Erm. Weeeeeell,...
Pick a gate in the arcade, go down, kill some furry animal thingies. Try to get in a party if possible.
Learn how to shield bump, ie. run into something and hit the shield button. Don't try it on Trojans, though.
Don't CE revive if someone's heading your way. Also, don't extensively revive others unless you want only to level stuff up, and are really good at not getting hit.
Learn how to dodge - trust me, it helps in Tier 2 and up.
Learn weakness/resistance tables so you know what gear to pack (or not) every level.

For gear i would say to get from the auction house after doing a bunch of arcade missions. The hall of heroes has most of the best recipes in the game. Untill you're sure about what class of weaponry you want, the wolver and cobalt sets are great for starters.

If you play through the missions, you will get some gear. It's crap, for sure, but at early levels, it'll do you just fine. Then you'll have some of the game concepts down and have a better idea of what gear you want to chase after. Gear you get by buying the recipes, aquiring the materials, and then paying crowns and energy at an alchemy station to make your item. Again, if you play through the missions, it will all be explained. And it is explained in a fairly orderly manner, which might be easier than us brain-dumping on you everything we know about it!
