There is so much complaining about rising CE prices, how exactly does this happen?

Economics!

The SK market works almost the same way a real market does.

CE price rises when either people are buying less CE or gaining more crowns. For example, a while ago FSC would give about 12,000 crowns per run. When people made more crowns, then they bought more CE. After a while, people were willing to pay more and more crowns to get the same amount of CE, due to an excess of crowns and a strong demand for CE. The CE price almost hit 8k if I remember correctly, before a patch nerfed the crown drop rate in FSC.

Conversely, the CE price lowers when there are more people selling CE. The biggest example of this that I can think of would be during Christmas. During the X-mas sale, the $15(?) Explorer Pack was only $3. Suddenly, people could spend very little $$$ and gain tons of CE. When people had an excess of CE, they sold it, often. They wanted crowns more than CE and were willing to accept less crowns as long as they got them as quickly as possible. I think at the peak of the season, the CE price was scraping 5.7k.

CE price also rises due to

CE price also rises due to "Me first!" mentality of buyers and shill bidding from sellers.

More economics...

Basically, if it's in high demand, the prices will go up due to a) there being less of it up for sale, and if there is less, each unit is worth slightly more and b) if it is in high demand, people will put the prices up in order to get MOAR MONEYZ.

Hope that helped!

@Travelliath Yep, sounds right from here. Still, once there was a crash sometime at around 4k due to the mirrored lockbox event.
Sadness :( Wasn't here in time for the Christmas event.
