I have never played World Of Warcraft before, so I am going to try the free trial. I have heard a lot of negative stuff about it and I wanted to see for myself. I doubt I will like it, though. It doesnt seem like my kind of thing

10:32pm: Nothing so far, It is crashing and whatnot.

2:27pm (Next Day): Still crashing, Haven't even made a character yet

1:35am: Finally made a character, the game is kinda boring. What am I supposed to do besides kill Mana Eels?

What's that Mr. Mage? You run out of mana? You can't keep something frozen indefinitely?

@Garlicveggie:

Crashing? I've played WoW for months and it maybe crashed a single time on me...and that was because my internet cut out and locked the game up.

If it's crashing, you're missing the graphical requirements and/or hardware capabilities of playing such a game. Either that, or you've got a different problem which is non-hardware related...which could be any number of things.

By saying "Kill Mana Eels", I'm assuming you started as a Blood Elf.

Let me give you some advice: They make you stop at 20 in the Free Trial because those are the most boring levels of the game. Until 30-ish, the game isn't very fun to play, honestly.

Once you pass 30, and actually have more than one or two moves (Some sort of rotation rather than using the same attack every 10 seconds), it becomes much more fun. You get Dual-Spec abilities which can be useful, you run out of mana a lot less in Dungeon Finder, and your gear makes sense.

I mean, even if you wear Plate/Mail, as a paladin you end up using cloth just because you need the Intellect/Spirit stats until level 30. Once you get to 30, some gear drops that you can actually use to its fullest, like Plate gear that gives intellect and spirit.

As you level, the game gets better and more interesting. If you know which raids are from the older expansion versions, you can have Lv. 85s help you through them when you're at the appropriate level (I.E. Burning Crusade 10-man raids with you at level 70 and two 85s). If you don't, you just do storyline quests and Dungeon Finder up to 85. You can also do Battlegrounds, which is PvP.

Contrary to many MMOs I've played, once you hit the level cap, you get much more stuff to do, rather than having nothing to do. At 85, your gear level is around 300~320. If you're an endgame player (25-man Dragon Soul Heroic Raids), your item level is around 400. That's a whole 100 item levels after already hitting 85.

The storyline quests are also sometimes really fun, at least the first time you do them. Take the Uldum storyline, it has all kinds of gimmicks taken from movies or real-life people, like Harrison Jones or Schnottz.

There's lots of other things you can do as well, but I'm not going to describe the whole game to you...lol. Suffice to say that I didn't know how much content the game had until at least a month after I became level 85 (and I still haven't played it all).

As an addendum, the game is much more fun if you have a friend or a Guild where you have some real-life friends, and can all dungeon together or raid together with vent etc. It makes it much more engaging and fun, rather than putting together PUGs all day; which, on top of being terribly uncoordinated by nature, are less fun to play with.

My opinion of WoW.

In my short 2 mounths of wow I got played a Night eld Druid to lvl 60... I think. I quit because of a couple of things.

1. Eats a lot of free time unlike spiral knights.

2. All you do is press hot keys.

3. If you don't use heirlooms in pvp there is very little chance the you will be good. If the other team has a bunch of heirloomers then your team looses if you don't have the same amount with as much "skill" as them.

4. People in dungeons become whinny and want to kick someone for one mistake.

Those are just some of the reasons I quit (didn't feel like listing the others)but I did have fun as well. I liked the teamwork aspect.

@Frocus:

1. Mm I don't see how it eats any more free time than Spiral Knights. Perhaps you just feel more motivated to play it because you're committed to paying a monthly fee? If you've got an Elevator Pass on Spiral Knights, you're free to play it as much as you like, just like WoW.

You do have a point here though, only after 85. Once you get into raiding, you have to have longer sessions, unlike Spiral Knights. You could spend the same amount of time on each game, but you'll likely have more breaks in a Vanaduke run than a Dragon Soul raid. It can be difficult to set aside an hour or two for a Dragon Soul raid. For achievement raids, it can take about 6 hours, which the raid leader usually splits into multiple days, assigning a time for the following day (Mostly on weekends, when most people are available).

2. As opposed to spiral knights, where you press even less hot keys? Welcome to the world of gaming, lol.

3. Heirlooms are really cheap, I agree. I never use them because they make low level dungeons very easy and low level PvP unbalanced. I never PvP until 85 for this reason, because heirlooms are useless after 80 (Or, at best, a ton less useful).

4. I like to call them "Srs wow plyrs". With the dungeon-finder being cross-server now, dungeons are no longer just you and your pals. People grind them often, and since you'll never see that person again (Since he's on a different server), people are more apt to being rude or inconsiderate. LFR (Looking for Raid) is the worst example of this.

Like I said in my first post, I highly recommend getting some friends or a guild to raid and dungeon with. Or, at least get people from your own server to dungeon/raid with you. It'll take longer, and you might not want to do it at lower levels when you're grinding through them, but your gaming experience will be a thousand times better without dramatic over-serious people who don't even have fun playing the game. People who know they'll run into you again are less likely to call you out as a noob or something, especially if you're doing better than they are.

And I wouldn't normally point fingers, but since this isn't a WoW forum...I find Mal'Ganis server players to be the least considerate. Honestly I don't play on that server, but I see a lot of players from Mal'Ganis in dungeon-finder/LFR, and they almost always seem to be really spammy, whiny, and just not fun to play with. I can't say for sure (Haven't actually raised a toon on the server), but in my experience at least, it's not a great server to be on.

So yup, like most MMOs, the best part is that you're playing with your friends. It's a fresh experience though, if you haven't already played any knock-off games of WoW.

voice of reason possibly?

OK Garlic, if you want to play wow, here is the best advice i have for you:

WoW is an RPG, which means role-playing game, so...do just that. For now forget everything Sev has said about heirlooms and other stuff, because thats more important later in the game (no offense Sev, ik ur info is important). For now, all YOU, the wow player, has to do, is BE your character. Dont think about the numbers and stats as much, just imagine you are the character.

If you're the kind of guy like me, and likes summoning demons from oblivion and causing people to writhe in pain with curses and banes, not to mention causing people to spontaneously light on fire (i'm a twisted person, i know), then be a warlock.

If you picture yourself as the shining guardian of hope. Charging into battle with righteous light emanating from your body. Smiting foes with the Holy Light of Azeroth, and making the undead run away in fear, then be a paladin.

If you think you're more of the devious type (no warlocks are not devious, they are evil, there is a difference :P), choosing to sneak behind enemies cloaked in shadows, and plunging blades doused in toxic poisons into the bodies of your targets, then sneaking out without anyone knowing, then the Rogue is the right class for you.

Or, maybe, later in the game, when you've reached a higher level, you want to be a soldier of death. Once you get to level 55 you can opt to make a death knight. A soldier of the unholy arts, summoning the dead to do his bidding and empowering his blades with dark magics (basically anti-paladin).

How about commanding the beasts of azeroth? You could be a hunter, who favors pets such as wolves, cats, serpents, and even spirit beasts (ghost wolves and such) to travel with him. They are always fun.

See? WoW isnt always the stereotypical numbers and commands that the game is dubbed with. I like to focus on the story aspect of the game, and the actual fun that is involved. I hope this helped you, and also, thanks, i like writing, and this post was actually very fun to write.

Good luck with your travels in Azeroth! May your blades never dull! :P
