CE, gameplay wise, is from players spending real money on this game. The entire CE market is suported by several dozen people putting in $50 every now and then into the game, and then selling the CE for crowns.

Ok, so please don't rant at me...
1. Have you seen how many threads there are in New Recruits asking this very same question? Please, just use the search bar.
2. CE is basically just OOO giving an online currency to anyone who pays them money. When money is paid, they spontaneously produce another X units of CE.

You can trade in-game crowns for CE. Click the lower right corner of game screen to be taken to a menu with tabs. Click the "trade" tab and you have the option of getting CE for crowns or vice versa.

CE is energy that the spiral knights accumulate for trading. unlike mist, it doesnt come from the core and is not loose in cradle's atmosphere, but instead found in the clockworks to be mined in a crystalline form. it therefore can be stored in amounts higher than one hundred.
