Yo guys. Im about 2 weeks new to Spiral Knights, and have a great desire to get a Snarbolax Suit and Cap, along with the Barbarous Thorn Blade and Shield.

I know you can craft these items by upgrading the previous, less powerful gear, but that seams to be immensley expensive and im not sure what the prerequisites are for the vendors to sell the recipes for the gear.

I also am thinking of playing the auction house a bit (or trying to) and earning enough crowns from selling snarble barbs (from farming Snarbolax) and buying them outright, but that seems even more expensive than crafting them and would halt progression.

If anyone could give a noob ideas, and maybe tell me the prerequisites for the recipes of the items I mentioned above, I would greatly appreciate it.

Snarbolax armor is... incredibly expensive. It's far cheaper actually to craft it.

If you want to buy the set on the AH, you will run into some problems. Off the top of my head, these are the ones I can think of:
- Its 4000 Crystal Energy to unbind a 5* item
- Someone else would have crafted it, thus when they sell it, they want a profit that outweighs the cost of crafting
- The only 5* items that are sold on the AH tend to have Unique Variants that triple or even quadruple their cost
- The Snarby Set has an even higher cost than most 5* items, because they require a Shadow Lair run, and two Nightmare Manes, which go for around 25k crowns each

Craft the Snarbolax gear. Don't even craft it as your first 5* armor set. The Wolver Armor line is incredibly good, and is worth using throughout the game. Look up the armor on the wiki to get a full list on how to get it.

In general, it's a bad idea to try to skip ahead in this game. SK rewards skill, and skipping through tiers just hurts yourself.

BTB and BTS are Straightforward

Snarbolax helm and armor come from the Sanctuary Alchemy Machine.
That is found after the Shadow Lairs, which are for those who are very experienced (Lots of experience with Tier 3)
To try and buy one of those items is very experienced and could take very long to achieve by buying it that way.
My recommendation is to go for Vog or Skolver first, worry about Snarby later. However, if you are adamant, there are tons of ways to make money in this game. A common example is putting UVs on gear and selling.

Edit: Sniped xD

thanks guys, i guess im just gonna keep on through the wolver armor-tree... thing. I'll get a lot more experience, i think, from doing that. I think i'm still gonna play the auction house fer crowns, though.

A few last questions, though. Who sells the recipes for Dusker and Ash-Tail coats and with what prerequisites?

Just keep doing them missions

You'll find them in respective Hall of Heroes as you go through the missions. The higher the Hall of Heroes is, the better the recipes (and they'll contain older/lower recipes as well).

But the Shield and Blade recipes can't be found there, only by Basil in the clockworks.

Eesh.

Snarbolax armour is incredibly difficult to get. Leave it, oh, I don't know, until you have a ton of cash to spend and a spare set of Ash Tail.
However, the shield and sword (and bomb - only piercing bomb) are easy to get (just farm the GW for a while), BUT not recipes - look at the AH or Basil.
Basically, what Pokenuevo said.
