Hello this is Daarke hijacking my friend's account cuz I'm too lazy to log into mine. Don't worry he logged me in. =P Today's topic:

When I started as a newb, I was the Steam Christmas Promo newb. The one that had the snowball event to unlock coal. Anyways, I of course being a lover of free stuff, downloaded the game and proceeded to play. I was not one of the newbs running aorund asking "omg howz doo i trow snowballz?" I preferred to work alone and figure things out on my own. Asking where Lockdown was was my one and only question. Other then that I proceeded to the achievement. It wasn't long before I ralized I was actually having fun in this game, And since then I've come to stay for a while.

So what is your story of origins? I'd like to know the story you'd tell, back in your day...

Back In My day...

I was a Mac user and Minecraft player. Looking for an MMO for mac, I joined SK when it was in preview. However, I couldn't play till beta and even then I never signed in till full release.

But now I am 3* and pretty close to 4*.

back in my day I saw this as

back in my day I saw this as an advertisement for some site (thinking this was a game i will try and forget and uninstall), until I realized how fun it was and came onto steam (I played it before it came on steam), I soon found out it got a TF2 promo, then had to create an account for steam (soon solved for linking accounts). Then the rest was history (played since late April 2011)

Back in my day,

I was browsing the 'Tube, and saw these ads. At first, I thought it was like most of those other games(crappy).

Then the Launch Trailer....

And I downloaded it.

Ever since Late april/early may.

My Brother talked me into it

I hate MMO's, as i usually hate people in general. I've worked retail, and call center, and have a general disdain for the public. My brother eventually talked me into playing by telling me i could run with him, and him alone, and that would be fine. A couple of our IRL friends joined as well (steam launch) and then we were 4. For lulz, we created a guild, and once we ran out of mist, we sat around haven chatting. Ended up meeting some chill people, and our guild grew.

Flash forward 1 year, and our guild is now at 90 people...

......

I started out in the preview, at the time I was more of a lone wolf (Loner.... I was a sad, lonely, loner ;-;) so I never got involved really and left quite quickly.
Then I joined again when SK came out on steam, since I left SK I had been roaming MMO's to find one I liked and could anchor myself to, but alas! I never found one, then like I said, I joined SK again and stayed around for a while, I even joined a guild called, 'Phantoms End' I joined it when it was really small and grew with it until I left because of my GCSE finals.
Now I joined again back in December of 2011 and have been playing SK since then, I have been in three guilds, the current one being 'Rogue Knights' and I am having the most fun I have ever had in an MMO, and hey, I even decided to give up some of my £££ to OOO ^.^
And I also feel I have gained a lot of skill since joining again, I am WAY better than I was before, and...... I also like to make my knight look pretty, should be done with my Cheese costume this weekend..... Hopefully....

Weeell..I was looking up game

Weeell..I was looking up game websites on google (dont ask me why) and I found this one named Miniclip. They had Hundreds of games and each day I would play a different game except for some days where I would replay a game I had already played before. I did this for a couple o' months.

Then I found the multiplayer games section one day.

Spiralknights was one of them. I read the description of it and thought it would be interesting. I tried it out and got addicted. I like Daarke liked to figure things out on my own..the only time I ever asked for help was what kind of armor would be good for a swordsman.

I met another player who was a 3*. To me at the time, he was a wise and really good player. He became my friend after we did a few depths and talked a bit. Then he wanted to do a T2 run with me. And he realized I was still T1. He gave me 8k and I ended up buying a whole 2* loadout from the AH. I logged on the next day and I was excited to tell him about my new armor. He wasn't logged on. Then I tried the next day. Again, he wasn't on. Everyday I would see if he would log on but he wouldn't. Then one day I looked at the friends list. I found out he hadn't logged on for 2 months. I gave up. Before my friend had quit, he had invited me to his guild. It only had 6 members but I made friends with everyone in the guild.

I would talk to the still online members alot. Then, one day, they all just..vanished. All the members seemingly quitted at the same time. To never log on again. I still stayed in the guild though because I had no place else to go. There was only one member still alive and one day, he vanished. But I was still in the guild up until I had achieved full 3* stuff. Then I made my own guild. My guild got off to a good start. We had about 20 members total. Then it started to fail.

The guild was losing members and it could no longer sustain life. I promoted my most trusted and faithful members to Guild Masters, then quit the guild. I decided to join another guild. This guild would later burst out with tons of members that are very active and loyal. This guild was called Aegis Team. A friend I had met in Lockdown invited me and the guild was great. We had like 30 members who were very active and friendly. The guild consisted of mostly friends so it wasn't a very popular guild and it wasn't very well-known. Until I made a difference. I made the wiki page.

Once I made it, I was on a roll. I made a forum page too. And I got 13 new members into the guild and they were very nice and awesome. The guild was becoming a family. I became very popular and was promoted to veteran. The friend who had invited me was named Chrizmaniac.

Now, I'm a relatively new player. I started out in the beginning of January, 2012. I'm mostly 4* but I have 2 5* items and I'm working on a 3rd. I'm a Free-to-play player and I don't plan on paying anytime soon. I am still in the guild Aegis Team and we are flourishing slowly but surely. However, to this day, I have never met the mysterious good samaritan who invited me to my first guild and gave me cr to get my 2* loadout. This was all before the missions, so it was much harder to achieve T2 at the time. The good samaritan's name was Jkerouac. If he could see me now, I'm sure he would be amazed.

That student he once met on a run is now the sensei.

If I could meet Jkerouac one more time, I'd say Thank you.

TVTropes

I was reading pages on TVTropes, and noticed Spiral Knights banners from time to time. I didn't care much of it at first, but one day when one of the banner ads popped up again, I decided to read the Spiral Knights page on TVTropes. Then I decided to go check out the official website to read more about it. Then I thought I might as well try it. And I did, so here I am.

Then I found out that Ian of MacHall and 3PS is part of the dev team, and I thought "Wow, small world."

Back in my day...

I started playing Spiral Knights because I wanted a free hat in Team Fortress 2, back at the end of July last year (2011). A couple of my friends also played TF2 and were attracted by the prospect of a free hat, so they joined me in Spiral Knights. As we played we were reminded of the style of gameplay present in the 2D Legend of Zelda games, and we enjoyed it. By the time we got our free TF2 hats, we had gotten into Spiral Knights enough to keep playing it.

Back in my day, we had Power Surge Weekends and hourly CE giveaways.
Back in my day, we had a Royal Jelly that was legitimately difficult to beat without the right set of equipment and vials.
Back in my day, Lockdown, Howlitzers, Polyps, Shadow Lairs, Drones, and accessories didn't exist.
Back in my day, there were only two styles of Danger Rooms.
Back in my day, Alpha Wolvers, Zombies, and Retrodes were enemies to fear.
Back in my day, 6000cr was a price for 100ce that was high enough to complain about.

I remember always being behind in my equipment because I wanted to make a guild for all of us. I wanted to give us all a cool label to wear proudly under our names, so I had to save up what seemed like a lot of CE. About two weeks into our Spiral Knights adventure I created the guild <Bear Cavalry>, population: 4, highest equipment: 3*. We were pretty excited.

Another two weeks later a couple of my friends had reached Tier 3. I remember how crazy difficult it seemed - Lumbers would take out a shield in one smash, Wolvers teleported and were seemingly impossible to dodge, and Gun Puppies (there were no Polyps or Howlitzers) shot five bullets. I remember having to ask my friends to bring me into Tier 3 and they would gladly oblige because I had a Pulsar and knew how to use it. Times were good.

A month later, I finally decided I should upgrade to a full Tier 3 set. From there we just kept grinding Tier 3, kept trying to become skilled enough for a successful Vanaduke fight. A couple of us were getting bogged down in school work, so sometimes we just used our mist energy to craft goods to sell. Come January, one of my friends and I became the first members of <Bear Cavalry> to defeat Lord Vanaduke, with some help from two <Kage no Senshi> members. After that, Vanaduke became something like a hobby.

Two months of grinding Vanaduke and we were getting bored. None of us particularly enjoy Lockdown, and we had a lot of the costume items we wanted. By the time missions came out, one of my friends (the one I'd beaten Vanaduke with that first time) had already stopped playing altogether. Another friend went back to crafting every day. One by one, <Bear Cavalry> members reached the pinnacle of their satisfaction with Spiral Knights, and stopped playing.

April 27, 2012 -
I leave <Bear Cavalry>. Out of all my friends, I'm the only one that still plays, still waits for OOO to come out with cool updates. My Spiral Knights activity has been greatly reduced - I spend more time on the forums than I do playing the game. I burn crowns and energy on silly costumes and novelty names. I created the guild <Crusher of Dreams> as a joke for anyone on the Suggestions Forum who might understand it. Always behind in my equipment, I achieved Vanguard status only two days ago - before April 27, all of the Vanaduke runs I had done with my friends were done while I was still behind in Rank Missions because I would always use my daily mist energy to craft things or grind up crowns to get CE to craft things.

Now I am complete. I have basically everything I could ever seriously want in Spiral Knights, and I wait.

I joined after beta, so I don't really matter.

I spent quite a while on my own, and it took me a month to get to T2. The two friends that I was playing the game with both quit around then, but I stayed because I liked the game... I found a guild while farming the jelly king, but I didn't join it. I was kind of scared of this, and wasn't sure what to expect. I went on many adventures, and earned myself an antigua. I made this into a silversix, which I used at all times. When punch came out, I bought a UV off of him for it- it was, after all, my prized possession. This UV turned out to be ASI low, and I loved it. There were two types of danger rooms, the easy one and the hard one. The easy one consisted of a large area, and was not hard to fight in. The hard one consisted of thorns in the middle, and could wipe almost any party should they come unprepared. Once or twice, I even killed slimes in the hard danger room for my party- using only silversix, which dealt piercing at the time.

Eventually, I got into a T3 party, and we made it almost all the way down to vanaduke- or well, I did. I actually made it a lot further down than my T3 companions, using only my silversix. A week or two later, I met a knight called Penguina. She taught me how to loop arenas, and make a tremendous profit off of them. So I did that, as did everyone else, until a while later when OOO decided that we shouldn't and put in the awful party restrictions. But that came later. Anywho, I eventually had to join a guild to be able to beat vanaduke- all of my friends were T2 knights, and those that weren't wouldn't take me. I had wanted to join Penguina's guild at the time, but they were full, and all of the other guilds didn't really appeal to me- "Destroyers of Awesome" sounded a bit too... bleh for me.

So I eventually got into Knights of Eqestria, and I found I could make my gear 300% faster than before. I could do so much more, and it really made the game a lot better- I also found it hilarious that we used 'Everypony' casually.

And that was how it went when I started the game. Eventually, I left KoE and traveled about, for I still wanted to make my own guild.

Im a steam player

I joined this game right when steam launched free to play games and I signed up got my friends to play it and had a blast doing tier 1 with 4 friends when we finally beat snarby. I was loving this game at the time. Then royal jelly came up when we all had 3* gear and all was obliterated by him and so they started slowing down with the game because of the energy restraint. But i stayed strong and kept going to all 5* then my SK life was changed and i could officially enjoy this game for as long as i wanted because i crafted a Levi CTR VH and sold it for 20k ce and have enjoyed this game ever since

My [LONG AND/OR BORING] Story...

I first saw SK as an ad on Kongregate. At first I said, "pffft, just some stupid multiplayer flash game", and didn't give it another thought.

Then, when the Kongregate SK client came out, I became a little interested, and tried it out.
I was SO CONFUSED, I didn't understand a thing about the game. (Gate construction? What? UVs and damage types!?!? *Brain explodes*) and quit.
(It was right when the Halloween event started)

Then, just a month ago, my friend found it on Steam, and I installed it (I hated the Kongregate client, so I wanted to try the Steam one).
I was still really confused, so I tried reading the Wiki, and everything became clear. :D

My friend quit after playing once, but I continued to play, and after a week I bought an Elevator Pass, and Operation Crimson Hammer.

Now I am transitioning into 4*, and I'm already an officer in a potentially huge guild. (Created by Babyeightyone, leader of Intense Flame, and BRMC.)

Hope my story wasn't to boring or confusing :D

Started 1 day before

Started 1 day before Halloween event ended. Decided "hey these masks look cool" so I grinded depth 1 maps for a day looking for candies. By the time I finally got those authentic masks, I realized that the game itself is pretty fun so I continued to stick around.

My Story

I was watching a tobuscus video on youtube and some add pops up. I hate adds, so I always close it. But then that add, I was going to close it but I missed the button and ended up pressing the spiral knights add. I look at it 1nce and I think to my self. Meh. Looks to cartoonish.
Then a few days later my friend was talking to me on skype and said he saw a game called spiral knights. We were bored so I was like, oh what the hell. So then I install the game, create an account, and started playing with my friend. We were complete 1000% noobs. We bought 2 Hot Edges for 6k crowns. But it was so fun. We ended up playing everyday.
But then, my Friend had to move to his home country. (Well mine to). He had to move back to Sri Lanka. In there the computers are [crap], and you cant get [crap] for frames. Skype was the same.
So my friend, he ended up quieting.
Thats when I realized it wasn't that fun anymore without him. So I quit the game.
This all happened like 1 year ago. Before the Missions and stuff.

Then a few months ago, about January I think. I was watching tobuscus, and the same exact add poped up. I hadn't uninstalled SK yet so I decided I would try it again.
I go on and realize that I forgot my User and my Pass. Then I go and create a SK account. I log in and make a new character. I was hopeing they changed things. But nope. My excitement droped from 50% to 25%. I still kept playing and finished it and make it to rescue camp. Thats when i see a whole [crap] load of stuff. Mainly the Missions caught my excitement. So I play, and finally I get my self a cutter, Wolver Set and Skelly Shield. (Looks Badass).

One day I logged on to SK and I meet a new guy called Estrogen. He was awesome. We became quick friends and I bought him a Wolver Coat and Cutter and Skelly shield. He was my Red twin. (I was Sky Blue). We had so much fun.

But one day, I log in to see if he was online because he was always online when I was.
Then the next day came, and I look at his name and it says last loged in 1 day ago.
Then the next day. Last logged in 2 days ago.
5 days later. Last logged in 7 days ago.
After Like a month, Last logged in more than a month ago.

I realized I lost another friend in this game. But that didn't stop me this time.
Now I'm a full 4*, with a Skolver Coat, Skolver Cap, Hunting Blade and Vile Striker.

But I still miss both of those friends.

Steam release player, came

Steam release player, came for the free TF2 hat. Game captivated me.

I punched to T2 pretty fast, and meandered around T2 for a while, beating things to death with my trusty Kamarin. Eventually, I ground my way to a Sealed Sword, and operating with a sword like the Kamarin made the Sealed Sword feel so easy. It became even easier with a Faust upgrade. RJP became my sole stalking ground for a long while. Knights and Day also helped me out a ton with transitioning from RJP to FSC.
I moved up to FSC after the longest time, meandering around there with a crap armor set and subpar weaponry. To my fortune, I stumbled into Guild (RIP) really helped me out despite initial apathy ( I was still pretty naive), building my first set of viable armor and gear which I still use for FSC.
Broke off to help out a friend, which ultimately turned out to be a load of crap. I'm not naming any names here, but I left Guild for a short while to join a guild suspiciously similar to TF2. One thing led to another with conflict between my new guild and old, and I had to choose a side.

Looking back, rejoining Guild was one of the smarter things I'd done.

I stumbled upon Runs with Scissors, composed of some of the best PvE players money can buy. Seriously. We run UFSC for fun, and some multiple times a day.

Now I just chill in Scissors (the best PvE and socializing guild out there, bar none) and craft vanity weapons and armor, whatever interests me.

Now my SK time is double my TF2 time, and it's been a good run.

If Paweau is still here reading these forums- I honestly didn't know any better, I was new to the game and it was introduced to me as the "thing that everyone did for cash". Aside from that, I really fail to see the difference between that and running FSC over and over... in both cases, you're bringing gear that is "too strong" to a high payout level... and it saves you time. Its really hard to argue that grinding is "wrong" when there is a very deliberate option to receive wealth for no real work in game.

Aside from that, I needed it to craft more weapons and such. I didn't just do it to attain virtual numbers, and I had lots of friends that did it too... I didn't even see it as cheating lol.

Though I suppose I haven't really even looped in over a year or so now. Might as well let the past be the past.

In the beginning.

It all started when I purchased a game from Best Buy called "Breach". The game was published by Atomic.inc, the game installation gave me the option to download "Steam". 5 months or so later Atomic.inc went bankrupted, leaving us with a half programmed game (it was basically Counter Strike on a different engine).

So then I had plans to go back to playing UT 99, which I had been playing for the previous 8 years. but then .. I saw a game on the front page of steam called "Spiral Knights" .. I decided to check it out and .. WHAT THE BALLS?! it's FREE! (yeah .. call me a Jew ..)

So, I checked the system requirements and was overjoyed by the notion of "My computer can actually run it!" (512 mgbs of ram, pentium 4 processor, on-board graphics processor .. you get the picture).

Creating my character proved to be harder than I thought .. mainly because every single one of my aliases was "already in use" ..

And then I dove into my first dungeon/depth and fell in love with the hypnotic music, color, and art style of the game.

Viva Le Spiral Knights!.

I purged out a good 100$+ of Christmas cash on this game (SHAMEFUL, BUT WORTH IT) I've gotten quite a few 5* stuff, my oh-so-dear to me heavenly iron armor, and another character using unused stuff (Supernova, jelly line, irontech, rigadoon, etc.) I really love this game.

I even think that the Alpha squad will be the final boss(es) inside the core, judging by the module.

My nephew introduced me.

I was watching him play and though "maybe I should give this a go" and so a few days later I set up my knight on steam.

I was really new to PC gaming and this was the first MMO game I have played. So I read the wiki to learn more of how the game works. I never was the type to ask for help so I mostly soloed everything and was relieved I survived (I though I would die on my first session).

Now I have all 5 star equipment and I am in a guild.

Back in my days...

There was no mission
DA glitch
4-5k cr per 100 ce
No accessories
No Krogmo coin (LD/BN)
No SL
All bosses had to be done via Arcade so we used to farm Arena with a mule at the start, join it and go solo, clear it then rejoin, go solo, etc.
Most bosses arena were open before the fight started
AP was viable against Vana
JK had 2 phase

July 2011... :D

Back in my day...........

I was a Proto Player who used a hot edge against gremlins and pretty much everything actually and thought that Candlestick Keeps was the Slum of Haven have filled with death and i read the info about every weapon and def gear in the game on my phone so i was kinda a bookworm who saved a few friends from being scammed.
Oh and the CE prices were 6kcr.

Same as OP

I started out during the Steam winter sale. I too was looking to throw some snowballs and get coal... Spiral Knights turned out to be so much fun, and so charming and captivating, that I kept playing.

Now I have 532 hours of play time to show for looking for some coal. No regrets, this game is really fun.

I looked for a while to figure out where to throw snowballs, but had to ask around a bit to find out where I could throw snowballs for coal. Lockdown didn't/doesn't do much for me, so I don't play it much.

Why complain about reviving a dead thread? It's better than making a new one, in my opinion. Thank you Slim-Shady-Two for reviving this thread!!

I joined April 14 2011 9:30 Pm, give or take a few minuets.

Back in My day a hole hell lot was different, CE was 3k to 4k a pop and yes their where still complaints.
Lifts to T2 cost 200Crn if T1 had not been cleared, 500 to T3 if T2 hadn't.
the first promo i heard of was Rose Regela, Not counting power surge every weekend.
We only had two Bosses, and they where dang hard,
Jelly could only be killed with viles, Wail Vanaduke was done with DA, AP, and Levi And a hole lota prayin
Snarblax or twins hadn't even been thought of, And enemy's taken lightly would rip ya a new one
We still hadn't heard of a toothpick , A blitz Er Shiver or all those shinny accessorys,
And Shadow Lair was still just the developers dream.
Mats was where the Crns where at And the Bizarre was the spot the be.
The player base was small but had lots of respect and kindness
The Game was full of bugs and the GM were Where their to help
And Kennys-Knight was still Green, If you know what I mean
But most importantly is the thing I miss most, We still had hope that something great was right around the corner
And the patience to wait for it.

@Owlert Yes, Yes we do. But with the Mission system, When do you think someone will be gripeing bout paying 500 Crn to do a t3 run next? It was much more common in My day.

git offa my lawn you whippersnappers

Back in my day we actually bothered to clear the gates from start to finish, especially for Vanaduke. Retrodes were something to be feared with their nigh-instantaneous claw attack as soon as they spawned. If you saw Alpha Wolvers prepping up for an attack, you ran like hell. I had a Spur that I was going to upgrade all the way into Winmillion. Basil was an even worse troll than he is now. People were still griping about CE prices and asking for pets, so I guess some things never change.

Ironically this all started because a person on Kongregate suggested I do a 'Let's Play' video of the game with him in October 2011. The video never got made, and I haven't talked to him for a long time due to a moment of excessive... awkwardness... in which he started trying to RP sex with me in chat.
This being whilst I was AFK and my mother had decided to borrow my laptop briefly.

Ah well, while it's here

Back in my day...
It was arcade, arcade, arcade up until my mist was out. I'd always join a random party. It was an excellent way of seeing new people, skip a level or two (I understood how valuable mist was almost immdiately), I get to observe the different kinds of weapons, strategies, etc though I never friended anyone until I started doing JK runs since JK was uber hard (at the time). I added anyone who was at least decent in JK runs making around making around 5-6k for the full T2 run (including D14 arena) and if I was using pure ce, I'd make 20ce/1.2kcr profit per run. I always finished T1 before doing any "good" Jelly gates (the ones with D14 arena) so that I never lose out on the 200cr T2 transport fee. I'd sometimes wait up to half an hour for the arena.

T3 days were filled with with mostly JK runs until I almost always had a consistent Vana party. Back then in FSC, the sprites in D25 didn't have a minimap icon so it was easy to forget a room or two. Also, there was a glitch there where you can finish the floor with only one sprite but we always did all the rooms before doing that. When dropping statues on pressure pads, they didn't have the auto-lock on causing the statues to make sloppy landings on the button. Another glitch was when you were getting a statue in the part just before the last room in the floor just before Vana himself, you could just drop it on the very right side and it would teleport beside the pressure pad (good times).

Missions came out. I remember when the initial ce rev cost was 2ce for all the missions. 2ce revs in Vana was fun.

Then there was that "invincibility frame" glitch in LD. Everyone died in seconds but the Striker line was super fun to use, DarkRet did more damage, guns became much much more useful and Rocket Hammers and Blitz Needles trolled galore. I'd sometimes die in a fraction of a second and I'd be usually be dead some time after but I really like seeing all my weapons do damage the way they were supposed to.

Soup

When I was a boy, we didn't have any of these spiral knights. We played with rocks and sticks and made bicycles out of old barrels. Sometimes I would walk to the store and buy 14 loaves of bread for a penny. (as if any of those things ever happened)
I joined back when CE was cheap and loot sold for a good deal and there was no evil Punch and having an unbound 4* item made you special and and and Jim-Dale

Kozma was selling only recipes of cobalt lines.
There was nothing called missions, you have to go to the arcade for earning money.
P.S I started playing this game some days before the missions update.
