I was going to post this in the official thread. But this is full of math and numbers that I felt that it could de-rail the conversation in the other thread. So here goes:
While I appreciate the closeness the games under the new scoring system can get, matches are just too long.
Current system on the normal server
Imagine a 5 point game: 900 points goal
Team 1 held 3 points all game. (Yes, this is a overly simplified assumption that capturing is near instant and capture points never change hands.)
Team 2 held 2 points all game.
Team 1 would get 30 points every 10 seconds, or 900 points in 5 minutes.
Team 2 would get 20 points every 10 seconds, or 600 points in the 5 minutes it took to play.
If Team 1 decreased the # of points it had to ~2.5 points held all game on average (due to time it takes to capture, or points being left neutral for extended periods) they would win in 6 minutes.
Infact, to hit a 900 points at exactly the 9 minute mark, a team has to hold ~1.66 (or 10/6ths, to be exact) capture points on average for the whole game, while keeping the other team to under that. Out of 5 capture points, that's not a lot.
As you can see, because of such a low threshold, it's very difficult to have games that last to the full 9 minutes.
Current testing System:
For a 5-point game, I don't know how the scoring mechanic works exactly, as it has not been explained to us. And this is not something that's immediately obvious when you're playing a match. But I'd imagine it's 5 points for the first, 4 for the second, all the way to 1 point for the last.
This means the following:
Team 1 held 3 points all game
Team 2 held 2 points all game.
Team 1 would get 12 points every 10 seconds, or 648 points in 9 minutes.
Team 2 would get 9 points every 10 seconds, or 486 points in 9 minutes.
INFACT, if team one held 5 point all game, they would get 15 points every 10 seconds, or 810 points in 9 minutes.
Okay, what about 3-point games?
If a team held all 3 points, they would get 5, 3 & 1 point for all the captured points, or 9 points accrued every 10 seconds.
Over 9 minutes, they would get 486 points. They would not hit the finish point.
If a team held 2 points, they would get 8 points every 10 seconds and by the 9 minutes mark, they would get 432 points.
This means that all games, ALL GAMES, will finish in 9 minutes, because neither team will hit the 900 or 500 goal.
Solution:
If you want to make a new system that will let the other team catch up, I propose that the game have new goals.
300 points for 3-point games and and 500 points for 5-point games. (because 2 capture points don't really yield a whole heck of a lot extra points.) This will compensate for the loss of earned points for captures available to be won by each team.
Games would finish in ~6 minutes on average... in theory.
Update:
People have said that they have finished the games, so this means my calculations are off somewhere. Perhaps they made it so that points are accrued more often, like 8 seconds or 5 seconds (but I doubt 5 seconds).
Either way, as it stands, 900 and 500 points is still too high of a goal now that points are harder to earn.
