Is there any downsides to not using a sword?
I was thinking of equipping a gun and bomb and just use that. Would I be making a mistake?

As someone who carries three different UV 5* guns, yes, you can play without a sword. Some of what Sketchy said above is true, some isn't.
The mobs that dodge the most (wolvers and fiends) are both weak to piercing. If you have a Magnus (piercing damage) its shots travel so fast that they can't dodge the shots if your shot is accurate. If you miss you'll see them "dodge" but they can't dodge accurate shots.
Honestly, the most annoying thing for me is grass since bullets fly over it. The only way for me to hunt for hearts/coins in the small grass is to line up a perfect, max-range shot. Rather annoying, but still doable.
Anyway, if you aren't a fan of swords, play without them.
My roommate does nothing but bombs. I do nothing but guns. Both of us can solo in Tier 3 (the deepest available depths) just fine, and we're a great asset when we group with my friend who carries nothing but three swords.
So you carry three guns and your friend carries three swords... on the off-chance, does your roommate carry three bombs too? =P
No. He only carries two because he's too cheap to buy that third weapon slot. ;D
In all seriousness though, we didn't plan this, it just sort of worked out. We each gravitated to what we felt best with (roomie was playing with a broken hand so aiming while moving was hard and bombs were perfect) and each discovered on our own that it still worked.
We work well together, but we can all solo Tier 3 without any problems.
Upsides:
-If you're good with them, you almost never get hit
-Gun Puppies are a breeze with guns
-Fantastic group support because of status effects on bombs (Stun and Freeze especially)
-Makes certain levels quicker/easier (Arenas as one example)
Downsides:
-MUCH less DPS using a Gun/Bomb combo rather than Swords
-Attack speed is less for almost every bomb, and the most powerful guns usually only have a couple rounds per clip
-In T2 a lot of creatures dodge bullets/block (For example, Gremlins dodge and Mecha Knights block every time you shoot)
-Aforementioned status effects can also kill you in certain circumstances (Shock with Quicksilvers, Fire with Oilers, etc.)
-Can be hard to nail those pesky Healers that tend to stay in the middle of a group of enemies unless you have a good poison bomb that nullifies their effects
-EDIT: You can't block while reloading, so when fighting a large group of high-damaging enemies (such as Retrodes) you can die very quickly
-EDIT: Several guns require you to stay stationary while shooting (Autogun and its descendants)
-EDIT: Lowered movement speed while firing (Been awhile since I've used any gun other than Silversix, so I don't know if all of them do this)
Those are all that I can think of as of now.
