Temporary freeze, followed by graphics corruption

Okay, this is getting old. I will be playing the game, when suddenly it just locks up for about 10 seconds, leaving nothing but a black screen. If I ALT+TAB to bring up a Firefox window (I almost always have one open), it switches just fine. I can then ALT+TAB back to the game.

But once this happens, the graphics are corrupted, with what look like stray triangles everywhere. It's almost completely unplayable once I reach this point.

I've seen this problem happen during two situations. First is when loading into a new map - it will sometimes lock up while loading (but once it's loaded, I'm fine unless the 2nd condition occurs).

The second condition is that it will rarely do the same thing when a group of monsters spawn (while in the Clockworks, of course).

The machine is an older Dell, Celeron 2.5 Ghz, 2GB RAM, ATI Radeon 9250 graphics with 256 MB, Windows XP (fully patched).

I had the latest Java for XP installed before installing the game, as well as the latest video drivers.

This is getting extremely frustrating - I have yet to even reach T2, since I can't manage to make it through T1 without hitting this glitch at least once, and the graphics glitches makes it unplayable, so I wind up having to recall to Haven. Today was the worst - reached Depth 7, got halfway through, and it glitched, leaving me unable to finish.

(anyone know an emoticon for someone yanking out handfuls of hair?)

So this means you are using

So this means you are using the Catalyst 6.11? A Radeon 9250 is based as a cheaper to manufacture solution to the Radeon 8500, so just be aware that it is right on the nose of the minimum specified graphics adapter for this game.

Are you running this game fullscreen or windowed? You may be able to circumvent this error by keeping the windowed to there isn't as large of a screen switching action.

Correct - I'm running

Correct - I'm running Catalyst 6.11, which includes the latest driver available for the 9250. I'm aware of it being a very limited card, but it works for everything else without a flaw (I run Dungeons and Dragons Online from the same machine without a hitch, though I do keep the graphics turned down for maximum performance). I installed the Radeon card as an inexpensive upgrade for the truly horrible Intel onboard graphics that came with the machine.

Fullscreen vs. Windowed makes no difference. Same with enabling/disabling Compatibility Mode, either Windowed or Fullscreen. I keep the Graphics Quality set to Low for best performance (though once everything is loaded, it seems to perform just fine even on the highest setting).

Note that once the glitch has hit, I can actually change resolutions, and/or switch between windowed and fullscreen, and the corruption is still there.

A followup

I've been playing with various things, trying to stabilize the game on my machine. I have identified one "timing" issue that's the cause of the lockups when loading a level.

I noticed that whenever the level loading lockups happened, there was always a burst of disk activity. So I copied the the Spiral Knights folder ("C:\Program Files\Three Rings Design\Spiral Knights") into a ramdisk, and modified the shortcut to use the ramdisk as the working directory.

Net result - haven't seen a lockup of this type in 4 days (that's 4 runs through T1 to Moorcroft Manor, plus some stuff in T2 and assorted running around in Haven).

I am still seeing the "lockups when monsters spawn" problem (about once per T1 run, on average). I've noticed that it only happens when one of the spawned monsters appears for the first time during the run. After this lockup, there won't be a lot of screen corruption like the loading lockup, but the graphics for one of the monster types will be weird (for instance, on my last run, it ended up with Wolvers looking kinda like reverse skunks - mainly white, with some black, no other colors).

Of course, since it typically takes about 10 seconds for the graphics card to reset and for me to regain control, when I do get back to the game I'm generally looking at the revive window. On T1 I can live with this, since this is about the only situation where I die in T1 anymore. The energy cost of reviving in T2 makes this a somewhat harder to tolerate, as I die there often enough without any graphics weirdness to help.
