In real life soldiers use firearms, explosives, and combat knives, and soldiers of the past used swords. Even if OOO implemented new weapons they would still fit into swords, guns, or bombs.
Like what you said, a bow would just be categorized as a gun.
How else would you want to kill your enemies in active combat? Bringing a mobile death trap is a little too impractical.

Easy: Summoning things. Both small and large, though I think a "Drone" like thing would work best.
Control: When using the attack button once, you control the "summoned" thing, and make whatever command has if it has one with the shield button, pressing attack again would return control to your knight. Some of the "summoned" weapons could even have passive functions when not controlled, or even some of them would only work when at passive state.
Turrets to defend, remote mechaknights to explore, small tanks for AoE damage... think of the possibilities!
And for armor choices, some sort of "Engineer" line.

Summoning enemies, no. Creating a defensive object such such as the Mender bubble, maybe; after balancing and no healing.
I would rather have the defensive support flags from another thread, creating a buffing glyph as opposed to the blast radius of bombs; it would affect allies with no effect to enemies as allies are not directly affected by bombs (Nitronome lag). If/When I find that thread it will be linked here.

Well, other robots could provide support as you say, the bubble-shield one as you say could be provided by a weak Scuttlebot thingie that would apply it to allies by "attacking" them, maybe. Or, a robotic Mender replic that could give that with a "energy bolt" :)

Though I only covered the basic weaponry idea and three examples. Armor-wise it is simple... and if you don't like it, I doubt you like it now. xD

My suggestion was completely different from what Aumir said (although it's a cool idea). These new "weapons" would be books that the knight could hold in his hand and when attack is clicked, would do what ever it is they do (for example summoning a rain of lightning bolts that hurt and shock enemies).
Maybe this could introduce a Mana system :o It would be a small purple/blue bar glowing under your health and heat. The armor could be similar to that of the Magic set and would give something like "Mana Replenish Speed Increase" or MRSI for short

In the game, this weapon is very powerful but drains your Mana very fast. It is in fact a book that the character holds up when using!

It's not really as much "Sword, Gun, Bomb" as it is "Melee, Ranged, and Set-up"
I'm certain there's plenty of things you can put down that do things that aren't exploding like a bomb. (Think Traps).
There's plenty of weapons you can hit with face-to-face up close combat that's not a sword (Hammer, Lance, Halberd, Spear, Gauntlets).
There's plenty of ranged items you can use that aren't guns (Bows, Crossbows, Flamethrowers, Throwing Javelins, Throwing Knives, Throwing Grenades).
Just because the icon shows a sword doesn't mean it have to be a sword. Shovels and Hammers aren't swords, but their icons is one.
I'd love to see a Twack hammer, Wrench wand, Slime slasher and Beast basher upgrade.

Yes to this post: swords are considered melee, guns projectile/ranged, bombs setup/area of effect in exchange for vulnerability.
@Quotefanboy if those get higher star versions, at most they'd go to 3* to prevent it from being horribly, horribly broken.
first of all ++ a lot to the books suggestion. fantastic idea. liked his idea.
Guns: shotguns and cannons/heavies. basically, shotgun would be an in close spread shot (almost like a blitz really) that required less aiming. the cannon/heavy would be a super strong attack (superer strong charge attack) with long reloads.
Swords: Spear. spear, trident whatever. extra range, defensive, long knock back. not quite as good DPS, perhaps could come with its own awesome shields!!!! (monster hunter) or combined with old shields. whatever. maybe the spear (And cannon from before) could be weapons with movement decreases when equipped and health bonuses. could steal from so many games. spear is stronger, pole dart is longer. spears are strongest weapons in this class, pole darts are weaker but are nearly a mini gun in function.
Bomb: an option that allows you to loft bombs. a tossing bomb, if you will. just like gremlins who do the same, it'd stun on hit, and then explode.

Others:
darts: same as guns really. blow darts. throw darts. work the same. visual diversity.
Pets: same as guns. they fly around, and look nifty, but really, they attack and hit with DPS just the same as a gun counterpart. just point on monster and click.
chainsaw/whatever: a sword that has an continuous hit function. stealing from god of war here.
Force/chakra/monk: basically a sword reskin that does whatever damage.
bare knuckle/claw: again, would work the same as swords. little less range, i suppose. but maybe stronger? or more combos?

To expand on you Spear idea, Spears would be massively long and reach forward up to 8 blocks and go through enemies. The downside is that the attacks are directional and not very wide!
why not make a 2nd line of all:
hammers/spears=swords
"pets"= guns
plants (idk, reaching here) = bombs (u plant them then they flower)
then do a combe of each
pole dart/arm and wands= gun + sword
lob-bomb/grenade and rocket launcher (operation crimson hammer)= gun + bomb
some sort of whip with exploding end= bomb + sword
---or the troika lines charge attack could plant a shiver or stagger storm, since current charge is useless.

Yes you're technically correct, but ingame all the things you listed would be classified as either a sword, a gun, or a bomb.
Also, a wand would be considered either a sword or a gun, depending on whether it's used to hit enemies in close range or fire energy bolts.
I like the idea of new weapons, but a new weapon class isn't going to happen…not only because we already have melee, ranged, and aoe weapons but also because OOO would have to design a whole new set of armor and trinkets focusing on that class.

In terms of weaponry there are several opportunities to use in terms of variety, but the primary issue is bringing new mechanics. Only a few users are competent in how to design a balanced mechanic without being ridiculously overpowered or completely useless; though almost always overpowered.
Guns can vary as they may, but keep balance in mind concerning weapons such as rocket launchers or sniper rifles.
Bombs absolutely require imagination to be a primary factor in mechanics and design, seeing as grenades are out of the question; imagine if Polaris bullets did not have to travel a distance before exploding and are released in a charge attack rather than waiting for the slow bullet path. Sticky bombs are questionable due to manual control over detonation potentially detonating the entire map and crashing the game. Unlike swords and guns, bombs are limited to existing overpowered explosives (hand grenades, nuclear warheads, etc.) or completely original content. There is no "it has the power to blast it all" in the same room with balance and community content.
No pets. At all. Get rid of them. Out the window and into the dumpster. The closest to pets we will ever get is the accessories, which are technically just accessories with miniature enemy models placed in a pocket.
Before creating a thread for a concept use the search function. Use it. Do not skip it to start the thread, search if it already exists first. No one wants derpzillion threads for the same thing every few days.

I am 100% against pets. I merely bring up the idea of a pet being a gun reskin weapon as it would be a logical way to do it, and it bypasses the balancing issues you so correctly bring up.
A Mechanical Ice bat/pet could really just be an cryotech in disguise. I am, again, against pets as anything other than accessories. BUt someday, i am sure, OOO will jump the shark and put them into the game. And when they do :) this would be a good way to do it, imo.
I would rather have new content with new mechanics and gameplay than having a reskinned weapon. No, pets will never exist with an active role; the most they will be is cosmetic for balancing reasons. No, my opinion does not influence whether I bash or support an idea; my criticism is based entirely on the content under my rubric and is not affected by personal biases or issues with the user or the concept. I have withheld using my rubric for a while because very few new threads with original content have appeared recently which have not already received it, are in progress, or are a continuing thread.
As long as we're being far-fetched and thinking up new things why not a new armor slot. This will have to be a glove, boot, over armor, etc. just one of those. What it will do is something between a trinket and a lockdown class.

Undead max, gremlin max, jelly max red
Construct max, beast max, fiend max red
Maybe some armor ones too ex

Shadow high, elem high red, beast high red
Etc etc
But that costs money. So it's either don't use these, or use them to get a high single bonus with big risks and burn through energy or pay directly for an ele pass which give OOO money to make the game better :)
