statement. From the fact that my armor is optimized to give big bonuses to my weapons, it does not follow that I work poorly in a team.

Nonetheless, I too applaud anyone's attempt to try the less common armor sets.

What Tsubasa means

Swordsmen are arguably the least team-oriented class in Spiral Knights. You have guns for support and ranged attacks, and bombs for crowd control and utility. But swords are usually for quick, close-up elimination of single targets or small groups of enemies--which encourages a flamboyant, solo-oriented playstyle.

Speaking from experience, a party of multiple swordsmen usually end up knocking everything around in a chaotic mess.

sworder teamwork

Well, it is true that there are many solo-oriented sworders. And I'm willing to bet that a disproportionate number of the jerks in this game are sworders.

But sworders support gunners in an inverse way: In a mixed party of sworders and gunners, gunners have freedom to stand back and "support" largely because the sworders are distracting the monsters. That is, the sworders act as a front line of defense for the gunners.

Also, a party of sworders acts as a team, if the players are good enough, even if there is no official organization. For example, one sworder releases the monsters while another readies a charge attack from the front and another performs a flanking maneuver. I'm fortunate to be in parties like this every day.

I'm not really arguing with either or you. There's no way to definitely settle the argument anyway. I just bristled at what I took to be a gross over-generalization. Cheers.

Nyan nyan nyan nyan....

I definitely agree with Bopp here, it's mainly how much players take into consideration of their teammates, I've come across Polaris users that used the knockback to help the team once or twice. In terms of solo play, all weapon types are around about equally viable, since guns provide greater safety in most situations and bombs can be used to affect large amounts of enemies to make up for the lack of teammates. As a current sworder, I usually provide support DPS in a group, unless in cases with split paths such as FSC, which I sometimes solo rooms separately. Support with sworders can still be viable with easy to access knockback that can be used to herd enemies for allies, it mainly depends on the player if he/she would provide that support.

whoa...

Sorry, haven't checked ou this thread in a little while :P

Anyway, I'm not really a fan of wearing one armor to cover all when im swording. (gunning is fine because I don't get hit much anyway). I was more thinking along the lines of what armor to cover what defense. Like, i want to make a new piercing, elemental, and shadow defense armor. tho, i may use those sets that you posted (Tsu) to base the full sets I make on.

PS. can we not make my thread a big argument :3

so what was wrong with what I proposed in post #3?

"Anyway, I'm not really a fan of wearing one armor to cover all when im swording. (gunning is fine because I don't get hit much anyway). I was more thinking along the lines of what armor to cover what defense. Like, i want to make a new piercing, elemental, and shadow defense armor."

I'm not proposing that you wear one armor for all situations. In post #3, I've already told you all of your options in offensive armor (other than monster-specific ones). My point is that one should pick armor first by its offensive bonuses, and second by its damage/status protections. So a gunner does this:
* Piercing: Justifier
* Elemental: Nameless or Perfect Mask (or Chaos)
* Shadow: Shadowsun or Deadshot (or Fallen)
And a sworder does this:
* Piercing: Skolver
* Elemental: Vog Cub (or Chaos)
* Shadow: Snarbolax or Heavenly Iron (or Fallen)
And a bomber does this:
* Piercing: none
* Elemental: Volcanic Demo or Mad Bomber or Bombastic Demo or Mercurial Demo (or Chaos)
* Shadow: none (or Fallen)
Since you use swords and guns, but you're turned off of the sworder armors for some reason, get the gunner armors. Problem solved?

I have mercurial demo and to be honest, it looks awesome but doesn't make up for it in the speed bonus. they need to give it a better speed bonus to make it a worthy tradeoff for CTR, so for the time being, it not the greatest set to go for, though the shock resist is nice.
